    EFFECT OF RATOONING ON DIFFERENT VARITIES OF BORO RICE UNDER VARYING CUTTING HEIGHT

    An experiment was carried out at the Agronomy Field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University. Dhaka during the period from November 2009 to July 2010 to study the effect of variety and cutting height of main crop plants on the performance of ratoon horo rice. Four cutting heights were (0.15.30 and 45 cm) and four varieties ( BRRI hybrid dhan-l. BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan36 and BRRI dhan45) were tested. Variety had significant effect on almost all the crop characters like plant height, total number of tillers per hill, number of effective tillers per hill, number of non-effective tillers per hill, panicle length, days to panicle initiation, number of grains per panicle, number of sterile spikelets per panicle, total number of spikelets per panicle, days to maturity. 1000-grain weight. grain weight per hill, grain yield, straw yield. and harvest index in the ratoon crop. BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan36 showed greater ratoon yields (1.8 t/ha and 1.79t/ha). Likewise cutting height also had significant effect on plant height, number of effective tillers per hill, number of non-effective tillers per hill, panicle length. days to panicle initiation, number of sterile spikelets per panicle, total number of spikelets per panicle. 1000-grain weight, grain yield, straw yield and harvest index. Cutting height Of 30 to 45 cm showed higher yields (1.7-1.69 tlha).Grain yield was highest at 30 cm cutting height of BRRI dhan28 and the second highest grain yield were at 30 cm cutting height of BRRI dhan36. All of the crop characters in the ratoon crop were significantly affected by the interaction of variety and cutting height of main crop.

    EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT LEVEL OF GROWTH PROMOTER (PANAMIN) ON THE PERFORMANCE OF BROILERS

    The feeding trial was carried out by using 120, straight-run 7 day-old Ross broiler (308)chicks into four groups (3 replicates x 10 chicks), without Growth promoter (panamin) on Treatment-0, or with Growth Promoter (Panamin). Treatment-1 (1ml), Treatment-2 (2ml) and Treatment-3 (3ml) per litre of water respectively between 8-28 days of age at one day interval, to evaluate the performance of broilers in different treatments. The final body weights of birds improved significantly (P<0.01) in Treatment-3 (3 ml panamin/litre of water) compared to other treatment groups. Feed consumption and feed conversion ratio’s differed significantly (P<0.01) at the age of 28th days. Feed conversion ratios were 1.70, l.68, 1.64 and 1.59 in T0, T1, T2 and T3 respectively. Finally it may be concluded from the study that addition of growth promoter (panamin) may be beneficial. The most economic and efficient level of growth promoter was found to be 3.0 ml of Panamin/litre of water.

    FARMERS' PERCEPTION TOWARDS HARMFUL EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON AGRICULTURE

    The objectives of this study were to determine the farmers’ perception towards harmful effects of climate change on agriculture and to describe the selected characteristics of the farmers and to identify the factors that influence farmers' perception towards harmful effects of climate change on agriculture. The study was conducted in four villages of Maizbari and Natuarpara union under Kazipur upazila of Sirajgonj district. Data were collected by using interview schedule from the randomly selected 113 respondents during 1 January to 30 January, 2018. Descriptive statistics, multiple regressions (B) were used for analysis. Majority (70.8 percent) of the respondents had moderately agreed perception while 18.8 percent and 10.6 percent of them had respectively lower agreed perception and highly agreed perception towards harmful effects of climate change on agriculture. Among nine selected characteristics, organizational participation, extension media contact and knowledge on climate change had significant positive contribution to the farmers’ perception towards harmful effects of climate change on agriculture. The remaining characteristics of the farmers, namely age, education, farm size, annual family income, training received and cosmopoliteness did not show any significant contribution with their perception. The findings of the study indicated that farmers’ perception towards harmful effects of climate change on agriculture has not satisfactory. Still there is a scope to improve farmers’ perception through more involving with organizational participation, extension media contact and increasing knowledge

