    A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS ON PERFORMANCE OF HYBRID AND INBRED RICE IN BORO SEASON

    With a view to compare the performance of hybrid and inbred rice, a field experiment was conducted at the research farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur during Bora season, 2008- 2009. Two rice varieties (hybrid Heera2 and inbred BRRI dhan45) and six planting dates (30 December, 15 January, 30 January, 15 February, 0 I March and 16 March) were selected. The experiment was laid out in split-plot design (RCBD) with four replications, placing variety at mainplot and planting date at sub-plot. Heera2 produced tillers rapidly at vegetative phase but the tillers retention capacity was lower at post-flowering stage compared to BRRI dhan45, regardless of planting dates. Tillers production reduced gradually with delayed planting in both varieties. Heera2 exhibited significantly higher plant height and higher !lag leaf photosynthetic rate at flowering over BRRI dhan45. Different planting dates did not exert considerable effect on flag leaf photosynthetic rate at !lowering. Heera2 was out yielded BRRI dhan45 in early planting (30 December and 15 January). At delayed planting, grain filling (%) declined rapidly in Heera2 in comparison to BRRldhan45. Grain yield decreased @ 36.55 kg ha·1day·1and 68.74 kg ha·1day·1 in Heera2 and BRRI dhan45, respectively after 30 December planting. This result suggests that hybrid Heera2 is suitable only for early Bora season.

    CHANGES OF PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF POST HARVEST SOIL OF T. AMAN RICE AS INFLUENCED BY ORGANIC AND INORGANIC PHOSPHORUS

    Due to low organic mailer content the agricultural soils of Bangladesh has poor physical and chemical condition. Moreover, the continuous use of phosphorus (P) fertilizers build-up of excessive P in many cultivated soils has created an interest in the combined use of organic and inorganic P fertilizer. Hence, a field experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University Farm, Gazipur, Bangladesh during the Aman season of July 2008 to January 2009 to investigate the effects of combined application of inorganic phosphorus (Pi) and organic phosphorus (1),,)on the changes of physical and chemical properties of soil after T. Aman cultivation. The eight treatments were To, Control/ no fertilizers; T" recommended dose offertilizers; Tz, 50% P through TSP and 50% P through cowdung; T), 75% P through TSP and 25% P through cowdung; T" 50% P through TSP and 50% P through poultry manure; Ts, 75% P through TSP and 25% P through poultry manure; To, 50% P through TSP and 50% P through household wastes; T1, 75% P through TSP and 25% P through household wastes. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) and replicated thrice. The physical and chemical properties of the soils were influenced directly by the above mentioned treatments. The physical properties of soil such as particle density and bulk density at different soil depth and plough pan decreased in response to addition of organic matters whereas no significant changes were found in response to inorganic P. The rate of improvement of chemical properties such as organic carbon (OC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), total nitrogen, available Phosphorus (P), exchangeable potassium (K), available sulphur(S), exchangeable calcium (Ca), exchangeable magnesium (Mg) and exchangeable sodium (Na) was higher with inorganic plus organic amendment than to inorganic alone. In addition, soil pH decreased in all treatments. Based on the above results it is suggested that the combined use of inorganic and organic P significantly improve physical and chemical properties of post harvest T. Aman soil.

    Convective flow of nanofluid along a permeable stretching/shrinking wedge with second order slip using Buongiorno’s mathematical model

    In this paper we have studied an unsteady two-dimensional laminar forced convective hydrodynamic heat and mass transfer flow of nanofluid along a permeable stretching/shrinking wedge with second order slip velocity using Buongiorno’s mathematical model. Using appropriate similarity transformations, the governing non-linear partial differential equations are reduced to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations which are then solved numerically using the function bvp4c from MATLAB for different values of the parameters. Numerical results for the nondimensional velocity, temperature and nanoparticle volume fraction profiles as well as local skin-friction coefficient, local Nusselt number and local Sherwood number for different material parameters such as wedge angle parameter, unsteadiness parameter, Lewis number, suction parameter, Brownian motion parameter, thermophoresis parameter, slip parameter and Biot number are displayed in graphically as well as tabular form and discussed them from the physical point of view. The obtained numerical results clearly indicate that the flow field is influenced significantly by the second order slip parameter as well as surface convection parameter.

