Item An Econometric Investigation of Infant Mortality Scenarios in Bangladesh(Daffodil International University, 2010-12-01) Hossain, Md. Jamal; Kamal, Khnd. Md. MostafaIn this paper, three econometric models (linear regression model, Reciprocal model & Double-log or log-linear regression model) comprised one outcome variable (infant mortality rate) and three explanatory variables (per capita gross domestic product, per capita health expenditure and mean age at marriage of female) have been considered over the period 1980 to 2007 for Bangladesh. At all stages of fitting model, it has been observed that at least one of the independent variables had significant effect on infant mortality rate. After removing multicollinearity and autocorrelation, two independent variables (per capita health expenditure and mean age at marriage of female) had significant effect on infant mortality rate in case of reciprocal model but per capita health expenditure had substantial effect on infant mortality rate in three econometric models. Results indicate for the policy makers at the national level for raising per capita health expenditure to decrease infant mortality rate.Item Antidiabetic Potential of Commonly Available Fruit Plants in Bangladesh: Updates on Prospective Phytochemicals and Their Reported MoAs(Scopus, 22-12-08) Alam, Safaet; Hasan, Anik Dhar Muhib; Richi, Fahmida Tasnim; Emon, Nazim Uddin; Aziz, Md. Neamul Kabir; Haque, Mohammad Rashedul; Mohamed, Isa Naina; Rashid, Mohammad A.Diabetes mellitus is a life-threatening disorder affecting people of all ages and adversely disrupts their daily functions. Despite the availability of numerous synthetic-antidiabetic medications and insulin, the demand for the development of novel antidiabetic medications is increasing due to the adverse effects and growth of resistance to commercial drugs in the long-term usage. Hence, antidiabetic phytochemicals isolated from fruit plants can be a very nifty option to develop life-saving novel antidiabetic therapeutics, employing several pathways and MoAs (mechanism of actions). This review focuses on the antidiabetic potential of commonly available Bangladeshi fruits and other plant parts, such as seeds, fruit peals, leaves, and roots, along with isolated phytochemicals from these phytosources based on lab findings and mechanism of actions. Several fruits, such as orange, lemon, amla, tamarind, and others, can produce remarkable antidiabetic actions and can be dietary alternatives to antidiabetic therapies. Besides, isolated phytochemicals from these plants, such as swertisin, quercetin, rutin, naringenin, and other prospective phytochemicals, also demonstrated their candidacy for further exploration to be established as antidiabetic leads. Thus, it can be considered that fruits are one of the most valuable gifts of plants packed with a wide spectrum of bioactive phytochemicals and are widely consumed as dietary items and medicinal therapies in different civilizations and cultures. Climate change negatively impacts human rights in a wide range of ways. The study aims to find out the impact of climate change on aging health in developing countries. The study found that public health will be devastated if climate change continues unabated. Countries that are least responsible for global warming are most susceptible to the effects of higher temperatures, such as death and disease. In low- and middle-income countries, disasters are more likely to happen to people aged 60 and over. Although climate change affects all of us, older people are especially at risk from it, as evidenced by a growing body of research. The study also offers countermeasures and suggestions to develop aging health in developing countries affected by climate change.Item Discrimination and Social Exclusion of Third-Gender Population (Hijra) in Bangladesh(Scopus, 22-09-26) Al-Mamun, Md.; Hossain, Md. It is their birthright to make use of society's opportunities and amenities. This overview aimed to summarize the stigma, prejudice, exclusions, and discriminatory attitudes toward third-gender populations (Hijra) in Bangladesh from the mainstream society based on a critical assessment of available data and evidence. The paper also explored the socio-economic situation of the third-gender community in Bangladesh regarding income, education, health, housing, social relations, and outcome through a critical literature review. Here, we have highlighted the magnitudes of social exclusion that the Hijra minority group in Bangladesh experiences. The Hijra in Bangladesh faces severe mistreatment due to socio-cultural norms. This minority group suffers from extreme social, cultural, political, and economic exclusion in Bangladesh. Their livelihood is different than other communities in the society. The primary source of income for hijras in Bangladesh is begging and prostitution. They have no access within civil