Item A STUDY ON FACTORS AFFECTING THE ADOPTION OF CLIMATE SMART AGRICULTURE PRACTICES IN NORTHERN PARTS OF BANGLADESH(DEPARTMENT OF MANAGEMENT AND FINANCE, 2020) ISLAM, MD. MONIRULClimate-smart agriculture (CSA) is an effective approach of transforming and reorienting agricultural development under in the context of climate change. The objectives of the study were to determine and describe some characteristics of the farmers and to determine the determinants of the adoption of CSA. Data was collected from 100 farmers of 3 villages f r om each one union of two district. These Unions namely Kakonhat and Kakfoo in Godagari and Bagatipara Upazilla under Rajshahi and Natore district were purposefully selected due to easy communication as well as easy contact with the farmers. Data were collected during the period from September 13 to September 20, 2020. Descriptive statistics, multinominal regressions (MNL) were employed for analysis. 63.8% farmers partially adopted the CSA, while 23.1 and 13.1 percent of them did not a d o p t e d and fully adopted the CSA, respectively. Education, annual income, training received, and family size were key determinant of the adoption of CSA. To increase the adoption of CSA, the policy makers could invest on improving facility of education received (e.g. farmers field schools) and enhancing farmers’ to receive more income by producing more drought resistant rice variety, enhancing farmers training receive facility from different training organization and lastly motivating them for using IPM to reduce their production cost and improve their productivity.Item EFFECT OF COMBINED APPLICATION OF BIOFERTILIZER AND NITROGENOUS FERTILIZER ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF WHEAT (Triticum aestivum L.)(DEPARTMENT OF SOIL SCIENCE, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, SHER-E-BANGLA NAGAR, DHAKA, 2021-06) ISLAM, MD. MONIRULThe experiment was conducted at the research field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during the period from November, 2019 to March, 2020 to study the effect of combined application of biofertilizer and nitrogenous fertilizer on growth and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). The experiment comprised of single factor comprising eight treatments. Azotobacter was incorporated with wheat seed as per treatment. This experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three (3) replications. The results revealed that treatment T₅ [Azotobacter (4 kg ha⁻¹) + 90 kg N ha⁻¹] exhibited its superiority compared to that of other biofertilizer and nitrogenous fertilizer treatments in terms of grain yield. Treatment T₅ out-yielded over T₈ (No Azotobacter + 120 kg N ha⁻¹) by 5.26%, T₃ [Azotobacter (6 kg ha⁻¹) + 60 kg N ha⁻¹] by 7.57%, T₆ [No Azotobacter + 90 kg N ha⁻¹] by 8.64%, T₇ [Azotobacter + 120 kg N ha⁻¹] by 13.69%, T₄ [No Azotobacter + 60 kg N ha⁻¹] by 15.18% and T₂ [Azotobacter (8 kg ha⁻¹)] by 25.00% higher grain yield. Treatment T₅ also showed the tallest plant at 90 DAS (107.53 cm), the highest number of spikelets per spike (19.47), the highest number of grains per spike (75.93), the longest spike (15.70 cm), the maximum weight of 1000grain (48.90 g), the highest straw yield (7.68 t ha⁻¹) and the maximum harvest index (38.76%) than other treatments in this experiment. On the other hand, the treatment T₁ [Control (No Azotobacter, No N as urea)] returned with 69.88% lower yield than treatment T₅ which was significantly the lowest compared with other treatments under study. In case of soil properties, the highest soil pH (6.21) and the highest soil organic matter (1.58%) in post-harvest soil was recorded from the treatment T₅ [Azotobacter (4 kg ha⁻¹) + 90 kg N ha⁻¹]. Considering the soil nutrients, the maximum total N (0.11%), the maximum available phosphorous (25.96 ppm), the maximum available sulphur (20.73 ppm) and the highest exchangeable K (0.129 me%) in post-harvest soil was recorded from the treatment T₅ [Azotobacter (4 kg ha⁻¹) + 90 kg N ha⁻¹]. It can be said that Azotobacter along with nitrogenous fertilizer improved soil chemical properties along with increased availability of essential plant nutrients in soil solution. Azotobacter (4 kg ha⁻¹) + 90 kg N ha⁻¹ application seemed promising for producing higher grain yield of wheat and sustaining soil productivity.Item MARKETING EFFICIENCY AND TRANSACTION COST ANALYSIS OF MAIZE IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF DINAJPUR DISTRICT(DEPT. OF AGRIBUSINESS AND MARKETING, 2014) ISLAM, MD. MONIRULThe present study was undertaken to determine marketing efficiency and transaction cost analysis of maize from Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. This