    INSECT PEST DIVERSITY AND RISK ASSESSMENT FOR POTATO IN BANGLADESH

    The study was conducted in the 20 upazila of 10 selected major potato growing districts of Bangladesh during the period from December 2014 to February 2015 to find out the present status and diversity of insect pests of potato, their risks and management options. The data were collected through interview of 500 potato farmers considering 25 potato farmers from each upazila and 60 field level officers of DAE including one UAO, one AEO and one SAAO. The data were analyzed using computer program SPSS 17.0 version. The result shows that BARI Alu-7 (Diamont) variety and BARI Alu-8 (Cardinal) were the most popular potato varieties cultivated by the farmers. The major sources of potato seeds were the self produced seeds, BADC seeds, seed traders/dealers and neighboring farmers. Mostly (89.20%) potato farmers faced problems with lower market price of the produced potato. Other major problems faced during potato cultivation were diseases, insect pest and weed attack. The BARI Alu-7 and BARI Alu-8 were the most susceptible potato varieties to insect pests and diseases, whereas the Lal-pakhri was the least susceptible to pests. Mostly (98.50%) the potato was infested in the field by cutworm, aphid, potato tuber worm, leaf miner, mole cricket, field cricket and leaf hoppers. Among these insect pests, cutworm and aphid were identified as major pests in the field and caused damage with high and moderate infestation intensity, respectively. Others were identified as minor insect pests of potato caused damage with low infestation intensity. The investigation revealed that 73.50% tubers were attacked by the worm in storage condition and it can be the major storage pest of potato in Bangladesh . Currently cutworm and aphid were more damaging pest of potato in field condition, and potato tuber worm was more damaging insect pest in storage.To control the insect pests in the potato fields, 93.40% farmers used to apply insecticides. Additionaly, other control options like application of flood irrigation, hand picking and poison baits in the furrows were observed specially for controlling cutworm. So for, 95%potato farmers got assistance and advices from pesticide dealers while controlling these pests. Moreover, DAE, NGO’s and neighboring experienced and skill farmers were helped the farmers.

    Role of chitosan powder on the production of quality seedlings of BRRI dhan29 and its effect on yield

    Role of chitosan powder on the production of quality Boro rice seedlings and its effect on yield was examined. The experiment was conducted at the farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka. There were six treatments and three replications in the experiment. The treatments were as follows: T 1 = 100 g powder/m 2 , T 2 = 200 g powder/m , T 3 = 300 g powder/m 2 , T 4 = 400 g powder/m 2 , T 5 = 500 g powder/m 2 , T 6 = 0 g powder/m . A significant variation was observed in the seedlings height, biomass production and chemical properties of the seedbed soils due to the application of chitosan powder in the seedbed. The maximum seedlings height, fresh weight, oven dry weight were observed in the treatment T and the minimum seedlings height, fresh weight and oven dry weight were recorded in the treatment T , control. Whereas, the maximum level of organic carbon, organic matter and soil pH were recorded in the treatment T 6 and the minimum level of organic carbon, organic matter and soil pH were recorded in the treatment T 5 , control. Chitosan powder increased the level of organic matter in a dose dependent manner. Quality of the rice seedlings were improved due to the application of the chitosan powder in a dose dependent manner and the treatment T 4 (400 g powder/m 2 6 ) was the more effective than other treatments. All the treatments were produced good rice seedlings having more chlorophyll level than control treatments. Application of chitosan increased plant height, effective tillers hill , number of panicle/m 2 , panicle length, grain yield and straw yield over control. Most of the morphological, yield attributes and grain yield were increased with increasing the dose of chitosan in the seedbed. Maximum grain yield was observed in T 4 -1 treatment followed by T , T 5 , T 2 ,T 1 and T (control). Results indicate that primary tiller production become earlier, effective tiller become higher, flowering and maturity time become earlier resulting higher yield. These results might be due some growth promoting hormones (especially GA3, Auxin etc.), soil alkalization nature and other some macro-micro nutritional supplementation which might be induced some early flowering genes (ELF1, ELF2, ELF3). 6 2 2 4 3

    SURVEY ON THE PRESENT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES OF GUAVA INSECT PESTS IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF PIROJPUR DISTRICT

    Thirty guava growers from Nesarabad upazila were purposively selected for conducting the survey on the present management practices adapted by growers against guava insect pests in major guava growing area of Bangladesh. Total of 30 guava growers were interviewed and made a clear observation during the period from 23 November 2014 to 14 May 2015. A well structured interview schedule was developed based on objectives of the study for collecting information. Survey findings revealed that white fly, fruit fly maggot, aphid and mealybug were the major insect pests in guava. In case of management practices, the highest plant infestation was recorded from GP1 (63.33%), whereas the lowest plant infestation was observed from GP5 and GP4 (3.33%). The highest fruit infestation was recorded from GP1 (56.67%), whereas the lowest fruit infestation was observed from GP5 (3.33%). The highest benefit cost ratio (BCR) was recorded from GP5 (3.08), while the lowest BCR was observed from GP1 (2.37). For using different combination of insecticide, the highest plant infestation was recorded from IC1 (50.00%), whereas the lowest from IC5 (3.33%). The highest fruit infestation was recorded from IC1 (43.33%), whereas the lowest fruit infestation was observed from IC5 (3.33%). The highest BCR was recorded from IC5 (3.42), whereas the lowest BCR was observed from IC1 (2.50). Application of combined/integrated control tactics/measures were more effective for guava cultivation compared to single control measure.