society, even in times of recreational and marital practices. People are unreasonably afraid of their presence in public places. Apart from that, they are physically and psychologically abused and deprived of appropriate medical and civil support. Hijras are deprived of government facilities and are accustomed to miserable lifestyles in Bangladesh. They are the most vulnerable and disadvantaged minority as they lack access to quality services, health care, and employment opportunities. Social recognition and financial independence may be the first step to alleviating discrimination toward the third-gender population. Government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) should be concerned about ensuring the rights of the Hijra community must be protected.Item Impact of Prolonged COVID-19 Lockdown on Body Mass Index, Eating Habits, and Physical Activity of University Students in Bangladesh(Daffodil International University, 2022-05-20) Hossain, Md. Moklesur Rahman; Mohamed, Isa NainaObjectives: This current study aims to assess the prevalence and factors associated with body mass index (BMI), dietary patterns, and the extent of physical activities among university students following the prolonged coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) lockdown in Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted between July 10 to August 10, 2021, through a pre-designed Google Form to collect the data from Bangladeshi university students (age: ≥18 years). Informed consent was electronically obtained from each participant, and a simple snowball technique was employed during the sampling. Frequency and percentage distribution, paired t-test, chi-square [χ2] test, and multinomial and binary logistic regression analyses were consecutively applied to analyze the collected data. Results: Among the total participants (n = 1,602), 45.1% were female and 55.6% were 22-25 years' age group students. The BMI (mean ± standard deviation, SD) during the COVID-19 lockdown was 23.52 ± 7.68 kg/m2, which was 22.77 ± 4.11 kg/m2 during the pre-lockdown period (mean difference = 0.753; p < 0.001). The multinomial logistic regression analysis found a significant impact of gender [male vs. female: adjusted relative risk ratio (RRR) = 1.448; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.022, 2.053; p = 0.037], age (years) (<22 vs. >25: RRR =0.389, 95% CI = 0.213,0.710; p = 0.002, and 22-25 vs. >25: RRR = 0.473, 95% CI = 0.290, 0.772; p = 0.003), monthly family income (BDT) (<25,000 vs. >50,000: RRR = 0.525, 95% CI = 0.334,0.826; p = 0.005), university type (public vs. private: RRR = 0.540, 95% CI = 0.369, 0.791; p = 0.002), eating larger meals/snacks (increased vs. unchanged: RRR = 2.401, 95% CI = 1.597, 3.610; p < 0.001 and decreased vs. unchanged: RRR = 1.893, 95% CI = 1.218, 2.942; p = 0.005), and verbally or physically abuse (yes vs. no: RRR = 1.438, 95% CI = 0.977, 2.116; p = 0.066) on obesity during COVID-19 pandemic. Besides, the female students and those who have constant eating habits, were more likely to be underweight. Additionally, the binary logistic regression analysis found that the students from private universities [others vs. private: adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.461, 95% CI = 0.313, 0.680; p < 0.001], urban areas (urban vs. rural: AOR = 1.451, 95% CI = 1.165, 1.806; p = 0.001), wealthier families (<25,000 BDT vs. >50,000 BDT: AOR = 0.727, 95% CI = 0.540, 0.979; p = 0.036), and who were taking larger meals/snacks (increased vs. unchanged: AOR = 2.806, 95% CI = 2.190, 3.596; p < 0.001) and had conflicts/arguments with others (no vs. yes: AOR = 0.524, 95% CI = 0.418, 0.657; p < 0.001), were significantly more physically inactive. Finally, the level of education and smoking habits significantly influenced the eating habits of university students during the extended strict lockdown in Bangladesh. Conclusion: The current findings would be helpful tools and evidence for local and international public health experts and policymakers to reverse these worsening effects on students mediated by the prolonged lockdown. Several effective plans, programs, and combined attempts must be earnestly implemented to promote a smooth academic and daily life.Item Modified Coptisine Derivatives as an Inhibitor Against Pathogenic Rhizomucor miehei, Mycolicibacterium smegmatis (Black Fungus), Monkeypox, and Marburg Virus by Molecular Docking and Molecular Dynamics Simulation-Based Drug Design Approach(Frontier Scientific Publishing, 2023-04-19) Akash, Shopnil; Hossain, Arafat; Mukerjee, Nobendu; Sarker, Md. Jamal; Rashid, Mohammad A.; Kumer, Ajoy; Ghosh, Arabinda; León-Figueroa, Darwin A.; Barboza, Joshuan J.; Padhi, Bijaya Kumar; Sah, Ranjit"During the second phase of SARS-CoV-2, an unknown fungal infection, identified as black fungus, was transmitted to numerous people among the hospitalized COVID-19 patients and