Item : OCCURRENCE OF FASCIOLIOSIS IN CATTLE AT COMPANIGONJ UPAZILA IN NOAKHALI DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH(Chattogram Veterinary & Animal |Sciences University, 2009-06) Ghosh, SumonThe study was carried out to assess the clinical occurrence of fascioliosis in cattle at Companigonj Upazila in Noakhali District of Bangladesh from 20th December’08 to 15th February’09. Confirmatory diagnosis was made by coproscopical examination (Direct smear & Sedimentation). Coproscopical examination of 106 cattle were randomly selected and about 33.95% of infected cattle showed Fasciola gigantica infection, of which 13.20% male and 20.75% female were infected. The result of this observation indicates that there is a marked pattern of Fasciola gigantica infection in both sexes. From this result it’s proved that female are more susceptible than males. Relatively young animals were more susceptible than adult. It was recorded 47.23% at 1.3-2 years old, 33.34% at 3-4 years old, 11.12% at 4-5 years old and 8.34% at 5-6 years old cases were affected by fascioliosis. Local breeds were more infected (63.89%) than cross bred cattle (27.78%). Low land grazed animals were more susceptible (80.56%) than plane land grazed animals (19.45%).Item Rabies Control in Bangladesh and Prediction of Human Rabies Cases by 2030: A One Health Approach(Wolters Kluwer Health, 2024-08-27) Ghosh, Sumon; Hasan, Mohammad Nayeem; Nath, Nirmalendu Deb; Haider, Najmul; Jones, Daleniece Higgins; Islam, Md. NazmulBackground Bangladesh is making progress toward achieving zero dog-mediated rabies deaths by 2030, a global goal set in 2015. Methods Drawing from multiple datasets, including patient immunisation record books and mass dog vaccination (MDV) databases, we conducted a comprehensive analysis between 2011 and 2023 to understand the effectiveness of rabies control programmes and predict human rabies cases in Bangladesh by 2030 using time-series forecasting models. We also compared rabies virus sequences from GenBank in Bangladesh and other South Asian countries. Findings The estimated dog population in Bangladesh was determined to be 1,668,140, with an average dog population density of 12.83 dogs/km2 (95% CI 11.14–14.53) and a human-to-dog ratio of 86.70 (95% CI 76.60–96.80). The MDV campaign has led to the vaccination of an average of 21,295 dogs (95% CI 18,654–23,935) per district annually out of an estimated 26,065 dogs (95% CI 22,898–29,230). A declining trend in predicted and observed human rabies cases has been identified, suggesting that Bangladesh is poised to make substantial progress towards achieving the ‘Zero by 30’ goal, provided the current trajectory continues. The phylogenetic analysis shows that rabies viruses in Bangladesh belong to the Arctic-like-1 group, which differs from those in Bhutan despite sharing a common ancestor. Interpretation Bangladesh's One Health approach demonstrated that an increase in MDV and anti-rabies vaccine (ARV) resulted in a decline in the relative risk of human rabies cases, indicating that eliminating dog-mediated human rabies could be achievable. Funding The study was supported by the Communicable Disease Control (CDC) Division of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) of the People's Republic of Bangladesh.Item Status of house-hold duck rearing system along with productive performance in selected area of Bangladesh (Companigonj, Noakhali).(Chattogram Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Khulshi, Chattogram-4225, Bangladesh, 2009-04) Ghosh, SumonThis study was carried out to assess the status of household ducks in selected area (Companigonj upazilla under Noakhali district ) of Bangladesh. Beside this, socioeconomic condition of the farmers, feeding system and availability of feed for raising ducks, productive performance of scavenging duck and profitability of raising those ducks were evaluated. Information was collected by direct interview method using a questionnaire from 30 house holds (mostly women) who rear duck in this locality. The study revealed that duck rearing is mostly lead by 30 onwards aged women (67%). The level of education of woman beneficiaries varied from primary to higher secondary. However 23.34% farmers were illiterate. Fifty five percent farmers had a patch of cultivable land (Average 20 decimal). The average farm size was 7.2 and it always remain variable with the duck’s loss attributed to different causes. Around 17% of the farmers reared duck with hen. 68% of the farmers housed their ducks in bamboo made cage while the rest of the farmers kept ducks in house made of wood, tin, straw or mud. Eighty nine percent of the farmers used single or combination of materials (straw, polythene, chat, ash) as liter where the rest of the farmers kept ducks without using any litter. The mature ducks were highest (74.2%) in October –December and lowest (45.2%) in April-June. Duck reaches first laying at 6 months of age, produces average 110 eggs per year. Egg production reaches peak during winter specially after crop-harvesting season. Duck consumption by the household specially in winter is highest (52.3%) in Companigonj Upazilla than other area of Bangladesh . The highest number of duck eggs (32.2%) were consumed by the large farmers while the lowest number of eggs (12.4%) were consumed by the landless farmers. Around 78% of the respondents fed their birds with mixture of boil rice and rice polish as it is available and cheap. Ninety-two percent respondents said that they do not spend any money on supplementary feed. The mortality rate was 19% and it is highest in winter (27%). Duck were vaccinated against duck plague on day between 15 and 31 for the first and between 35 and 46 for the booster dose. Around 62% households sold eggs to the local market and 27% sold to the bepari. Total annual expenditure and annual income per duck were on an average 119.15Tk. and 220.69Tk. respectively where as family wise annual expenditure and income were 857.9Tk. and 1661.09 Tk. respectively.
