Item Association between socioeconomic status and prevalence of non-communicable diseases risk factors and comorbidities in Bangladesh: Findings from a nationwide cross-sectional survey(BMJ Open, 3/13/2019) Biswas, Tuhin; Townsend, Nick; Islam, Md Saimul; Islam, Md Rajibul; Gupta, Rajat Das; Das, Sumon Kumar; Mamun, Abdullah AlObjectives This study aimed to examine the prevalence and distribution in the comorbidity of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among the adult population in Bangladesh by measures of socioeconomic status (SES). Design This was a cross-sectional study. Setting This study used Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2011 data. Participants Total 8763 individuals aged ≥35 years were included. Primary and secondary outcome measures The primary outcome measures were diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN) and overweight/obesity. The study further assesses factors (in particular SES) associated with these comorbidities (DM, HTN and overweight/obesity). Results Of 8763 adults, 12% had DM, 27% HTN and 22% were overweight/obese (body mass index ≥23 kg/m2 ). Just over 1% of the sample had all three conditions, 3% had both DM and HTN, 3%DM and overweight/obesity and 7% HTN and overweight/obesity. DM, HTN and overweight/ obesity were more prevalent those who had higher education, were non-manual workers, were in the richer to richest SES and lived in urban settings. Individuals in higher SES groups were also more likely to suffer from comorbidities. In the multivariable analysis, it was found that individual belonging to the richest wealth quintile had the highest odds of having HTN (adjusted OR (AOR) 1.49, 95% CI 1.29 to 1.72), DM (AOR 1.63, 95%CI 1.25 to 2.14) and overweight/obesity (AOR 4.3, 95%CI 3.32 to 5.57). Conclusions In contrast to more affluent countries, individuals with NCDs risk factors and comorbidities are more common in higher SES individuals. Public health approaches must consider this social patterning in tackling NCDs in the country.Item Automated Traffic Detection System Based on Image Processing(Al-Kindi Center for Research and Development, 2020-06-30) Faisal, Fahad; Das, Sumon Kumar; Siddique, Abdul Hasib; Hasan, Mehedi; Sabrin, Samia; Hossain, Chowdhury Akram; Tong, ZhouThis paper proposes a low-cost automated traffic detection system based on image processing. Dhaka is one of the crowded cities in the world with highly challenging traffic system. There is substantial lack of awareness among the drivers of transport system. As a result, citizens do not follow the rules and regulation while driving in Dhaka city. The tendency of violating the traffic regulation is noticeable throughout the country. As a result, the whole traffic system collapses very often and sometimes it ends-up with severe accidents. In recent days, the government has taken different initiatives including enlargement of pedestrian walkways, building new flyovers and foot-over bridges, expansion of existing roads. But, violation still the outcome of all these initiatives could not improve the situation significantly. The proposed system will automatically detect the traffic through live streaming video so that the detected images can be used to detect traffic violation. Later on, the law enforcement agency will be able to take necessary legal steps based on the stored information on the database.Item Automated Traffic Detection with Image Processing using Raspberry Pi(Daffodil International University, 2018-12) Das, Sumon Kumar; Rahman, Md. SanjadurThis project is on “Automated Traffic Detection with Image Processing using Raspberry Pi”. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh is the most densely populated city in the world and Traffic the ugliest side of Dhaka's development. The country is full of uneducated and undisciplined drivers who have no respect for the traffic rules and regulations. The tendency of breaking the law and overtaking of the drivers makes controlling the traffic harder for the traffic police. Sometimes this kind of tendency cause more traffic and sometimes it takes our lives. In recent times, the government has taken a few actions such as the enlargement of footpaths, building flyovers and footbridges, expanding the roads but yet, there was no advancement in the traffic condition. Our project will automatically detect the traffic rules breaker of that vehicle through live streaming video. So, police can file a case or catch the rule breaker of that vehicle instantly. Besides, it will also count the number of vehicles passing through a specific area.Item Impact of Environmental Moisture on the Intensification of Tropical Cyclone in the Bay of Bengal using WRF-ARW Model(Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET), Khulna, Bangladesh, 2018-03) Das, Sumon Kumar; Alam, Prof. Dr. Md. MahbubComprehensive sensitivity analysis on physical parameterization schemes