Item Bionomics Of Notopterus Notopterus (Pallas, 1769)(University of Rajshahi, 2009) Alam, Mohammad Manjurul; Hossain, M. Altaf; Hussain, Muhammad AfzalThe bionomical study of N notopterus is carried out during January, 2005 to December, 2006. The present research findings are presented in 195 pages including 22 tables, 36 figures and I 3 plates. The relationship model equations among different body length parameters are found highly significant. The growth curve model (GCM) for summer, rainy and winter season is established as TW=0.00771 TL3·045, TW=0.00441TL3·219 and TW=0.00884 TL2998 respectively where in male, female and combined sexes it is established as TW=0.00781TL3·031, TW=0.00844TL3·022 and TW=0.00813TL3·026 respectively and found highly significant to asses the growth variation of the population. The species showed female dominating distribution including homogeneity in yearly distribution. The Fulton's, allometric and relative condition factors showed variation in different season and sex maintaining a similar pattern indicating gradual development of gonad in relation to the sexual cycle. The fish feed on a large variety of food items viz. fish and body parts (16.89%), crustaceans (20.43%), aquatic insects (20.01%), annelids (2.19%), molluscs (1.41 %), debris and mud (16.68%), semidigested mater (11.49%), plant and plant parts (9.60%) and gravel and stones (1.30%). The TL-ACL relationship model equation is established as ACL = 2.065 + 0.326 TL which was positively correlated and statistically significant. The average value of TL-ACL ratio (1 g().43) revealed carnivorous habit of the fish. The gonads are found unpaired having short ducts which originate from the left abdominal cavity beside the alimentary canal and bellow the kidney. The mean length and weight of ripe ovary are found as 4.37 ± SE0.05cm and 16.37 ± SE0.56g respectively. The ova are found larger with a mean diameter of 3.07 ± 0.02mm in ripe stage. The fish is low fecund and the absolute fecundity is ranged from 651 to 2250 with a mean of 1598.18 ± 42.47. The breeding period extend from May to September. No methodical marketing channels are observed for N notopterus; channels that have been observed comprise a few intermediaries (e. g. 'Farias', 'Beparis', 'Aratdars' and Retailers) in between fishermen and the consumers. Benefit of fishermen is correlated with the length of marketing chain. The average retail price is found to vary due to season and marketing costs. The fish is able to breed naturally in stagnant water of carp polyculture system. The sandy-loam soil of the pond, submerged vegetation and suitable water quality enhanced the breeding process though random operational activity of carp polyculture system destroys breeding grounds and hampers parental care. But the findings of two years trial conclude for strong potentiality of natural breeding of N notopterus which may play an important role in production and conservation of the species.Item Effects of Agro Chemicals on Live Fishes(University of Rajshahi, 1995-06) Yasmin, Khaleda; Hossain, M. AltafThe effect of three organophosphorous insecticides, namely, diazinon 60 E.C., nogos 100 E.C. and dimecron 100 SCW on H. fossilis and three species of live A. testudineus, C. batrachus, were studied. The insecticides were in the form of emulsifiable concentrates. In bioassays the or toxicity tests, fishes were exposed to a series of concentrations of chemicals at the laboratory temperature. The dosages were 1.0, 2.25, 3.2, 5.6 and 10.0 ppm. Histopathological effects of these three insecticides on the same species were observed. The dosages were 2.25, 3.50, 5.0. 10.0 and 20.0 ppm respectively. The histopathology of the organs of normal fishes were done to compare them with those of the experimental ones. These insecticides induced certain cellular changes in different organs such as liver intestine, ovary etc. on these fishes. From the bioassay tests and histopathological studies, it was observed that diazinon was most toxic, nogos was moderately toxic and dimecron was least toxic to these fishes among the three insecticides.Item Open Water Fisheries Resources Management in Bogra District(University of Rajshahi, 2014) IQBAL, S.M.; Sultana, Sabina; Mortuza, M. Golam; Hossain, M. AltafIn the present investigation the samples were collected from July 2009 to June 2012 and 124 species 67 genera 29 families 12 orders of fish are recorded. Fishes were collected from 15 fish landing centers out of 87 at Bogra district. All these fish species have economic value, but there are about 57 species under 34 genera are most economic important. The present study has conducted at Bogra District during the July 2009 to June 2012. The fisheries item and open water bodies information were collected with the help of fishermen and related persons. There are 4 main rivers like Januma, Bangali, Korotoa and Ishamoti including the small river flows in