    CHARACTERIZATION AND VARIABILITY STUDY OF SOME ADVANCED BORO LINES

    The investigation was carried out under the field conditions to characterize and variability study among the ten F 8 advanced boro rice lines and two checks (BRRI dhan 28 and BRRI dhan 29) during the period of boro season (2016-2017) at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka1207.The ten advanced lines of boro rice and two checks were characterized for 31qualitative and 10 quantitative traits as a part of the release procedure. Variability study are carried out on twelve parameters to select the best lines for further trial. All the lines were characterized and categorized as per the descriptors developed by Biodiversity International, IRRI and WARDA-2007 for DUS test of inbred rice. Among the qualitative characters variation was observed in penultimate leaf pubescence, stigma exertion, attitude of the flag leaf blade, panicle curvature, panicle attitude of branches and panicle exertion. Among all the quantitative characters time of heading (50% of plants with heads), stem: culm diameter, panicle length, number of effective tillers per plant, time of maturity, thousand grain weight and decorticated grain length showed difference for all the lines which considered for better agronomic performance. The average days to maturity was 136 days and most of the lines resulted in early maturity and lodging resistance. Most of the lines showed average number of effective tillers per plant was 12 tillers and panicle length was 22.74 cm resulted in higher yield per plant. The average thousand grain weight was 24.71 gm and average yield was 8.69 ton/ha. In case of variability study plant height, number of effective tillers, length of panicle, number of primary branches per panicle, number of secondary branches per panicle, total spikelet/panicle, no. filled grains per panicle, thousand seed weight and yield/ha showed significant variations among the lines. Comparing with the check varieties L11 (BRRI dhan 28) (8.45 t/ha) and L12 (BRRI dhan 29) (8.37 t/ha), the lines L2 (8.97 t/ha), L3 (8.79 t/ha), L4 (9.43 t/ha), L5 (9.27 t/ha), L8 (9.19 t/ha), L9 (9.61 t/ha) showed the higher yield and short duration. Thus the lines L2, L3, L4, L5, L8 and L9 would be suitable for released as high yielding boro rice variety for their short duration and high yielding characters.

    EFFECT OF VERMICOMPOST ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF POTATO (Solanum tuberosum L.)

    An experiment was carried out at the Horticulture Farm, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2014 to February 2015 to evaluate the effect of vermicompost on growth and yield of potato. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The experiment consisted of two factors viz., three varieties (V 1 = Diamant, V 2 = Cardinal and V = Lady Rosetta) and four levels of vermicompost (T 0 = Control, T 1 iii 3 = Vermicompost at 6 t ha -1 , T = Vermicompost at 8 t ha -1 and T 3 = Vermicompost at 10 t ha -1 2 ). Results revealed that variety and vermicompost and also their interaction had significant effect on all growth parameters and yield contributing characters. In case of variety, and vermicompost the highest tuber yield (24.64 t ha -1 ) and (26.30 t ha ) were found from V 1 and T respectively. In terms of combined effect the highest number of tuber hill -1 2 (8.1), weight of tuber hill -1 -1 (343.3 g), tuber weight plot (6.18 kg), dry weight of 100 g tuber (23.2 g) and the highest tuber weight ha (27.47 t) were obtained from V 1 T . So, it can be concluded that vermicompost 8 t ha -1 can be used as organic manure.

    HOST PREFERENCE OF RED PUMPKIN BEETLE, Aulacophora foveicollis Lucas IN DIFFERENT CUCURBITS

    The experiment was conducted in the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the period from May to August, 2014 to study the host preference of red pumpkin beetle (Aulacophora foveicollis Lucas ) in different cucurbits. The research consists of three cucurbitaceous plants viz. sweet gourd, bottle gourd and bitter gourd. The seeds of these varieties were collected from the BADC, Jessore. The experiment was laid out in single factor Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data were recorded on damage of infested cotyledon, number of infested plants pit-1, number of infested leaves plant-1, number of total infested leaves plot-1, damage of infested flowers and percent damage of infested fruits. Sweet gourd cotyledon showed the maximum (47.67%) damage than that of other cucurbits at 20 DAS, all plants of sweet gourd pit-1 were infested by red pumpkin beetle. The highest leaf infestation was observed in sweet gourd at 50 DAS. The highest flower damage (31%) plot-1 was also observed in sweet gourd at 35 (DAS), where as the highest (39.89%) damage percentage of infested fruits plot-1 was also observed in sweet gourd at 50 DAS. Sweet gourd was found in highly preferred condition by RPB and bitter gourd was found in least preferred condition by red pumpkin beetle in this study.

    INFLUENCE OF PHOSPHORUS AND POTASSIUM ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF MUNGBEAN (BARI Mung-6)

    The experiment was conducted at the research plot of the department of Soil science of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from February, 2014 to June, 2014 to study the influence of phosphorus and potassium on growth and yield of mungbean. The experiment was designed with three phosphorus level viz. P and three different potassium level viz. K 0 (0 kg P/ha), P 0 1 (15 kg P/ha), P (0 kg K/ha), K 1 2 (20 kg P/ha) (15 kg K/ha) and K (20 kg K/ha). The experiment was laid out in a two factors randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Results showed that different phosphorus and potassium levels significantly differed the growth and yield contributing characters of mungbean. The maximum seed yield (1.65 t ha (1.56 t ha (1.90 t ha 20 K kg ha -1 -1 -1 ) was recorded in 20 P kg ha ) was obtained from 20 K kg ha -1 treatments. The maximum seed yield -1 treatment. The highest seed yield ) was recorded with the treatment combination of 20 P kg ha -1 . On the other hand, the lowest seed yield (0.95 t ha -1 control treatment (no phosphorus and no potassium). The maximum N, P and K concentration in stover and soil was recorded in the 20 kg P/ha treatment. The -1 2 with ) was found in maximum N, P and K concentration in stover and soil was recorded in the 20 kg K/ha treatment. The highest N, P and K concentration in stover and soil was recorded in 20 kg P/ha with 20 kg K/ha treatment combination. Mungbean yield was increased with increasing the P and K levels.
