    ADOPTION OF MODERN PRACTICES IN RICE CULTIVATION BY THE FARMERS OF MADHUKHALI UPAZILA UNDER FARIDPUR DISTRICT

    The purpose of this study was to determine the adoption of modern practices by the farmers for rice cultivation and to explore the contribution of the selected characteristics of the farmers to their adoption of modern practices by the farmers for rice cultivation. The selected characteristics were age, education, farm size, family size, annual family income, organizational participation, innovativeness, extension contact, training exposure and rice production knowledge. Data were gathered from 107 farmers of two villages namely Noapara and Kuraniarchor of Modhukhali upazila under Faridpur district by using a pre evaluated interview schedule during the period from 15 March to 30 June, 2015. Descriptive analysis, stepwise multiple regression were used for data analysis. More than half of the respondents (56.1%) had medium adoption where 15.9 percent had low adoption and only 24.3 percent had high adoption of modern practices for rice cultivation. There was 3.7 percent respondents were in no adoption of selected modern practices for rice cultivation. Among the influential variables respondents’ education, extension contact, age were significant contributor and provided 47.0 percent contribution on modern practices for rice cultivation.

    DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF AUTOMATIC STAR-DELTA STARTER

    The star delta starter of induction motor is designed to reduce high starting current and torque. The star delta starter is designed by three magneticcontactors, an overload relay, timer relay and circuit breaker. For Starter, a motor must be connected in delta mode position during a normal run. When induction motor is start in direct online .The motor winding flow a large amount of current .The starting high currentcan be reached in 8-10 times of the rated. So there is need to control high starting current before starting the motorTherefore, in a star connected system line current is equal to phase current but line voltage is equal to the root three times of phase voltage. For this reasons at first motor is connected to the star system and it reduce the high starting current. In delta connection, line voltage is equal to phase voltage and line current is equal to √3 times phase current.In run mode the motor connect in delta system so that the full voltage applied to the motor. The Starter is made by three magnetic contactors, timer relay, and a thermal overload relay or circuit breaker.

    GENETIC VARIABILITY AND DIVERSITY STUDIES IN MAIZE (Zea mays L.) INBRED LINES

    Thirty inbred lines of maize were evaluated for ten parameters at the experimental field of Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, Bangladesh during November 2016-April 2017 to study the genetic variability and diversity in maize inbred lines. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. Mean performance, variability, heritability, coefficient of variation and diversity analysis of yield and yield contributing characters namely Cob height, plant height, cob length, cob diameter, number of kernel rows per cob, number of kernels per row, number of kernels per cob, 1000 kernels weight, yield per plant and pith weight were performed. The highest weight of 1000 kernels (494.3g) was obtained from ML28, the lowest weight of 1000 kernels (213.96g) was recorded from ML21, 1000 kernels weight of phenotypic variation (82.24) was higher than the genotypic variation (18.65) which indicates high environmental effect was supported by narrow difference between phenotypic (23.64) and genotypic (5.36) co-efficient of difference. Weight of 1000 kernels had inherent potential among the genotype high heritability (68.83) for this trait along with high genetic advance in percentage of mean (33.51). All the genotypes were grouped into four clusters. Cluster II was the largest cluster comprising of sixteen maize genotypes followed by cluster I (9) and III (4). Cluster distance denotes by the average inter and intra cluster distance are the approximate measure of the cluster divergence. The maximum (8.34) inter-cluster divergence was observed between the clusters II and IV and it was minimum (3.94) between clusters I and III. The maximum value of inter –cluster distances indicated that the genotypes belonging to the cluster II is far diverged from those cluster IV. Genotypes of cluster II show high intra cluster distance indicating high degree of divergence among the genotypes and also mean performance of genotypes of cluster II show higher result in case of plant height and yield per plant. High degree of performances like plant height, thousand kernel weight and yield per plant with diversified genotypes of cluster II are suitable for selection as parents for future hybridization program.

    THE EFFECT OF VARIETY AND INSECTICIDE AGAINST BEAN POD BORER (MARUCA VITRATA) ONSUMMER COUNTRY BEAN

    The experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of different varieties and management practices in controlling bean pod borerof country bean during the period from April to October, 2014. The experiment consists of the bean varieties as the IPSA Seem-1, IPSA Seem-2, BARI Seem 7, and insecticides Voliam Flexi 300 SC, Sumi Alfa 5 EC,Neem seed karnel as the treatments. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The minimum infestation percentage (11.71 %) and maximum yield (17.61 t/ha) was obtained from BARI Seem 7 while variety and the maximum infestation (14.86 %) and minimum yield (12.90 t/ha) was obtained from IPSA Seem-1 variety. The minimum infestation (12.24 %) and maximum yield (15.77 t/ha) was obtained while sprayed Voliam Flexi 300 SC treatment and the maximum infestation (14.56 %) and minimum yield (14.42 t/ha) was obtained from the control treatment. In case of combined effect the minimum infestation (9.52 %) and maximum yield (19.20 t/ha) was obtained from combination of BARI Seem 7 and Voliam Flexi 300 SCand the maximum infestation (22.02 %) and minimum yield (10.70 t/ha) was obtained from IPSA Seem-1 and control treatment combination. The relationship between percent pod infestation by number and yield (t/ha) is negatively corelated. From the study it may be concluded that BARI Seem 7 treated with Voliam Flexi 300 SC performed the best results