study was based on a survey of 20 farmers and 40 maize traders from Birgonj and Biral upazila of Dinajpur district. Primary data were collected from maize farmers and traders during the months of August and September, 2013. The study identified five most prominent channels of maize marketing. The channels were i) FarmersFarias-wholesalers-Aratdars-feed mills ii) Farmers-wholesalers-Aratdars-feed mills iii) FarmersAratdars-feed mills iv) Farmers-wholesalers-feed mills, and v) Farmers- Farias-Aratdars-feed mills. Among these channels highest amount of maize (45%) moved through channel III (Farmers-Aratdars-feed mills) and lowest (5%) through channel I (Farmers-Farias-wholesalersAratdars-feed mills). The producers’ share to consumers’ price (89.98%) was found to be highest in channel III and lowest in channel I (75.15%). Marketing cost and marketing margin were lowest for channel III (Tk. 102.77 and Tk. 190, respectively) and highest for channel I (Tk. 312.85 and Tk. 470 respectively). The highest cost item was transportation (46.43%) and lowest was information search (0.95%). Marketing costs and marketing margins were highest for wholesalers (46.30% and 42.55%) respectively and lowest for Farias (20.84% and 17.02%) respectively. The deviation between maximum and minimum price of a month was highest (Tk. 257.86) in channel IV and lowest (Tk. 197.86) in channel I. Seasonal price variability was highest (74.85) in channel I and lowest (26.15) in channel III. Channel III (Farmers-Aratdars-Feed mills) was the most efficient channel. The main transaction cost items were search cost, screening cost, bargaining cost, monitoring cost and enforcement cost. Total transaction cost incurred by the intermediaries was Tk. 33.02 per 100 kg of maize. Search cost incurred by the intermediaries was Tk. 3.80 for 100kg of maize which was 11.52% of total transaction cost. Screening cost, monitoring cost, bargaining cost and enforcement cost were Tk. 10.26 (31.08%), Tk. 10.50 (31.80%), Tk. 8.48 (25.67%) and Tk. 0 (0%), respectively. Transaction cost for wholesalers was highest (39.10%) and lowest (30.13%) for Farias. Marketing problems of farmers and intermediaries were low local demand, poor transportation facilities, market toll, lack of credit facilities, absence of storage facilities, lack of adequate market information and lack of available market place. Establishment of feed mills nearest to the production point, advertising through electronic and print media, improvement of road and communication facilities, lessening of market toll, credit facilities from credit institution, improvement of storage facilities and quick and appropriate market were the possible measures to solve those problems.Item MICROPROPAGATION OF STRAWBERRY (Fragaria×ananassa Duch.)(DEPARTMENT OF BIOTECHNOLOGY SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY SHER-E-BANGLA NAGAR, DHAKA -1207, 2018-12) ISLAM, MD. MONIRULThe present research was carried out in Biotechnology Laboratory of the Department of Biotechnology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-eBangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 from the period of May 2018 to November 2018 for in vitro renegaration of strawberry. The healthy, disease free shoot tips of 0.501.0 cm length were used as explants, It was sterilized by 0.1% HgCl 2 mixing with few drops Tween-20. The explant was inoculated in MS media supplemented with different combination of the BA (1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 mg/l) and IBA (0.50, 1.00, 1.50, 2.00 and 2.50 mg/l) either alone or in combination. The maximum days for shoot induction were recorded in control treatment. The highest number of shoots (3.60) in BA 2.0 mg/l and leaves (9.60) per explant observed in BA 3.0mg/l. In contrast combine treatment of 2.0 mg/l BA+1.00 mg/l IBA performed best in case of percentage shoot induction (80%) and number of shoots (3.60).The highest length of shoots (3.66 cm) in BA 2.0 mg/l+ IBA 2.0mg/l . It was noticed that the minimum days to shoot induction, percent shoot initiation and no. of shoot were recorded in 2.0 mg/l BA+1.0 mg/l IBA. The highest number of leaves per explant was recorded in 2.0 mg/l BA+0.5 mg/l IBA. The highest number of root was observed in 2.0 mg/l BA+ 1.5 mg/l IBA and the highest percent root initiation in 3.0 mg/l BA+1.5 mg/l IBA Overall, micropropagation was found to be very effective and promising method in the proliferation of strawberry and this experiment can be a useful tool for breeding program of strawberry. Finally, the survival rate of micropropagated plantlets were observed in open atmosphere 75% and 80% in controlled condition.
