Item Air Quality Measurement at the Solid Waste Disposal of Matuail Landfill Site at Dhaka, Bangladesh(Science Publications, 2019-10-19) Hossain, Md. Faruque; Kamal, ASM Maksud; Sikder, Abdul Halim Farhad; Parveen, ZakiaAn investigation was conducted to assess the air quality impact and possible health risk of solid waste disposal on surrounding environment of Matuail landfill site in Dhaka city. Three different locations were selected for soil and plant samples. Leachate samples were collected from active dumping area and fish samples from treated leachate pond. Seven different locations were selected for air quality and health risk assessments. It is found that Cu, Zn and Pb concentrations were high in the soil of dumping and abandoned areas that exceeded the permissible limits. The heavy metal concentrations in plant samples did not show any significant contamination except Cu, Zn and Pb that also exceeded the permissible limits. The concentrations of DO, BOD, COD and TDS of the untreated leachate were found 1.34 mg L-1, 96 mg L-1, 1343 mg L-1 and 7120 mg L-1, respectively that exceeded inland surface water standard but after treatment its concentrations were found within the permissible limits. The presence of heavy metals in leachate sample was not contaminated as it was below the toxic limits. The bioaccumulation of fish sample from treated pond is extremely high of Fe, Mn, Pb and Ni that exceeded the WHO’s permissible limits. The air quality results showed that the Matuail landfill surrounding sites did not have an adverse effect. The air pollutants such as NOx, SO2, SPM, PM10, PM2.5 and CO contents are within national standard limits. Overall, the risk assessments demonstrated that potential air emissions from the Matuail Landfill site do not pose public health risks. It is clear that if the dumping landfill site is properly managed by segregating the waste according to their source, then this waste could be used as compost or organic manures. However, by maintaining disposal sites with controlled placement and proper treatment of the waste may reduce the possible adverse impact on air, human health and agri-environmental eco-systems. Further investigation on the impacts related to the final disposal of solid waste and the future landfill requirement at different composting and a comparative study is suggested.Item Electromagnetic Field Analysis of Lightning Return Stroke Current(Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), Khulna, Bangladesh., 2006-02) Hossain, Md. Abul KalamAccurate knowledge of the characteristics of lightning electromagnetic fields is needed for studying the effects of the potentially deleterious coupling of lightning fields to various circuits and systems, for achieving an efficient insulation design of electric power networks and for determining electromagnetic compatibility requirements o telecommunication systems. In the first step, lightning analysis requires the development of return stroke models, which are able to reproduce the electromagnetic field signature similar to that generated by natural return stroke. In this thesis, the lightning return stroke is, firstly, assumed as a current pulse originating at ground level and propagating along the channel of perfect electrical conductor. Then the effects of channel resistance and inductance both on the current and the electromagnetic fields are investigated. The results show that the inclusion of channel resistance and inductance will change the prediction of the model in such a direction that they will come closer to the experimental observations. Reviewing different models, electromagnetic model is used in the present study. For the accurate analysis of the transient electromagnetic field around a three-dimensional (31)) conductor system, application ol electromagiietic modeling codes are more appropriate. Among many available codes, Numerical Electromagnetic Code (NEC-2) based on the 4 method of moments is chosen for the above purpose since it has been widely and successfully used in analyzing thin-wire antennas. The effect of ground electrical parameter on the channel current and remote electromagnetic fields is deduced in the present thesis for several grounds. With different methodologies different input data are involved in the lightning analysis: one of them is related to the lightning current itself. The effect of different current wave-shapes is also investigated in this work. Experimental observations and theoretical investigations have shown that the presence of an elevated strike object (such as a tall tower) could affect lightning current and their radiated electromagnetic fields substantially. lherefore, an analysis of tower current and remote electromagnetic fields radiated by lightning return strokes to tall towers is presented taking two towers of different