increased the death rate. The black fungus is associated with the Mycolicibacterium smegmatis, Mucor lusitanicus, and Rhizomucor miehei microorganisms. At the same time, other pathogenic diseases, such as the Monkeypox virus and Marburg virus, impacted global health. Policymakers are concerned about these pathogens due to their severe pathogenic capabilities and rapid spread. However, no standard therapies are available to manage and treat those conditions. Since the coptisine has significant antimicrobial, antiviral, and antifungal properties; therefore, the current investigation has been designed by modifying coptisine to identify an effective drug molecule against Black fungus, Monkeypox, and Marburg virus. After designing the derivatives of coptisine, they have been optimized to get a stable molecular structure. These ligands were then subjected to molecular docking study against two vital proteins obtained from black fungal pathogens: Rhizomucor miehei (PDB ID: 4WTP) and Mycolicibacterium smegmatis (PDB ID 7D6X), and proteins found in Monkeypox virus (PDB ID: 4QWO) and Marburg virus (PDB ID 4OR8). Following molecular docking, other computational investigations, such as ADMET, QSAR, drug-likeness, quantum calculation and molecular dynamics, were also performed to determine their potentiality as antifungal and antiviral inhibitors. The docking score reported that they have strong affinities against Black fungus, Monkeypox virus, and Marburg virus. Then, the molecular dynamic simulation was conducted to determine their stability and durability in the physiological system with water at 100 ns, which documented that the mentioned drugs were stable over the simulated time. Thus, our in silico investigation provides a preliminary report that coptisine derivatives are safe and potentially effective against Black fungus, Monkeypox virus, and Marburg virus. Mitochondrial complexes I, II, III, IV, and V are the most common sites for the induction of inhibition by drug candidates, henceforth alleviating the manifestations, prevalence, as well as severity of diseases. Though there are few therapeutic options currently available on the market. However, it is crucial to develop new candidates from natural resources, as mitochondria-targeting abnormalities are rising to a greater extent. Marine and terrestrial sources possess plenty of bioactive compounds that are appeared to be effective in this regard. Ample research investigations have been performed to appraise the potentiality of these compounds in terms of mitochondrial disorders. So, this review outlines the role of terrestrial and marine-derived compounds in mitochondrial inhibition as well as their clinical status too. RabiulFast foods are defined as those foods made and served in a short period of time and are consumed outside of the house. In other words, it may be characterized as foods that have been cooked with reduced nutritional value. 1 Fast food negatively affects diet quality, body weight, and overall health. 2,3 Fast food consump- tion continues to grow in Western nations and is particularly prevalent among youngsters. This harmful behavior is increasing in underdeveloped countries. 4 When students join university, they have increased autonomy over their lifestyles, particularly their eating choices and practices, mainly if they are away from their families. The food intake patterns and nutritional concerns associated with university students are a significant source of worry. In recent years, global emphasis has been focused on university students' nutritional understanding and food consump- tion trends. 4 Fast food is consumed on a daily basis by 30%–50% of youngsters and college students. 5,6 Evidence found that 77% of overweight and obese university students have consumed fast food and cake on a regular or frequent basis. 7 Approximately 22% of the Bangladeshi university students had fast food for 4 days each week, while 21.3% reported having fast food for every day of the week. 4 More frequent consumption of fried foods is strongly linked to an increased risk of chronic disease develop- ment (i.e., four or more times per week). 8 There is compelling evidence that eating fried foods increases adults' chance of developing chronic illnesses. However, a comprehensive analysis of the impacts of fried foods on the health of university students in Bangladesh is limited. The objective of the study is to evaluate the prevalence of fried food consumption during Ramadan month among university students in Bangladesh. Herbal drugs have gained popularity in recent years because of their strength, purity, and cheap cost-effectiveness. Citrus fruits contain significant amounts of flavanones, which falls to the category of polyphenols. Flavanones occupy a major fraction of the total polyphenols present in the plasma when orange juice is taken highly or in moderate states. Narirutin is a disaccharide