    EFFECT OF NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT AND FRUIT POSITION ON GROWTH AND SEED YIELD OF OKRA

    The experiment was conducted at the Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from April to September 2017 to study in effect of nutrient management and fruit position on growth and seed yield of okra. The experiment consisted of four different levels of NPKS as: F = N 60 P 20 K 40 S 10, F 2 = N 80 P 30 K 60 S 15, and F 3 = N 120 P 40 K 80 S 20 0 , and Seed from fruits of different node position viz. P 1 =from fruits borne on 1-3 nodes, P = from fruits borne on 4-8 nodes, P = from all fruits. The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Results showed that a significant variation among the treatments in respect majority of the observed parameters. Different nutrient level and seed from different fruit position 3 had significant influence on growth, seed yield and quality components of okra. The maximum number of pods per plant (29.79), pod length (16.54 cm), individual pod weight (16.28g), number of seeds per pod (46.81) thousand seed weight (62.15g) was obtained from F 3 P treatment combination (N 120 P 40 K 80 S 20 1 Kg/ha with seeds from fruits borne on 1-3 nodes) whereas the minimum number of pods per plant (23.36), pod length (13.2 cm), individual pod weight (11.23g), number of seeds per pod (37.95) thousand seed weight (42.65g) was obtained from F 0 P treatment combination (control with from all fruits) It is apparent that F 3 P 1 3 treatment combination gave the best performance for the growth and seed yield of okra. = Control, F 2 1

    An experiment was conducted at the Research farm of Crop Physiology and Ecology Department, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during 14 August to 7 December, 2008 to study the variation in phenology, degree days and yield performance of five fine rice cultivars viz., Rajshahi swarna, Silkumul, Kataribhog, Lal pajam and Sanla as well as soil properties under organic and inorganic cultural conditions. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications.

    STATUS, DIVERSITY AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF HOMESTEAD AGROFORESTY IN DINAJPUR, BANGLADESH

    Homestead agroforestry is a traditional agroforestry system practiced all over the country. An explanatory survey was conducted to investigate the present status, species diversity and socio-economic effect of homestead agroforestry in the Northern region of Bangladesh. To conduct the study ten unions of Biral upazila under Dinajpur district were surveyed during June to July, 2016. The data of the experiment were collected on some qualitative and quantatitive characters. The result of the study reveals that, Eucalyptus camadulensis is most diverse species among the different species planted by the respondents in their homestead followed by Mangifera indica and Swietenia mahogoni. The Relative density (RD), abundance (A) and relative abundance (RA) were highest in Eucalyptus (37.38, 34.71, 33.82) while lowest in Tamarindus indica (0.15, 1, 0.97). Similarly, Important Value Index (IVI) was highest in Eucalyptus camadulensis (74.64 percent) followed by 49.63 percent in Mangifera indica and lowest in Tamarindus indica (1.61%). However, Mangifera indica is the most frequent species (90). Among the livestock and poultry, pigeon (7.87) was the most domesticated poultry followed by hen (6.05) and duck (5.96) and lowest was in goat (2.29). The Shannon Index value was 2.523 and evenness 0.645. Furthermore, homestead agroforestry improves socieoeconomic condition of the respondents by ensuring income, meting daily basic needs of the family and provides ecological stability. The homestead agroforestry management practices were mostly done by family members. However, the respodents advised that emphasis should be given by the authority in the availability of good quality seeds/seedlings for plantation in the homesteads and applying more scientific knowledge for management.

    TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY OF BORO RICE CULTIVATION IN JAMALPUR DISTRICT

    Bangladesh is the country with distinct agricultural setting. It is the most populous country in the world with 163.7 million populations and population density of 1103 person per square kilometer. Boro rice production plays an important role in achieving food security of Bangladesh. Due to high population growth rate, food security has become a burning issue in Bangladesh economy where 21.8 percent people lived under poverty level. Efficiency of Boro rice producer is an important factor because of rice is the staple food in Bangladesh. Annual consumption of rice is 134.02 kg. per capita in Bangladesh. This study attempted to examine the profitability and technical efficiency level of Boro rice farmers and inefficiency factors which affects production. One hundred and twenty (120) Boro rice farmers has been selected through simple random sampling procedure from three villages under Jamalpur Sadar upazila of Jamalpur district which comprising of 40 farmers from each village. The study has employed Cobb-Douglas stochastic frontier production function to estimate technical efficiency for Boro rice cultivation. Result reveals that per hectare total cost of production was Tk. 114931.68 per hectare. Gross returns was Tk. 120600.43 and net returns was Tk. 5668.75. Per hectare yields of Boro rice was found 6940 kg. Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) was found 1.05 which implied that one taka investment in Boro rice production generated Tk. 1.05. The mean technical efficiency of the Boro rice was 87 percent. Human labour, seeds, fertilizers, insecticides, irrigation and power tiller (for land preparation) were important factors for production of Boro rice. Education, experience, farm size and training has expected negative sign which can reduce the farmer’s inefficiency in the study area. The study also identified some problems faced by the Boro rice growers and suggested some recommendations to improve the present Boro rice production.
