A COMPARATIVE STUDY ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF SOME ELITE HYBRID RICE VARIETIES IN DRY SEASON
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2013-01) Hossain, M. T.; Parvin, K.; Sultana, T.; Hoque, M. A.
The experiment was conducted at the research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, during the dry season (November, 2012 to June, 2013) to evaluate leaf area development, dry matter accumulation pattern and yield of some popular hybrid rice varieties. The experiment comprised of three hybrid varieties (Hira 2, Aloron and Tia) and an inbred variety BRRI dhan 29 with four dates of transplanting (01 January, 16 January, 31 January and 15 February). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Leaf area development, total dry matter production, absolute growth rate, yield and yield contributing characters were significantly influenced by the date of transplanting. Leaf area, total dry matter, absolute growth rate were found higher in early transplanted plots. The highest grain yield (6.07 t ha') was recorded from plots transplanted on 16 January due to increased panicles hi\l"' and grains paniclel.Hira 2 exhibited best result on leaf area (LA), absolute growth rate and total dry matter (TDM) production compared to all other studied varieties and thus recorded with highest grain yield (6.40 t ha"). No difference on grain yield was achieved from Hira2 at oI to 16 January transplanting

COMPARISON OF FORCE BASED DESIGN AND DISPLACEMENT BASED DESIGN METHODS FOR SEISMIC RESPONSE OF MULTISPAN BRIDGES
    (Dept. of CE, CUET, 19-Dec-2018) Hoque, M. A.; Mukhlis, M. R.; Bhuiyan, M. A. R.
Multispan bridges are very common structures in transportation system. Generally, all the bridges are designed using force-based design (FBD) method. Though displacement correlates damage better than strength does, FBD assumes damage in the structure is controlled by the provision of strength and uses displacement as the final check to determine the structural performance. Although current FBD method is considerably improved, there are some fundamental problems in its procedure. Displacement-based design (DBD) methods have been developed overcoming deficiency associated with FBD method. In this study, two DBD methods, direct displacement-based design (DDBD) and alternative displacement-based design (ADBD), have been compared with FBD method for the seismic response of multispan bridges. Two different configurations of bridge models are considered here to compare their seismic response. Base shear and displacement are taken as primary seismic response parameter for this study. From the numerical evaluation it can be concluded that, DBD methods have shown better performance in calculating seismic responses than FBD method. Base shear calculated by DDBD and ADBD methods are less than that calculated by FBD method, whereas displacement estimated by DDBD and ADBD methods are more than that estimated by FBD method.

N VITRO ORGANOGENESIS AND PLANT REGEN ERATION IN BRASSICA SPECIES
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2014-01) Hossain, D.; Rahman, M. S.; Ahamed, F.; Datta, A. K.; Hoque, M. A.
High frequency regeneration of plants from in vitro cultured tissues is perqursite to use genetic transformation to enrich oleiferous Brassica spp. Emphasis was given in this study on callus induction aptitude and subsequent plant regeneration from cotyledon and stem segment of three of Brassica spp. viz BARI sarisa-8 (Brassica napus), Daulat (Brassica juncea) and Sonali iBrassica campestriss. Two milligram per litre of Kn, BAP (1.0, 2.0, 3.0 mg/I) and constant concentration of NAA (0.5 mg/l) were used in MS medium. The result showed that stem segment produced maximum percentage of callus and subsequent shoot regeneration in all the four treatments BARI sarisa -8 Showed best performance in callus induction and it take minimum (6-7 days) for callus initiation. Shoot initiation potentiality also highest in the same variety under studied. The variety sonali showed poor performance for all the parameter under studied. Rooting occurred simultaneously from regenerated shoot on half strength MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mgll iliA. Regenerated plantlets were successfully transferred to pots containing a mixer of soil and vermiculite.
