Item ANTIDIABETIC EFFECT OF ALOE VERA IN ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETIC RAT(Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), 2022-12) Islam, M. S.; Sarkar, S. K.; Hossain, M. M.; Masum, M. A.; Rahman, T.Oral anti-diabetic agents have a number of serious adverse effects, thus, managing diabetes without any side effects is still a challenge. Therefore, the search for many effective and safer hypoglycemic agents has continued to be an important area of investigation. Besides, drug classically used for the treatment of diabetes (insulin, sulphonylureas, biguanides and thazolidinediones), several species of plants have been described in the scientific and popular literatures having a hypoglycemic activity. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of Aloe vera on blood glucose level in rats in diabetic condition. In this study a total of 150 rats (50 normal rats and 100 alloxan induced diabetic rats) were used for five trials. The rats were divided into three groups for each trial, each containing 10 individuals as follows: Group A is the control, Group B as diabetic control and Group C were diabetic rat received Aloe vera. Then alloxan injection was injected at a dose rate of 100 mg/kg body weight through intra-peritoneal route to each rat to induce diabetes in groups B and C. Aqueous extract of Aloe vera were fed by gavage at a dose of 300 mg/kg body weight daily for 21 days in group C. On the 10th day blood glucose level and the body weights were measured for the first time to ensure diabetic induction. Then all the rats of this group were kept for more 21 days for the treatment of diabetic condition. During experimental period, day 0, 7, 14 and 21 blood samples were collected from all groups and determined their blood sugar level using diabetic kit. After 3 weeks of treatment the blood glucose level significantly (P<0.001) reduced in the group C compared to B from 260± 11.53 mg/dl to 91.21 ± 3.67 mg/dl. On the other hand, the average body weight was increased significantly (P<0.001) from 260 gm to 279.88 gm in the group C compared to that of B. From our findings, it is concluded that Aloe vera can be used as anti-diabetogenic agent in food.Item APPRAISAL OF SUIT ABILITY OF SHEEP CARCASS IN A COMMERCIAL SLAUGHTER HOUSE(2011) Hossain, M. M.; Rahman, M. A.; Talukder, A. K.; Islam, M. S.The study identified the common causes of organs and whole carcass condemnation of slaughtered sheep in a commercial abattoir in Bangladesh. A total number of 8046 sheep were slaughtered during the period from July 2007 to June 2008. Animals were undertaken into three ante-mortem inspections from arrival to slaughter. The first inspection was done immediately after unloading of animal, second during resting of the animals and the last inspection was performed before slaughtering of the animals. A total number of 703 organs from carcasses were condemned due to several reasons. The liver (42%) and lungs (39.1) were the most condemned organs in sheep. Fascioliasis was the leading cause of liver condemnation in sheep (86.8%). Pneumonia was the main cause of lung condemnations at the rate of 54.5% in sheep. Hydatidiosis caused both liver (6.4%) and lungs (40%) condemnation in sheep. Abscess was also responsible for organ condemnation affecting liver (6.8%), lungs (5.5%) and kidney (30.8%) in sheep. The major cause of muscles condemnation of sheep were due to cystocercosis (75.0%) and grass seed poisoning especially sorghum poisoning (25.0%).Grass seed poisoning was the only cause that was responsible for three sheep carcass whole condemnation. The results of the present study concluded that liver and lungs were the mostly affected organs to be condemned caused by mainly fascioliasis and pneumonia in sheep and grass seed poisoning was the single cause for whole carcass condemnation in sheepItem COMPARATIVE STUDY OF HEMATOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL PROFILES OF REPEAT BREEDING ZEBU COWS(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2011-01) Pariza, K. F.; Hossain, M. M.; Awal, M. A.; Islam, J.; Islam, M. A.The study was undertaken to know the hematological and biochemical profiles of repeat breeding zebu cows. Blood samples from cows with repeat breeding syndrome were collected for hematological, biochemical and humoral immune response analysis. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) was higher and hemoglobin (Hb) percentage was lower in repeat breeding cows than the normal cyclic cows. The packed cell volume (Pf.V) was lower in repeat breeding cows than in normal cyclic cows. Total erythrocyte count (TEC) is not signiticantly different whereas total leukocyte counts (TLC) significantly higher in repeat breeding cows. The bilirubin concentration was no! significantly higher (P< 0.01) in repeat breeding cows compared to the control groups of cows. The mean serum IgG was lower in repeat breeding cow than control groups of cows.Item COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF LOCALLY AVAILABLE BRICKS & SAND IN EASTERN REGION OF CHITTAGONG(Dept. of CE, CUET, 19-Dec-2018) Hossain, M. Problems frequently occur due to the use of low-quality bricks & sands. Bricks & sand that do not fulfil the quality standards make structures weak & faulty. Different field and laboratory tests are needed for quality control of these engineering materials. This study covers the experimental investigation sand and brick samples collected from ten different local areas of Chittagong district. These materials were tested through field and laboratory tests to assess their engineering properties in order to compare with standard limiting values. Unit weight, Fineness modulus, Salinity, Water Absorption Capacity, Specific gravity and Chloride tests were conducted for sand. Whereas Field Test, Size & Shape, Salinity, Chloride, Unit Weight, Water Absorption and Crushing Strength tests were performed for Bricks in the laboratory of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology. The properties of brick and sand samples are observed to vary for different sources. However, the test data may provide necessary information to ensure quality of construction works in this region.Item CULTURE SENSITIVITY PATTERNS OF BACTERIA ASSOCIATED WITH RESPIRA TORY ILLNESS IN HUMAN(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2011-07) Islam, M.; Rahman, M. M.; Khan, M. S. R.; Hossain, M. M.; Hasan, M. K.This study was designed to identify and determine in-vitro antibiotics sensitivity patterns of bacteria associated with respiratory illness of human. A total of 60 throat swab samples were aseptically collected from 3 age groups of 1-20 years (young), 21-40 years (adult) and 41-60 years (old). Isolated bacteria then subjected to determine their in-vitro antibiotic sensitivity patterns. From this study, it was observed that bacterial flora present in the throat swab of human with their percentage of distribution were Staphylococcus spp. (40.54%) of which Coagulase positive Staphylococcus (32.43%) and Coagulase negative Staphylococcus (8.11 %), Klebsiella spp. (24.325%), Pseudomonas spp. (18.92%), E. coli (8.11 %) and Bacillus spp. (8.11 %). Percentages of isolated bacteria in different age groups were 29.73% in young, 40.54% in adult and 29.73% in old. Among the isolates Coagulase positive Staphylococcus, Klebsiella and Pseudomonas were the predominant species. Percentages of Coagulase positive Staphylococcus spp. were high in age groups of 21-40 years (21.62%) whereas Klebsiella spp. were the predominant species of age groups of 1-20 years (10.81%) and 41-60 years (8.11%). Pseudomonas spp were the predominant species (8.11%) in age groups of 41-60 years. The isolated Coagulase positive Staphylococcus spp and Klebsiella spp were resistant 10 amoxicillin and ampicillin but sensitive to ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin and norfloxacin. Isolated Pseudomonas spp. showed resistant properties against amoxicillin, ampicillin petloxacin, gentamycin and furazolidone but sensitive to ciprofloxacin and nortloxacin.Item EFFECT OF ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION ON PREGNANCY RATE IN COWS AT MYMENSINGH DISTRICT IN BANGLADESH(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2011) Shohiduzzaman; Hossain, M. M.; Alam, J.; Islam, M.T.The study was conducted to determine the factors those affect the tirst service pregnancy rate (PR). A total of 180 cows, local 80, LocalxHolstein·Friesian(LxHF) 55 and localxSahiwal (LxSL) 45 were selected tram January, 2011 to December 2011 to identify the potential risk factors such as body weight, breed, age, body condition score (BCS) and season to first service. Overall pregnancy rate at first Al (FAI) was 53.3% (n=96). The highest pregnancy rate (56.3%) was observed in local cows, which was significantly (p<0.05) higher than that of Holstein-Friesian x Local (47.3%) cows. Cows of 4-5 years of old revealed a significantly (p<0.05) higher pregnancy rate than that of cows of 2·3 years age. The higher pregnancy rate (64.5%) was in cows of BCS 3.5 than lower BCS 2.5 cows (31%; p<0.05). The pregnancy rate was higher in cows weighing between 151-250 kg (57.1 %) and lower in cows up to 150 kg body weight (35%, p<0.05). J.; Beg, M. A. H.; Hossain, M. M.Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam. moringaceae) is a highly valued plant that is mostly cultivated in the tropics and subtropics. It is used for food, medication and industrial purposes. The objective of the study was to assess the nutritional value of Moringa leaves and to determine the effect of supplementing Moringa oleifera leaves (MOL) on growth performance, carcass and non-carcass characteristics of Black bengal goats. The dried leaves had crude protein levels of 30.3%. Thedried leaves had the following mineral contents: calcium (3.65%), phoshorus (0.3%), magnesium (0.5%), potassium (1.5%), sodium (0.164%), sulphur (0.63%), zinc (13.03 mglkg), copper (8.25%), manganese (86.8 mglkg), iron (490 mglkg) and selenium (363 mg/kg). The fiber content was neutral detergent fibre (NDF) (11.4%), acid detergent fibre (ADF) (8.49%), acid detergent lignin (ADL) (1.8%) and (acid detergent cellulose (ADC) (4.01 %). The condensed tannins had a value of 3.2%, while total polyphenols were 2.02%. In the other hand, a total of 36 castrated goats aged 8 months, with a mean initial weight of 7.63±O.8 kg, were randomly divided into three diet groups with twelve goats in each. The duration of the trial was 90 days. All goats received a basal diet of grass ad libitum and mixed basal diet (200 g/day each). The MOL groups were fed additional lOOg (MOLl) and 200 g (MOLZ) of dried M. aleifera leaves, respectively. The third group (Control) did not receive any additional ration. The attained average daily weight gain for goats fed MOLl, MOL2 and Con were 103.3, 101.3 and 43.3 g, respectively (p<0.05). Higher (P<0.05) feed intakes observed were in MOL2 (491.5 g) and MOLl (490.75 g) compared with Con (404.5 g). The hot carcass weight was higher (p<0.05) for MOL2 (7.18 kg) and MOLl (7.14 kg) than for the Con group (5.46 kg). The dressing percentage in MOL2 (50.8%) and MOLl (50.0%) were higher (P<0.05) than that of the Con (44.9%). The growth performance and carcass characteristics of MOL2 and MOll goats were not different. Moreover the experimental result reveal that MOL has a cholesterol lowering effect and no lesion has been identified in the gastrointestinal mucosa of the parasitized animals fed on MOL mixed diet. Feeding MOL improved the growth performance and carcass characteristics of goats in an almost similar way, which indicates that M. oleifera could be used as a supplement or additives in goats.Item GENETIC DIVERGENCE IN WHITE JUTE(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-07) Alam, M. Fifty one genotypes of white jute from different geographic origin were analyzed through principal component analysis. principal coordinate analysis. canonical variant analysis and cluster analysis by Mahalanobis 02 statistics with II morphological characters. All the genotypes were grouped into six different clusters. The cluster V and VI had the maximum ten genotypes while cluster I had the minimum of seven genotypes. The highest inter-genotypic distance (1.844) was found between G" and G~, and the lowest distance between G", and G,r, (0.233) The highest inter-cluster distance (14.367) was observed between cluster I and IV and the lowest distance (2.458) was found between cluster III and V. The highest intra-cluster distance was found in cluster 1(0.835) and lowest in cluster V(O.604)Item INCIDENCE OF SURGICAL CASES AT MIRZAPUR UPAZILA IN TANGAIL DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH(Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), 2022-12) Hossain, M. M.; Nazmunnnahar, N.; Akter, R.; Islam, M.This study was to determine the incidence of most common surgical cases in cattle, calves and goats at Mirzapur Upzilla Veterinary Hospital, Tangail during the