    EFFECTS OF SALINITY ON GROWTH, YIELD AND NUTRIENTS CONTENT OF TWO ONION CULTIVERS

    A pot experiment was conducted at the net house of Agro-Environmental Chemistry Laboratory, Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207 from November, 2020 to April, 2021 to observe the effects of salinity on growth, yield, and nutrient content of two onion cultivars. The experiment was conducted using two varieties (BARI Piaz-1 and BARI Piaz-6) and five salinity levels (0, 3, 6, 9 and 12 dSm -1 ). The experiment was set in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) having two factors with three replications. Results of the experiment showed that plant height, number of leaves per plant, length of leaf, fresh weight of leaf per plant, length of bulb, diameter of bulb, individual bulb weight of onion were influenced by varieties. The tallest plant (40.90 cm) was found in BARI Piaz-1 that statistically not significant. BARI Piaz-6 achieved the maximum length of leaf (34.65 cm), number of leaves per plant (5.39), fresh weight of leaf per plant (1.73 g), length of bulb (30.33 mm). Among the two cultivars, the higher individual bulb weight (30.56 g) was found in BARI Piaz-6. Among different salinity levels the maximum plant height (43.99 cm), length of leaf (37.29 cm), fresh weight of leaf per plant (2.07 g), length of bulb (30.33 mm), diameter of bulb (31.5 cm) of onion was obtained at 0 dSm . The highest individual bulb weight (34.26 g) was also recorded at control treatment. Among the combined effects of varieties and salinity levels, individual bulb weight (36.70 g) was found in BARI Piaz-6 with 0 dSm -1 level and at 3, 6, 9 and 12 dSm salinity levels BARI Piaz-6 should better result than BARI Piaz-1. Among the two varieties, K content was maximum in BARI Piaz-6 than BARI Piaz-1. In both varieties K content decreased significantly with the increasing salinity level. Na content was higher in BARI Piaz-1 than BARI Piaz-6. In both varieties it increased significantly with the increasing salinity level. N content was higher in BARI Piaz6 than BARI Piaz-1. P and S content was higher in BARI Piaz-1 than BARI Piaz-6. The cultivar BARI Piaz-6 had better expression of morphological, yield and yield contributing characters than those of BARI Piaz-1 under salinity stress.

    GERMINATION, SEEDLING GROWTH AND WATER RELATION BEHAVIOR OF WHEAT GENOTYPES AS AFFECTED BY SALT STRESS

    For Screeningsalt tolerance of wheat genotypes through germination and seedling growth characters were used as screening test criteria against salt stress. Wheat genotypes (33) were tested under 5 different salt concentrations (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 dSm -1 ) at central laboratory, Sher-eBangla Agricultural University, Dhaka-1207, during February to March, 2016. The experiment was conducted in a complete randomize design (CRD) with 5 replications. The results of the experiment revealed that, germination and seedling growth parameters of wheat genotypes varied significantly under salt stress. A marked reduction on germination rate, shoot and root length, shoot and root dry weight, relative water content, water retention capacity and vigour indexwere observed with increasing of salt concentration for most of the wheat genotypes except ESWYT-5, ESWYT-6 and BARI GOM 28. ESWYT-5, ESWYT-6 and BARI GOM 28 showed consistently better performance against salt stress and there were a slow linear reduction observed with the increasing of salt concentration from 0 to 20 dSm -1 . So the ESWYT-5, ESWYT-6 and BARI GOM 28 could be recommended as salt tolerant genotype against moderatesaline conditions.

    MANAGEMENT OF PURPLE BLOTCH COMPLEX OF ONION (Allium cepa) FOR SEED PRODUCTION

    The study was carried out in the central farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University and in the Seed Health Laboratory, Department of Plant Pathology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka with a view to evaluate the efficacy of different treatments against Alternaria porri and Stemphylium vesicarium causing purple blotch complex of onion for seed production. The onion variety, ‘Taherpuri’ was used in the experiment. The foliar spray experiment was laid out in a RCBD with three replications. Eight treatments, Viz. T 0 = Control (No spraying); T 1 = Foliar spraying with Alamanda leaf extract 1:2 (W/V); T 2 = Foliar spraying with Neem leaf extract 1:2 (W/V); T 3 = Foliar spraying with Score 250 EC @ 0.2%; T 4 = Foliar spraying with Rovral 50 WP @ 0.2%; T 5 = Foliar spraying with Dithane M-45 @ 0.45%; T 6 = Foliar spraying with Tricost 1 % WP- @ 0.3% (Trichoderma harzianum); T 7 = Foliar spraying with Micronutrients (ZnS0 4 + Borax) were explored in the experiments. A significant variations were observed in respect of disease incidence and severity of purple blotch complex, seed yield, yield contributing characters, seed germination and prevalence of seed borne pathogens of harvested seeds as influenced by the treatment of different selected spray. The highest seed yield 707.45 kg/ha was obtained in case of treatment T 4 where foliar spraying were applied with Rovral 50 WP @ 0.2%. The lowest percent leaf infection, percent disease index (PDI-leaf), percent infected seed stalk, percent Stalk Area Disease (%SAD) were recorded in foliar spray with Rovral 50 WP followed by Score 250 EC. The highest seed germination by 93.5 % and the lowest prevalence of Alternaria porri by 0.25 % & Stemphylium vesicarium by 0.75 % and also total pathogenic infection by 8.5 % were recorded on harvested onion seed from Rovral 50 WP treated experimental plot followed by Score 250 EC.