the district. Total number of river 8, heels 95, and canals 35 are included open water bodies in this district. Open water bodies area 7,784.38 he. and close water bodies about 11,325 he. and fish production (Close water = 42,117.42 Mt. and open water bodies= 2,083.62 Mt.) 44,201.04 Mt. During the study area period a total of 9 species of Annelids, 17 species of Arthropods, 16 species of Mollusks, 7 species of Amphibians, 17 species of Reptiles, 30 species of Birds, 2 species of Mammals and 48 species of aquatic plants present in the study area. Varieties of crafts and gears are used for fishing purpose. In my present investigation major 12 types of nets, 8 types of traps, 8 types of spears and harpoons, mainly 3 types of line and 5 types crafts are found in the study area. The culturable and non·culturable fish species were listed. The total production of each upazilla was determined. Total 129 species 66 genera 29 families 12 orders of fish are recorded. All these fish species have economic value, but there are about 57 species under 34 genera are most economic important. The fisherman or producer is the first basic person of the marketing system. During the peak fishing season the commodity is sold to the farias and beparies. Farias again may sell the fishes at nearby markets or hand over it to the beparies. Beparies are the third basic person of the marketing channel. The total numbers of hat/bazaar are 186 (Daily Bazar 77 and weakly Hat 109). There are about 87 fish landing centers in the study area. In the study period it was found that 37 species of various groups of fishes from 4 important surveyed FLC's of Bogra district, Exotic carps, Major carps, Cat fish, Live fish, SIS and Others various fishes have been discussed about their monthly landing and wholesale price in details For the present study a total of fishermen were interviewed. Analysis of age structure show that the highest 26% of fishermen was of 20-30 age groups. On the other hand the lowest 2.33% comprised of fishermen Under 20 years of age. The educational status of the fishermen is not satisfactory. About 43.67% fishermen are illiterate. 5% fishermen have SSC pass. About 20.66% fishermen have primary education. 30.67% fishermen know just how to read or write. The highest percent (28.33%) of fishermen invest their capital from 10000-15000 Tk. and the lowest percent (2.33%) of investment are 2000-4000 Tk. Other group and percentages are 5.34% fishermen invest Tk. 4001-6000, 15.67% fishermen invest 6001-8000 Tk. 25.33% fishermen invest 8001-10000 Tk. and 15.33% fishermen invest 15000-20000 Tk.Item Reproductive biology and fishery of ailia coila (hamilton-buchanan) (siluriformes: schilbeidae)(University of Rajshahi, 1999) Alam, Md. Rabiul; Hossain, M. AltafFish and fisheries play a vital role in the economy of our nation. Bangladesh is endowed with unique aquatic resources for fisheries development. Though Bangladesh is a small country of only 147, 570 square kilometers, it contains an abundance of rivers, streams, canals, ponds, tanks and ditches. Bangladesh is the richest country in the world in terms of water resources. The Rajshahi Division in the Northwest Region (NWR) of the country covers an area of about 3.5 million hectares and accounts for about 25% of Bangladesh's land area. The population of this region is about one fourth of the total population of Bangladesh. The people of this area suffers more from malnutrition than those in other parts of the country. The per capita protein intake in Bangladesh is about 50 g/day of which only 7-8 g comes from animal protein (Haque, 1982). To raise the animal protein production for human consumption we need to increase the production of fish, poultry and cattle. In Bangladesh fish play a vital role in meeting the requirements for protein. One of the most complex problems facing the world today is the capacity of the environment to support human life. Bangladesh, as a nation, is faced not just with the problem of sufficient food production but also with the quality food production to improve the general health of the rapidly increasing population. Blessed with innumerable bodies of freshwater, the nation has the potentiality to become self sufficient in the production of protein food of superior quality- the fish. Bangladesh is rich in fish wealth, which is the second staple food of the people. It is not only a food product but also a cash product, as a good amount of foreign money is earned by exporting fish. Thus fish plays an important role in the economy and dietary habits of the people. Development of fisheries means the development of the country. Millions of landless people are engaged in fishing, fish processing, marketing, transportation, preservation, fish by products and other aspects of the fish industry. The people of our country are fond of fish and it is an established fact that fish has been the most preferred and major