period from January 2021 to December 2022. The total number of recorded cases were 900 (Cattle=328, Calves=472 and Goat=472) during the study period. The incidence rate of surgical affections in recorded is castration (23.77%), abscess (12.80%), wound (10.97%), fracture (9.76%), Navel ill (8.54%), Vaginal prolapsed (8.54%), Hernia (7.93%), Myiasis (6.71%), Atresia ani (5.49%), ovariohysterectomy (3.05%) and upward patellar fixation (2.44%). In calves, the rate was umbilical hernia (40%), umbilical abscess (15%), atresia ani(12%), naval myiasis and abscess (8%), intestinal prolapsed and fracture of jaw (2%). In small ruminants especially in goat the incidence rate was coenurosis (19.07%), subcutaneouscyst (13.98%), castration (13.56%), abscess (11.86%), fracture (8.90%), myiasis (8.47%), wound (6.36%), atresia ani (5.51%), urolithiasis (5.51%), hernia (4.24%) and ovariohysterectomy (2.54%). The incidence rate was higher in goat (52.5%) , cattle (36.4%) and in calves (11.1%) .Moreover, the incidence rate was higher in male compared with female. In addition, the incidence rate was higher in summer (36.2%) followed by rainy season (32.01%) and winter season (31.2%). Myiasis and arthritis were the most common cases in summer whereas urolithiasis was more common in winter. However, the study might be helpful to compare the incidence rate of surgical cases in other areas of Bangladesh and take necessary action to minimize the incidence of surgical cases. Key words: surgical diseases, animals, surgery, prevalence, Mirzapur.Item INVESTIGATION ON PERFORMANCE AND CARCASS CHARACTERISTICS OF CROSS-BRED (RIR X FAYOUMI, Ft) COCKERELS AT DIFFERENT AGES(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2014-01) Beg, M. A. H.; Hossain, M. M.The research was conducted to investigate the profitable market age of Cross-bred (RIR X Fayoumi) cockerel reared for meat purpose on semi-scavenging system. One hundred and twenty birds were used in the experiment which was distributed randomly into 4 groups such as AI, A2, A3 and A4 depending on rearing age. Each group contains 10 birds. Data on group AI, A2, A3 and A4 were recorded at the age of 12, 14, 16 and 18 weeks respectively with similar type of ration. The data of the present study showed that average live weight of the birds at 12, 14, 16 and 18 weeks were 738.33g, 919.00g, 1099.33g and 1276.67g respectively and all the treatment groups were significantly different (PO.OS) was found in mortality. The cost benefit ratio (CBR) of A2 (1.14) and A3 (1.14) groups were significantly higher (PO.OS) was found between A2 & A3 and Al & A4 groups. The dressing % and carcass parts of AI, A2, A3 and A4 were statistically non significant (P>O.OS). According to Cost Benefit Analysis, 14 weeks were the best profitable marketing age for sonali cross-bred male chicken, although dressing percent and carcass weight percent of breast, thigh, drumsticks, back, wings and neck was not affected(P>0.05) by different age groups.Item PARAMETERS OF CONDEMNATION OF ORGANS AND CARCASSES IN SLAUGHTERED CATTLE AND GOATS OF COMMERCIAL ABATTOIR IN BANGLADESH(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2011-01) Hossain, M. M.; Islam, M. K.; Rahman, M. A.; Talukder, A. K.; Islam, M.This study identified the common causes of condemnation of slaughtered cattle and goat in a commercial abattoir in Bangladesh. A total of 8,604 cattle and 27,699 goats were slaughtered for the period of July 2007 to June 2008. All the procedures of standard abattoir were followed to get hygienic meat. Ante-mortem examination and postmortem inspection was done with due attention. In cattle liver and lungs are first list organs for condemnation and incidence of affection is 78% in liver and 19.3% in lungs. Fascioliasis is the leading cause of liver condemnation in cattle (75.5%). Hydatidosis affection found both in liver and lungs but the incidence rate is higher in lungs. Abscess is also a disease responsible for organ condemnation particularly in liver (1.4%), lungs (6.1%) and kidneys (I. I%). In goats, a total of 7,278 organs were condemned due to several diseases or conditions namely fascioliasis, hydatidosis, cysticercosis, abscess, pnemonia and tumor. Among them 5,55 I cases were liver (76.3%) and 1,296 cases were lungs (17.8%). Fascioliasis is the leading cause of liver condemnation in goat (94.8%) where pneumonia is for lungs condemnation (69.5%) in goat. However hydatidosis cause both liver (4.6%) and lungs (23.2%) damage at the point of condemnation. Liver, lungs and kidneys abscess are responsible for organ condemnation. Cysticercosis (16.3%), gluteal abscess (15.6%) and grass seed poisoning (6.4%) are also the causal factors of condemnation. The results suggested that the highest incidence of organ condemnation is found in liver and lungs caused by fascioliasis and pnemonia in cattle and goats respectively and grass seed poisoning is the single cause for whole carcass condemnation in goat. The results of the present study concluded that liver and lungs are organs of various affections and mandatory to condemn.Item PERFORMANCE O}<'CAPSULARIS JUTE (Corchorus capsularis) VARIETIES IN RELATION TO SEED YIELD AND DISEASE INCIDENCE GROWN IN LATE SEASON(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-07) Hossain, M. J.An investigation was conducted to find out the performance of deshi jute (Corchorus capsularis L) varieties in late season seed production method and incidence of diseases in late season seed crop. Five varieties of commonly cultivated in Bangladesh were used. They were CVL-I. CVE-3. BJC-2142, BJC7370 and BJC-45. Five fungal diseases viz. stem rot (Macrophomina phaseolinas, black band iBotryodiplodia theobromei, anthracnose (Cotletotrichum corchoris, die back (Gloeosporium sp.) and wilt iRhizoctnia so/ani) were identified in capsularis jute varieties in late season seed crop. Variation among varieties was observed in terms of disease incidence and seed production. The most prevalent disease was stem rot followed by anthracnose and wilt. Disease incidence was lower in varieties eVE-3 and eVL-1 and they gave higher seed yield compared to other varieties. The seed yield was 608.3 kg/ha in eVE-3 and 582.22 kg/ha in CVI.-I.Item PERFORMANCE STUDY OF CROSSBRED DUCK (BEIJING X DESI WHITE DUCK) IN COMPARISON WITH THEIR PARENTS(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2008-07) Khatun, H.; Islam, M. N.; Hossain, M. M.; Faruque, S.The experiment was undertaken to compare the performance of crossbred duck (Beijing x desi white) F, with that of their parents (native Desi white (DW) and Beijing duck). Live weight of Beijing showed highly significant difference at 8 weeks of age compared to white duck but no statistical difference observed at 10 and 12 weeks of age. Dressing yield and breast muscle percent differed significantly at 8 and 12 weeks of age among the genotypes except at 10 week. Abdominal fat percent of F, (0.73) was significantly lower than Beijing (0.88) ducks. The maturity age was 161±9.75, 182± I0.01 and I 54±9.58 days for DW, Beijing and F, ducks, respectively. The average body weight (g) at maturity of Desi white, Beijing and white (F,) ducks were observed to be 1479±25.34, 2530.65±150.30 and 2250.24±35.18g, respectively. The average values for egg weight (g) of DW and F, duck at 40 weeks of age were 55.14 ± 4.50,64.15 ± 3.80, 60.35 ± 6.24, respectively and at 60 weeks of age were 56.27 ± 5.30, 68.00 ± 5.70, 60.34 ± 6.24, respectively. Crossbred ducks produced higher egg than desi and beijing ducks. The average shape index values obtained in DW. beijing and crossbred duck (Beijing x Desi white) were 76.37±. 86 76.20 ± I. 10 and 75.33± 1.17, respectively. The average Breaking Strength values obtained in DW, beijing and crossbred duck were 4.23±. 28, 3.22 ± 0.25 and 2.26 ± ..32, respectively. The average eggshell thickness (mm) values obtained in DW, beijing and crossbred duck were 0.43± I. 7,0.44 ± 4.15 and 0.44±5.17, respectively. The eggshell value was higher in crossbred duck than desi and beijing duck. Haugh unit was 77.49±4.5, 90.21 ± 7.60 and 80.86±6.7 for Desi duck and crossbred duck, respectively. Desi duck is more resistant than other ducks. Mortality rate was found higher in crossbred duck.Item Prevalence and risk factors associated with clinical cases of pet animals in Dhaka city, Bangladesh(Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), 2022-01) Hossain, M. R.; Rahman, A.N.M.I.This study aimed to determine the prevalence of most common clinical cases of dog, cat and rabbit reported at MM Hossain’s Pet Clinic, Dhaka, Bangladesh. One thousand and two hundred (n=1200) clinical cases were recorded during the period