derivative available in citrus fruits, primarily dihydroxy flavanone. From a pharmacological viewpoint, narirutin is a bioactive phytochemical with therapeutic efficacy. Many experimental researches were published on the use of narirutin. Anticancer activity, neuroprotection, stress relief, hepatoprotection, anti-allergic activity, antidiabetic activity, anti-adipogenic activity, anti-obesity action, and immunomodulation are a couple of the primary pharmacological properties. Narirutin also has antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. The ultimate goal of this review is to provide the current scenario of pharmacological research with narirutin; to make a better understanding for therapeutic potential of narirutin, as well as its biosynthesis strategies and side effects. Extensive literature searches and studies were undertaken to determine the pharmacological properties of narirutin.Item Sufism and morality with special reference to Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani and Shaikh Sharfuddin Maneri(University of Dhaka, 2019-10-06) Hossain, Md. JamalPracticing morality is indispensable for the spiritual development. But nowadays a trend is clearly visible which is directed towards material gains and carnal enjoyments by passing moral outlook. In many countries the moral and spiritual degradation is on its last limit. In this situation, the world requires such a kind of philosophy which simultaneously emphasizes material as well as spiritual development of a person. Sufism is an excellent expression of that thinking. The lesson of Sufism is that a individual will live in a society but he will be free from its carnality. The purpose of the present thesis is to find out the close relation between Sufism (mystical philosophy of Islam) and morality, with the special emphasizes on the moral thoughts of two great Sufis– Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani and Shaikh Sharfuddin Maneri and to explore the comprehensiveness of Sufi morality. For the above purpose we have designed the thesis in seven chapters whose summary (abstract) is stated below. In Chapter One– Introduction, the basic theme of the thesis, „morality‟ has been explained. The discussion consists of a number of sub-headings: What is morality? Where does morality come from? Relation between religion and morality, Why should human being be moral? Development of morality and above all, morality in different mystical traditions. In the discussion of historical evaluation of morality and religion based mystical traditions, it has been unveiled that moral views of philosophers and mystics are somehow similar to Sufi approach to morality. In Chapter Two – Islamic Concept of Morality, an attempt has been made to give an overview of morality from Islamic perspective. For that, the chapter has been designed in the flowing sub-headings: Nature of Islamic Ethics, Significance of life, Islamic view about moral judgment, Moral standard, Impact of motive and intention, Source of good and evil, Moral significance of Islamic creed and Moral law of Islam. Here it has been distinctly mentioned that in Islam, religiosity and morality are interrelated. A believer follows the commands of God which is based on morality and thus he comes closer to God; at the same time he achieves moral perfection. It is also revealed that man‟s conscience naturally makes a distinction between good and evil. Revelation (al-Qur’an) and the teachings of the Prophet (Sunnah) awaken human conscience which usually remains asleep because of inherent evil tendencies in human being. In Chapter Three– An Overview of Sufism, a comprehensive idea of Sufism, i.e., its aim, nature, origin, development and chief doctrines have been presented. Here it has been shown that Sufism is thoroughly based on the moral philosophy of Islam. It teaches how a devotee can build an excellent moral character. In Chapter Four – Relation Between Sufism and Morality, attempt has been made to divulge how Sufism is related to morality. For that purpose the chapter has been divided into the flowing sub headings: Moral analysis of Sufism, Relation of Sufi moral values with religion, Enjoining good and prohibiting evil, Moral training of the Sufis, Characteristics of Sufi morality etc. Here it is shown that moral elements of Sufism and general morality interweave each other. It is also shown that enjoining good action, prohibiting evil action and actual practicing of it are the basic characteristics of Sufi ethics. In Chapter Five– Morality in Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani’s Writings, it has been found that very life of the Shaikh which was based on struggling for being moral. In his moral teaching it has been disclosed that he has emphasized on purification of soul, (i. e. curbing lower self), social justice, altruism, opposition of egoism, brotherhood of mankind, importance of