    EFFECT OF DIFFERENT REDUCING LIGHT INTENSITIES ON THE MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGY AND YIELD OF CUCUMBER

    An investigation was made to study the morpho-physiological changes and yield performance of cucumber (variety Baromashi) under different light intensities (100, 7S, SO and 2S% PAR). Main stem length, internode length and individual leaf area were increased, but main stem diameter, leaf number per plant and specific leaf weight were decreased significantly under reduced light intensities. Leaf chlorophyll and leaf nitrogen content increased but leaf ~carotene content decreased markedly with the reduction of light. Chlorophyll alb ratio started to decrease when light was lowered to SO% PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) because of the less increase of chlorophyll "a" compare to chlorophyll "b". The highest fruit number per plant (21.83) and the heaviest individual fruit (267.3 g) were recorded at 7S% PAR level. Compare to full sunlight, reduction of PAR at 2S% resulted in significantly lower fruit number per plant (6.67) and the individual fruit weight (199.3 g). The highest fruit yield was obtained at 7S% PAR level (16.09 t/ha), followed by SO% PAR level (11.73 tlha), 100% PAR level (11.28 t/ha) and 2S% level (4.S7 t/ha). Under reduced light intensities shade tolerant parameters, namely leaf number per plant, individual leaf area and leaf chlorophyll content exerted positive effect on the yield of cucumber. Consequently fruit yield did not decrease significantly up to SO'Y<,reduction of PAR level. Beyond 73.08% PAR level, fruit yield decreased at the rate of 0.0048 t/ha.

    EFFECT OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC PHOSPHORUS ON THE YIELD AND NUTRIENT USE EFFICIENCY OF T. AMAN RICE

    A field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of combined use of organic and inorganic phosphorus (P) sources on yield contributing characters, yield and nutrient use et1iciency of T. Aman rice. Eight treatments including a control, a recommended doses of inorganic fertilizers and six other treatments which were combinations of inorganic and organic fertilizers where 50 % and 75 % of recommended doses of P were provided by using triple super phosphate (TSP) and the remaining 50 % and 25 % of P were amended by using either cowdung (CD), poultry manure (PM) or household waste (HW). The nutrient P as per treatments and nitrogen (N), potassium (K) and zinc (Zn) as per recommended dose were applied. Combined application of inorganic and organic sources of P significantly increased the yield and yield contributing characters ofT. Aman. The effect of PM was prominent than that of CD and HW. The treatment T. receiving 50 % P through TSP and 50 % P through PM produced the highest grain yield of T. Aman rice (4.34 tlha) and also showed the highest % recovery efficiencies (RE), agronomic et1iciencies (AE) kg/kg, physiological efficiencies(PE) kg/kg and internal efficiencies (IE) kg/kg of nitrogen(N) but failed to increase the physiological efficiencies(PE) kg/kg and internal efficiencies (IE) kg/kg of phosphorus(P).Thus, the present study indicated that the use of both organic and inorganic source of P is an effective way to enhance the yield and increase the nutrient use et1iciency (NUE) for T. Aman rice.

