    INFLUENCE OF NITROGEN AND ZINC ON GROWTH, YIELD AND NUTRIENTS CONTENT OF BRRI dhan33

    An experiment was conducted at the experimental held of' the Department of Agronomy in Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during T. oman season in 2012. The study was to find out the effect of nitrogen (N) and zinc (Zn) application on growth. yield and nutrient content of BRR1 dhan33. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Five nitrogen levels viz. 0 (control). 75, 100, 125 and 150 kg N ha" were applied where urea was used as nitrogen source. On the other hand two levels of' zinc i.e. 0 (control) and 2.5 kg ha" Zn were applied as ZnSO4.71-120. From the result it was observed that all the growth and yield components significantly increased with nitrogen and zinc application. Eff'ect of' nitrogen levels showed a significant variation on plant height, total tiller production, panicle length, number of' filled grain panicie anc i uuv grain-veigm. Among inc ciitrerent nitrogen teveis me highest grain yield 5.07 t ha" was obtained from the application of 100 kg N ha''. On the other hand zinc application iiE 2.5 kg ha" gave a significant variation regarding growth characteristics and yield contributing characteristics hence result higher yield (4.63 t ha''), was obtained. From the combined effect it was found that the highest grain yield (5.57 t ha'') was obtained from the combined application of 125 kg N ha" and 2.5 kg Zn ha". Among different combinations. 125 kg N ha" along with 2.5 kg Zn ha' scored the highest nitrogen content (1.84%) in grain. A significant variation was observed on nitrogen and potassium content in straw due to the combined elièct of' nitrogen and zinc but there was no significant eiftct on phosphorus and sulphur content.

    INFLUENCE OF SEEDLING AGE AND NUMBER OF SEEDLINGS PER HILL ON THE PERFORMANCE OF BLACK RICE (Oryza sativa L.)

    The experiment was conducted at the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh, from June 2021 to December 2021 to study the growth and yield of black rice (Oryza sativa L. indica) as affected by seedling age and seedling rate (no. of seedlings hill -1 ). Black rice was used as the test crop for this experiment. The experiment comprised two factors. Factor A: Seedling age (4 levels); 25 days old seedling, 30 days old seedling, 35 days old seedling, and 40 days old seedling, and Factor B: Seedling rate (no. of seedlings hill -1 ) (3 levels): 1 seedling hill -1 ; 2 seedling hill -1 and 3 seedling hill -1 . The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Due to the combination effect of seedling age and seedling rate, the maximum number of effective tillers hill -1 (14.00) was found in the treatment combination of 35 days old seedlings transplanted in 2 seedlings hill -1 and the minimum number (2.00) in 25 days seedling age with 3 seedlings hill -1 . The longest plant height (184.87 cm) was found in the treatment combination D 4 S 1 (40 days old seedling and 1 seedling hill -1 ), whereas the shortest plant (161.60 cm) was found in the treatment combination D 1 S 3 (25 days old seedling with 3 seedlings hill -1 ). The maximum number of filled grains panicle -1 (353.2) was found in the treatment combination of D 3 S 2 (35 days old seedling and 2 seedlings hill ), and the minimum number (270.73) was found in D 1 1 ). The highest grain yield (5.56 t ha -1 S 3 -1 (25 days old seedling and 3 seedlings hill ) was found in the treatment combination of D 3 (35 days old seedling and 2 seedlings hill -1 ), and the lowest grain yield (2.87 t ha ) was observed from D 1 S 1 (25 days old seedling and 1 seedling hill -1 ), but the highest straw yield (5.69 t ha -1 ) was found in the treatment combination of D 3 S 2 (35 days old seedling and 2 seedlings hill -1 ), and the lowest straw yield (3.66 t ha -1 ) was observed in the treatment combination of D 1 S 3 (25 days old seedling and 3 seedlings hill -1 ). The 35 days old seedlings planted in 2 seedlings hill -1 showed a better response in most of the studied parameters.

    MODIFIED CROP STRAW DERIVED BIOCHAR INCORPORATION IMPACT ON MAIZE PLANT GROWTH AND PHOSPHORUS AVAILABILITY IN LOW-FERTILITY SOIL

    Phosphorus (P) is an important plant nutritional element, but its supply is limited since it is a nonrenewable resource. The objective of this study was to investigate the maize plant growth and soil available phosphorus status in modified rice straw biochar in lowfertility soils of northern Bangladesh. To fulfill the objectives of the research a 40days pot experiment was established with the following treatments: a) control (without biochar+KH2PO4,), b) fresh rice straw biochar2%+KH2PO4, c) H2O2+2% fresh rice straw biochar+KH2PO4, d) H2SO4+2% fresh rice straw biochar+KH2PO4 and e) HNO3+2% fresh rice straw biochar+KH2PO4 and replicated three times in a completely randomized design (CRD). The results indicated that incorporation of hydrogen per oxide modified rice straw biochar increased the pH value (5.85) of the soil significantly. On the other hand, soil available P value (95.42 ppm) also increased due to application of nitric acid modified rice straw biochar. Plants dry weight value (4.44gm pot-1) also increased due to application of nitric acid modified biochar. The P availability increased due to changing of soil properties like pH, OM, CEC, base cations (Ca, Mg, K and Na) after incorporation of acid modified biochar. The maize plant growth was higher yield in nitric acid modified rice straw biochar than the other treatments. Therefore, it may be suggested to consider nitric acid modified rice straw biochar application for enhancing soil health as well as obtaining higher yield of crop.

    PROFITABILITY ANALYSIS OF DATE PALM MOLASSES COMMERCIALIZATION IN SELECTED PLACES OF JASHORE, BANGLADESH

    The objectives of this paper were to explore socio-economic profile and measure profitability analysis of date palm molasses producing households. Primary data collection was carried out at three upazila of Jashore district along with fifteen key queries. This research was based on field data purveyed from 75 households following purposive sampling technique. Cobb-Douglas production function was applied to determine the effects of premediated cost factors on molasses commercialization. Tapping tree contract, earthen sap pot, labor wage, firewood and marketing cost factors had significant impact on molasses turnover. Large scale production (BCR 2.21) was explored more profitable than marginal scale (BCR 1.88). The average market prices were attained BDT 232.93/kg (large scale) and BDT 219.90/kg (marginal scale). Almost 98% respondents privileged with nutritious food intake and had over 80% significant impact on livelihood and societal security. Finally, some perplexities were distinguished including adultrated molasses presence in market, lack of efficient artisans, theft plausibility and quality date palm saps shortage along with compatible suggestions to reincarnate such signature.
