    Dehumanizing Terrorists

    The concept of terrorism receives two different treatments by the writers of two different socio-cultural ancestries. In John Updike's novel Terrorist (2006), the Muslim terrorist protagonist Ahmad's beliefs and actions are more incomprehensible and dehumanized than that of Jhumpa Lahiri's Udayan in Lowland (2013). Edward Said condemns the terrorist characters who are placed in isolation, out of time and context, to take a dehumanized decision ('The Essential Terrorist', 2006). It is expected that writers of terrorist literature will project terrorism through an analytical and causal view of the characters and situation. This paper will explore the differences between the two terrorist characters keeping in mind the after effect of the 9/11 apocalypse.

    DETERMINING THE OCCURRENCE AND DISTRIBUTION OF VIRUSES CAUSING DISEASES ON PUMPKIN FOR DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

    Abstract Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata) belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, is an important crop in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Due to high content of vitamin A, it is very nutritious and can play a vital role in meeting the vegetable shortage and nutritional problems. Diseases caused by viruses have a negative effect on the yield of pumpkin and other cucurbit crops. A survey was conducted to collect virus infected leaf samples of pumpkin to find the occurrence and distribution of viral diseases of pumpkin from three districts of Bangladesh. A field experiment was also conducted to determine specific symptom (s) associated with Cucumber mosaic virus CMV of pumpkin to aid visual diagnosis and serological detection and to find suitable management strategies for pumpkin infecting CMV diseases. The experiment was conducted during October'2017 to April'2018. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with three replications in the field. The seedlings with two cotyledons were inoculated with CMV and then transplanted in main field for management this virus. During survey, ten (10) characteristics symptoms were recorded as indicator of virus infection through visual observation. Among these symptoms, four symptoms showed positive to serological test by using CMV antiserum. By observing color of ELISA test, it was concluded that mosaic, yellow mosaic, chlorosis and hardy leaves symptoms showed positive to CMV. In field management experiment, CMV incidence and severity both showed the lowest in treatments T I (Inter crop coriander) which was 21.10% and 11.11%, respectively whereas disease incidence (%) and disease severity (%) both were maximum in T6 (Control) and which were 70.84(%) and 26.67(%) respectively. In case of growth and yield attributes, there were significant variations found in all attributes. Thus, in this study the effective management was intercropping by coriander. A negative relation between CMV disease severity (%) and yield (in kg) per treatment indicated that with the increase of disease severity (%), yield of pumpkin decreased. On the contrary, positive relation between CMV disease severity (%) with aphid population (no.) which indicated that with the increase of aphid population (no.), infection rate is increased. Inoculated CMV was identified in pumpkin leaves by visual observation and six (6) major categories of viruses symptoms were found in field viz. mosaic, yellow mosaic, fern leaf, chlorotic spot, leaf distortion and hardy leaves by visual observation. Among them, in serological test, barrier crop maize, yellow trap, chemical Malathion 57 EC and control treatments of pumpkin were infected with CMV which symptoms categories were mosaic, yellow mosaic, leaf hardening, curling and chlorosis shown positive during serological test by using CMV antiserum.     Integrating Language Learning through CLIL in Tertiary Level Literature Classes in Bangladesh

    In the tertiary level literature classes in Bangladesh, majority students with Bangla as 1st language considerably struggle to comprehend lessons in English which is either second language (SL) or lingua franca (LF) for them. In this case, adapting Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), which puts equal emphasis on subject teaching and language teaching for enhancing both the skill of communicating and transferring the content knowledge, appear to be more effective than just conducting lecture based content teaching. With existing skill of English, for the contemporary aspiring graduates of BA in English program in Bangladesh, it seems to be rather difficult to cope up with the original body of English literature, and in most cases, turns to be less successful in meeting the objectives and goals of the program. The agenda of this research is to ascertain whether adapting task-oriented use of literary materials integrating content and language teaching in tertiary-level English literature classes in Bangladesh is more effective in developing students’ comprehension level of literary contents as well as enhancing their English language skills simultaneously. The adopted research method is basically qualitative in nature based on qualitative data collected from a trial of CLIL lesson, class observation, questionnaire survey etc.

    Smart gas leakage detection and management system

    Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is widely used in Bangladeshi households, but its high flammability makes LPG leakage a critical safety concern. Very few detection systems exist, and the conventional ones are often expensive, grid-dependent and limited to alarms. This project presents a solar-powered smart gas leakage detection and management system for residential kitchens. The prototype integrates dual gas sensors (MQ-2, MQ-6), Arduino Uno controllers, GSM-based remote alert, Bluetooth-enabled subsystem communication, automatic ventilation through an exhaust fan and linear actuator and a solenoid valve to cut off gas supply. The batteries of the entire system are solar-charged and ensure continued operation with no human intervention. Testing under simulated leakage conditions confirmed accurate detection at a 2000 ppm threshold, rapid activation of safety measures, and stable performance for up to three hours on solar backup. Therefore, the system demonstrates a cost-effective, sustainable solution to improve household gas safety.

    Teachers' Perceptions on Corrective Feedback in Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) Contexts in Bangladesh

    The use of Task-based Language Teaching (TBLT) and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approaches in English as Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms has recently gained special attention. In the context of Bangladesh, English for Academic Purposes, a contextualized TBLT module prepared jointly by British Council and University Grant Commission Bangladesh, was piloted in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses in private universities in Bangladesh. This study explores TBLT and CLIL teachers' perceptions regarding feedback and how the success of TBLT and CLIL relates to providing feedback to the students of a large English class at the tertiary level. A mixed-method research design was adopted, including a questionnaire(n=50) and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) (n=10) as research instruments among the English teachers at different universities. The results indicated that the classroom teachers as research participants were positive about providing corrective feedback to learners’ tasks in TBLT and CLIL classes. The participating teachers suggest some feasible and plausible ways and strategies to provide effective feedback to the students of a large English class.