from March 2020 to July 2022. Among them, dog, cat, and rabbit covered 21%, 65.5% and 12.5% cases, respectively. Parasitic disease was the highest prevalent case (25%) in dogs followed by gastritis (11.51%), wound (10.71%), dermatitis (7.54%), conjunctivitis (6.75%), and kennel cough (5.16%) (p<0.001). Likewise, parasitic disease followed by wound, viral disease, and diarrhea were the more prevalent clinical cases in cats (23.31%, 18.05%, 6.77%, and 5.64%, respectively) (p<0.001). In case of rabbit, traumatic injuries and fracture was the highest reported case (16.67%) followed by parasitic infestation, diarrhea, and dermatitis (13.33%, 13.33%, and 12.00%, respectively) (p<0.001). Clinical cases were more prevalent in male dogs than female dogs (56.75% vs 43.25%) (p<0.05), and dogs more than 6 months of age had more reported clinical cases compared to 1-6 months of aged dogs (65.08% vs 34.92%) (p<0.05). Local breed of cats showed higher prevalence of clinical cases than that of cross breed (66.54% vs 33.46%), male cats had higher prevalence compared to female cats (59.40% vs 40.60%), and cats at the age of 1-6 months represented higher prevalence than those more than 6 months of age (62.16% vs 37.84%) (p<0.05). Male rabbits represented as higher reported clinical cases than female rabbits (72.67% vs 27.33%) (p<0.05). Overall, Parasitic infection/infestation was the prominent reported clinical cases in pet dogs, cats, and rabbits. Proper prevention and therapeutic management should be carrying out to reduce the prevalence of parasitic diseases of pets.Item RESPONSE OF NITROGEN AND PHOSPHORUS FERTILIZERS EFFICIENCY ON GROWTH AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES OF SOYBEAN (Glycine max L. K.; Yesmin, S.; Zaman, T.A study was conducted to study the response of inorganic fertilizers, nitrogen, and phosphorus on morphophysiological and yield parameter of soybean, the experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) by three replications at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2019. Three levels (0, 25, and 40 kg N ha-1 ) of nitrogen and four levels (0, 18, 36, and 54 kg P ha-1 ) of phosphorus fertilizer used as a treatment for this experiment. Soybean plants responded to the nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizer for the crop growing, and improving yield contributing characters were significantly influenced. Significant effect on plant height, number of branches, seeds plant-1 , number of filled pods plant-1 , the weight of seeds plant-1 , dry weight of the plant, stover weight plant-1 , 1000-seed weight, seeds, and stover yield were observed from the collective application of 25 kg N with 54 kg P ha-1 . Therefore, the combined application of 25 kg nitrogen ha-1 and 54 kg phosphorus ha-1 might have suggested the best possible options to acquire soybean seed yield from a field experiment.Item STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF FEEDS AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF PROBIOTIC (PROTXIN) SUPPLEMENTATION ON PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE OF LAYING HEN(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2007-07) Wadud, M. A.; Alam, M. J.; Beg, M. A. H.; Hossain, M. M.The study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary supplementation of a commercial probiotic (Protexin) on daily feed consumption, egg yield, egg weight, feed conversion, external and internal qualities of egg and livability in layer hens. To achieve the objectives a total of96, 42 weekold layers arranged in four dietary treatment groups including control, containing 8 birds! replication supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% probiotic for a period of 16 weeks. The study reveals that the hen day egg production, feed conversion, egg weight and mass, egg shell weight, egg thickness and egg breaking strength increased linearly with the use of dietary protexin. However, livability and internal egg quality were not altered with the use of dietary protexin. Present study concluded that dietary supplementation of probiotic promote the laying performance and most of the external quality characteristics of eggs. In conclusion, it is recommended that dietary supplementation of probiotic at the rate of 1.5 gm per kg feed in the layer ration may be economically potential.