source of animal protein in the diet of the people of our country. Production of fish from inland waters in Bangladesh has declined. substantially. Consequently to the decline in fish production from inland waters and increase in population fish consumption per capita per day has droped from 33 g. The per day fish consumption per capita was 21 g in 1963- 1964, which decreased to 12 g in 1985. As a result animal protein is very low in daily diet of our rural people, which is among the lowest in the world. However, the large fishes are preferred more, though the catch deficit is being supplemented by the small fishes, which are more nutritious than the large fishes. The total protein intake in Bangladesh per capita per day is about 57 g of which 7.8 g are of animal origin as reported by nutrition survey 1963- 1964. Out of which 6.38 g i.e. about 80 percent come from fish alone (Rabbani and Hussain, 1970; Mannan, 1977; Ali, 1982). Fish diet mainly provides proteins, fats, vitamin A and D, and phosphorus. According to FAO-report 1991, fish contains 72% water, 19% protein, 8% fat, 0.5% calcium, 0.25% phosphorus and 0.1% vitamin A, D, B and C. The institute of Nutrition and Food Science (INFS) of Dhaka University has recommended that to arrest any further decline in the nutritional level of food of the people, an increase in the consumption of fish as 33.6 g/person/ day would be desirable. In this context, it would be well to examine how the recommended rate of the INFS will meet. A study made by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (1985) indicates that inland fisheries contribute as much as 30.52 percent to the overall fish Production of the country. It has been shown that the proportion of the contribution of the capture (open water) and culture (closed water) fisheries to inland fisheries stand at 95 percent and 5 percent respectively. On the other hand, among the total capture fisheries 22.9 percent contribution was made by the small indigenous fish species (Nabi, 1987). Recently we are getting fish 36% from culture water and 64% from open water. In the 1930s and 1940s, capture fisheries contributed more than 90% of the total fishery resources while culture fisheries contributed 10% or less. Since then there has been a sharp decline in the capture fisheries and a gradual increase in culture based fisheries. The indiscriminate use of insecticides has drastically affected the fish population. With the increase in human population and their high demand for fish and other aquatic resources came the necessity for an increased production of fish. So we should concentrate our attention on better production of fish and fishery resources. The small indigenous fish species, thus make a very significant contribution to the fisheries of Bangladesh. In Bangladesh about 80 percent population is poor and they mainly depend on small size fish for their daily supply of animal protein (Siddique, 1985). Another advantage of small size fish is that they could easily breed and grow in a water bodies, where culture of the other major fishes are impossible. Bangladesh, being an agriculture country and rich in fishery, a number of potential water bodies remain neglected even up to these days. Only by proper culture of these fishery resources the country can overcome the problem of protein deficiency. In realizing this condition several research programs are being organized on different indigenous species by different research institutions of the country. The present thesis is a step in the direction of an effort to amass of information as much as possible on one of the hither to less known species Ailia coila (Hamilton-Buchanan). The freshwater A. coila a member of cat fish family is excellent as food and a rich source of protein in the common people. It is caught largely from the river Padma. A. coila carries its local name as Kajuli, Baspata (Rahman, 1989). This genus is represented by two species such as A. coila and A. punctata.Item Studies on The Optimum Population Density of Carps Fry In Nursery Ponds(1990) Afroze., Shelina; Hossain, M. AltafThe present work is on the optimum population density of three major carps fry viz. Labeo rohita,Catla catla and Cirrhina rigal in nursery ponds and tanks. A comperative study has been carried out on the growth rate of the fish fry on an exact time after releasing them in different nursery ponds and tanks at different ratios. Chapter I: Growth effeC!-l.-2rative study on Ehic.2..= chemical factor and morphometric relati,£!:!sh1J22!ith different density. The total length/standard length and total length/ body depth relationships hae been calculated in the linear regression equation for the three species of carp fry reared in tanks and ponds for initial and final measurements. It may be observed that SL and ED always depend upon TL ofthe species and positively correlated and the values were significant in all the cases. ------