    INFLUENCE OF PLANT POPULATION AND WEED MANAGEMENT PERIODS ON CROP-WEED COMPETITION OF GROUNDNUT

    Population density and weed competition in crops constitute the main limiting factors for groundnut crop yields in Bangladesh. An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during April to August, 2008 to investigate the optimum population density and the most appropriate weeding period of groundnut. Two plant population viz. i) 200,000 (D,) and ii) 400,000 plants ha·1 (D2) and seven weed competition periods viz. i) No weed competition (Well), ii) weed competition for the first 25 DAS and thereafter weed tree (we I), iii) weed competition for the first 40 DAS and thereafter weed free (We2), iv) weed competition for the tirst 55 DAS and thereafter weed tree (We), v) weed competition tor the first 70 DAS and thereafter weed tree (WC4), vi) weed competition for the first 85 DAS and thereafter weed tree (Wes) and vii) weed competition up to harvesting (WC.) were studied. It was evident from the result that yield and yield contributing all characters except number of primary branches, total pods and mature pods, were increased at a plant density of 400000 plants ha·'. Weed competition period for the first 40 DAS and thereafter weed free up to crop harvest emerged out positive responses on yield and yield contributing characters.

    MORPHO-PHYSIOLOGICAL CHANGES AND YIELD PERFORMANCE OF YARD LONG BEAN UNDER REDUCED LIGHT LEVELS

    An intensive investigation was conducted to study the morpho-physiological changes and yield performance of yard long bean under different light levels (100, 75, 50 and 25%). Main stem length, internode length and individual leaf area were increased but main stem diameter, leaves plant" and SLW decreased significantly under reduced light intensity. Leaf chlorophyll and leaf nitrogen content were increased but leaf p-carotene content decreased markedly under reduced light levels. Chlorophyll a : b ratio significantly decreased when light intensity was lower to 50% because of the less increase of chlorophyll a compared to chlorophyll b. The highest number of fruits plant" (255.2) and the maximum individual fruit weight (15.78 g) were recorded at 75% light level. Significantly the lower fruits plant" (138.7) and individual fruit weight (11.98 g) were achieved from 25% light level. The highest fruit yield was obtained at 75% light level (12.91 t ha") was followed by 100% light level (12.16 t ha'), 50% light level (10.21 t ha") and then by 25% light level (5.73 t ha'). Under reduced light level shade tolerant parameters viz. leaves plant", individual leaf area and leaf chlorophyll content exerted positive effect on the yield of yard long bean. Consequently fruit yield did not decrease significantly up to 50% reduction of light intensities.

    Scattering of Electron and Positron by Hcn: A Theoretical Investigation

    "A theoretical investigation of differential, integrated elastic, inelastic, transport (momentum transfer & viscosity), grand total (elastic+inelastic) and total ionisation cross-sections along with the Sherman functions for the scattering of electron and positron by hydrogen cyanide (HCN) in the energy range 1eV−1 MeV are presented in this report. We perform calculations using the single scattering independent atom model (IAM) and IAM with screening correction (IAMS). The scattering observables are calculated using a complex optical model potential in the framework of the Dirac partial wave analysis (DPWA). The inclusion of screening correction to the IAM appreciably improves the cross-sections, especially at low-impact energies. Our calculated results are compared with the available experimental and theoretical works found in the literature. Our present computational data agree well with prior results."

    Unsteady MHD free convective heat transfer flow along a vertical porous flat plate with internal heat generation

    In this study, a similarity analysis is made for an unsteady two-dimensional MHD free convective and heat transfer flow of a viscous incompressible fluid along a vertical flat plate with internal heat generation/absorption. The governing time-dependent boundary-layer equations are reduced to non-linear ordinary differential equations by introducing a similarity transformation. The obtained similarity equation for both steady and unsteady cases have been compared with previously published work and excellent agreement is found. The resulting local similarity equations for the unsteady flow have been solved numerically by applying Nachtsheim-Swigert shooting iteration technique along with sixth order Runge-Kutta integration scheme. Numerical results for the dimensionless velocity and temperature profiles as well as the local skin-friction coefficient and local Nusselt number are displayed both by graphically and numerically for different values of the physical parameters entering into the problem.The significance of the physical parameters on the flow field is discussed in detail.The results shows that the velocity profile and the temperature profile is much pronounced with the increasing value of heat generation and unsteadiness parameter but the opposite effect can be found for suction parameter and Prandlt number. Also, the result shows that the values of skin-friction and wall heat transfer are strongly influenced by unstediness and heat generation parameter.