of Advanced Weather Research and Forecasting model (ARW-WRF v3.8.1) has been carried out for the impact of environmental moisture on the intensification of TC Hudhud and TC Mora, which formed in the Bay of Bengal and crossed the eastern coast of India on 12 October 2014 and Bangladesh on 30 May 2017 respectively. The initial and boundary conditions of tropical cyclone (TC) are drawn from the global operational analysis and forecast products of National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP-GFS) available for the public at 1°×1o resolution. The model was run by using WSM6-class graupel, Thomson graupel, WDM6-class graupel and NSSL momentum-1 microphysics (MP) schemes coupling with Kain-Fritsch (KF) cumulus parameterization (CP) scheme and four different initial conditions of each cyclone. The model domain consists of 8-24oN and 77-96oE and has 9km horizontal resolution with 19 vertical sigma levels. The model was run for 168, 144, 120 and 96-h using the initial conditions at 0000 UTC of 6, 7, 8 and 9 October 2014 for TC Hudhud and 0000 UTC of 25, 26, 27 and 28May 2017 for TC Mora. We have considered (17-20oN & 85-88oE) and (7-10oN & 92-95oE) positions of TC Hudhud and (20-22oN & 88-92oE) and (8-10oN & 86-90oE) positions of TC Mora as the front and rear positions of TCs respectively to analyze the impact of environmental moisture on the intensification of TC. Track of TCs, Maximum wind speed at 10m level, Minimum Sea level pressure (SLP), Convective available potential energy (CAPE), Convective inhibition (CIN), Relative Humidity (RH), Specific Humidity (SH), Water vapor mixing ratio (WVMR) at 2 meter level, Temperature anomaly, Wind speed (WS) and Wind direction (WD) at different levels have been simulated and analyzed in rear and front positions. The area average CIN, WVMR, RH, WS, SH, and temperature are found to increase in front and rear position continuously for all MPs before the landfall for all initial conditions. CAPE is found to increase at front position and decrease at rear position with respect to time for all initial conditions. Due to the northeasterly to easterly wind from surface to 200 hPa level during 8-10 October 2014 and southeasterly wind on 11 October at front position the TC Hudhud moved towards eastern coast of India and for southwesterly wind in the upper troposphere during 27-29 May 2017 and westerly wind at all levels on 30 May the TC Mora moved towards Bangladesh coast.Item Prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding and associated factors among mothers in rural Bangladesh: a cross-sectional study(© 2014 BioMed Central Ltd., 2014) Joshi, Prakash Chandra; Angdembe, Mirak Raj; Das, Sumon Kumar; Ahmed, Shahnawaz; Faruque, Abu Syed Golam; Ahmed, TahmeedBackground: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) means that the infant receives only breast milk for the first six months of life after birth. In Bangladesh, the prevalence of EBF remained largely unchanged for nearly two decades and was 43% in 2007. However, in 2011, a prevalence of 64% was reported, an increase by 21 percentage points. The reasons for this large change remain speculative at this point. Thus to investigate the issue further, this study was conducted. The objective was to assess the prevalence of EBF and associated factors among mothers having children aged 0-6 months in rural Bangladesh. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Mirzapur Upazilla (sub district) among 121 mothers of infants aged 0-6 months. Eligible mothers were identified and randomly selected using the demographic surveillance system's computerized database that is updated weekly. A semi-structured questionnaire was used for interviews that inquired information on socio-demographic characteristics, obstetric, health service, breastfeeding related factors (initiation of breastfeeding, prelacteal feeding and colostrum feeding) and economic factors. EBF prevalence was calculated using 24 hour recall method. In multivariate analysis, a logistic regression model was developed using stepwise modeling to analyze the factors associated with EBF. Results: The prevalence of EBF in the last 24 hours preceding the survey was 36%. Bivariate and multivariate analysis revealed no significant association between EBF and its possible predictors at 0.05 level of alpha. However, there was some evidence of an association between EBF and having a caesarean delivery (OR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.21, 1.06). In multivariate analysis, type of delivery: caesarean (AOR = 0.45, 95% CI: 0.19, 1.03) and wealth quintile: richer (AOR = 2.40, 95% CI: 0.94, 6.16) also showed some evidence of an association with EBF. Conclusion: The prevalence of EBF in Mirzapur (36%) is lower than the national figure (64%). Prelacteal feeding was not uncommon. These findings suggest that there is a need for breastfeeding support provided by health services.