knowledge, above all truthfulness and love of God. Besides these, he has taken self control or perfectionism as a moral standard. In Chapter Six – Morality in Shaikh Sharfuddin Maneri’s Writings, a brief life sketch of Shaikh Sharfuddin Ahmad Maneri has been given which itself represents his moral teachings. The most important aspect of his ethical philosophy is internal purity and the service of humanity; service is the easiest and fastest way to acquire the nearness of God, according to him. To him, a Sufi is one whose life is dedicated to the service of humanity. It is better than traditional prayers. Through it an individual can improve his morality, become a leader and can lead a moral life. Besides these, in his moral teachings he has opposed egoism, and emphasized on altruism, building good moral character, acquisition of knowledge, social ethics, removing bad habits etc. For moral judgment he put emphasis on intention. In Chapter Seven- Concluding Remarks, the findings of the thesis have been summed up. It is revealed that Sufism is the moral philosophy of Islam. It is fully based on the Holy Qur‟an and the tradition of the Prophet (SAW). Its central theme is purification of soul (i.e. curbing lower self or nafs) improvement of one‟s moral and builds up one‟s inner and outer life. Its aim is the attainment of eternal felicities as well as moral perfection. Like other Sufis, Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani and Shaikh Sharfuddin Maneri strongly uphold the basic principles of Sufi morality which are also apprised by moral philosophers. These are altruism, humanism, justice, service of humanity, asceticism, lawful earning, truthfulness, good conducts etc. At the same time, like other Sufis, they strongly opposed egoism, violence, hatred, hypocrisy, arrogance, revenge, vindictiveness, and encouraged non-violence, non-communalism, large-heartedness, benevolence and magnanimity, which are the most significant virtues of Sufi life.Item Synergistic Effects of Carotenoids: Therapeutic Benefits on Human Health(Elsevier, 2024-01-20) Islam, Fahadul; Khan, Jishan; Zehravi, Mehrukh; Das, Rajib; Haque, M. Jamal; Muzammil, Khursheed; Emran, Talha BinCarotenoids are naturally occurring compounds that are abundant and possess synergistic properties, contributing to their potential health benefits. This review provides an analysis of synergistic relationships among carotenoid compounds. The concept of synergy is of utmost importance due to the ongoing emphasis on consumer safety issues related to botanical natural products. To date, there is a lack of scientific reports specifically investigating the experimental evidence of synergistic effects associated with carotenoids. The carotenoid compounds purported to exhibit synergistic actions have demonstrated significant efficacy in combating oxidation, neurological diseases, peptic ulcers, tumors, and various other ailments. Furthermore, there have been reports of cancer prevention through apoptosis and the presence of antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and estrogenic properties. In addition to the observed combined benefits of carotenoids, this review elucidates the various health advantages associated with carotenoids. Among carotenoids, a substantial amount of data has been reported concerning lycopene. This review also examined the clinical status of the concurrent utilization of carotenoids with other bioactive molecules. Jamal; Safi, Sher Zaman; Sweilam, Sherouk HusseinTacrine is a drug used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease as a cognitive enhancer and inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE). However, its clinical application has been restricted due to its poor therapeutic efficacy and high prevalence of detrimental effects. An attempt was made to understand the molecular mechanisms that underlie tacrine and its analogues influence over neurotherapeutic activity by focusing on modulation of neurogenesis, neuroinflammation, endoplasmic reticulum stress, apoptosis, and regulatory role in gene and protein expression, energy metabolism, Ca2+ homeostasis modulation, and osmotic regulation. Regardless of this, analogues of tacrine are considered as a model inhibitor of cholinesterase in the therapy of Alzheimer’s disease. The variety both in structural make-up and biological functions of these substances is the main appeal for researchers’ interest in them. A new paradigm for treating neurological diseases is presented in this review, which includes treatment strategies for Alzheimer’s disease, as well as other neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease and the synthesis and biological properties of newly identified versatile tacrine analogues and hybrids. We have also shown that these analogues may have therapeutic promise in the treatment of neurological diseases in a variety of experimental systems.