heights. In the work, both the slow-front and steep-front wave-shapes, corresponding respectively to typical first and subsequent return strokes, are adopted as injected current wavefonii. Because, the subsequent return strokes that are characterized by lower current peaks but higher front steepness and return stroke speed may result in higher field peaks. It is shown in particular that the presence of a tower tends, in general, to increase substantially the electric and magnetic field peaks and their derivatives. Furthermore, the presented results are shown to be consistent with recent experimental observations of current in lightning strokes to the high stack in Japan and Toronto CN Tower and of the associated electromagnetic fields. Finally, to show the validity of the model, some results calculated by NEC-2 are compared with the results calculated by Virtual Surge Test Lab (VSTL), which is based on Finite Difference Time Domain (FD'l'D) method. In such case, reduced scale model is considered because of large computation time of FI)TD method.Item Factors that are influencing the Employee job satisfactions in private banking sector of Bangladesh An empirical analysis(American International University-Bangladesh, 2022-01-31) Kundu, Debashis; Hasan, Farhat Binte; Hossain, Md. FaruqueIn the modern era, tangible and intangible compensation, physical stress, lack of supervision, and workplace hygiene are the major factors in job satisfaction. One of the many challenges for the private banking sector in Bangladesh is to satisfy its employees, and the diligence of the research is to observe how different factors influence job satisfaction. As a result, the proposed study delineates many factors for employees, such as compensation, empowerment, work environment, and performance appraisal, that lead to positive and significant relationships in job satisfaction. The stimulus-response model was used as a theoretical research framework, and the private banking sector of Bangladesh was selected through quantitative methodology. Hence, the survey is conducted in a quantitative way, non-experimental and explanatory field study to analyze the relationship between the dependent and independent variables. The managerial employees of the private banking sector are the targeted group. The research results established a significant positive relationship between compensation policy, empowerment, performance appraisal, and employee job satisfaction. Whereas, the workplace environment has an insignificant positive correlation among job satisfaction, turnover rate, and productivity. Furthermore, an empirical analysis revealed that compensation policies, empowerment, and performance appraisal can maximize the level of employee job satisfaction, which leads to an increase in their sustainable productivity at work.Item Mineral association in clay fractions of some soils in Barind and Madhupur Tracts and its impact on soil properties(New Delhi Publishers, 2011) Hossain, Md. Three different locations such as current dumping, abandoned and its surrounded agricultural areas of Matuail landfill were selected for soil and plant samples, leachate from active dumping and fish samples from treated leachate pond. The Cu, Zn and Pb concentrations were high in the dumping (360 µg g-1 Cu, 806 µg g-1 Zn and 382 µg g-1 Pb) and abandoned (199 µg g-1 Cu, 452 µg g-1 Zn and 519 µg g-1 Pb) areas that exceeded the permissible limits. The heavy metal concentrations in plant samples did not show any significant contamination except Cu, Zn and Pb that also exceeded the permissible limits. On the other side, the organic matter and nutrient concentrations such as N, P, K and S of both soil and plant samples are within desirable value in the studied area. The concentrations of DO, BOD, COD and TDS of the untreated leachate were found 1.34 mg L-1, 96 mg L-1, 1343 mg L-1 and 7120 mg L-1, respectively that exceeded inland surface water standard but after treatment the concentrations of DO, BOD and TDS in the treated leachate pond were found within the permissible limit. Faruque; Ahmed, NisarThis paper demonstrates how a change in monetary policy by lowering the interest rates can lead to a decline in savings in the short run. Almost perfect correlation coefficient exists between declined marginal savings and increased household desire to either invest or spend; hoarding proves to be minimal but there are limits to household investments. Corporate investment is also possibly affected by the new policy as consumerism and lower cost of capital encourages the firms to invest. Consumption also leads to indebtedness. However, the consumption patterns, capital flight and borrowing motives proves to be of alarming significance to the policy makers. In the long-run, monetary expansionary policy is forecasted to be ineffective.
