This paper targets economic and sustainable methods of lumen testing of LED lights. Its resurgence being in a developing nation, like Bangladesh, it is necessary that such an expensive method, around the world, be brought down to reasonable circumstance. We initially acknowledge and elaborate the varying methods that are already present. Furthermore, we discuss the methods of our experiments and their results using varying techniques to strengthen our initial hypothesis, which focuses on lumen testing affordability.

Modification on the torque sensor based electrically assisted wheelchair with dedicated solar charger kit to enhance performance in association with the center for the rehabilitation of the paralysed
(BRAC University, 2019-04) Sarker, Pronob; Bari, Nafis Al; Zim, Ishtiak Ahmad; Rafi, Md. Abdullah Al Mohaymen; Azad, A.K.M. Abdul Malek
For millennia, physically challenged people have had to find different means to live their daily lives. In the early times, most of the used methods were very inconvenient and needed constant aid of other people. With time, however, these methods have been improving constantly and with the dawn of the revolutionary wheelchair, the hardship of physically challenged people was reduced a great deal. Although it is uncertain, the first known wheelchair is said to be made in 1595 in Spain, and since then with the advancement in technology, the wheelchair has come a long way and today’s sophisticated wheelchairs make life for physically challenged people very convenient. However, these sophisticated wheelchairs are also very expensive and unaffordable by the financially unprivileged people of the third world countries. Hence, an idea was proposed to produce an electrical wheelchair with integrated torque sensor technology which would ensure longer battery life and cut down overall costs and therefore, would be more affordable and convenient for the unprivileged people globally. The wheelchair was successfully produced, however had certain limitations and inconveniences. This thesis paper is about the modification works done on the existing torque sensor based electrically assisted wheelchair with dedicated solar charger kit to enhance performance.

Optimized distributed generation planning for radial distribution system using particle swarm optimization algorithm
(BRAC University, 2020) Faruque, Fairuj Binte; Nazim, Md. Shahriar; Chowdhury, Shuva; Sowmitra, Mycheal; Azad, A.K.M. Abdul Malek
Electrical generation and storage by a range of small grid-connected or distribution systemconnected devices known as distributed energy resources is distributed generation. This paper presents the determination of the optimal position of a Distributed Generation (DG) Unit. There has been analysis of the radial distributed network. The placement of distributed generation and the size of the distribution generation is a prime factor here. The key motive of this paper is to minimize line losses and improve voltage profile. We have followed a robust technique called particle swarm optimization to achieve this objective. The application is illustrated on a 30 bus system of 132KV line Chittagong, Bangladesh power Grid system using Newton Raphson power flow method. Results presents the maximum reduction of real power loss in percentage and optimal location of Distributed Generation.

People mover project (control system part)
(BRAC University, 12/7/2011) Bhuyan, Shayla Azad; Siddqui, Choudhury Tanzia; Chowdhury, Sazia Afrin; Zafarullah, Md. Kazi; Azad, A.K.M. Abdul Malek
People-Mover is an electrical self-motivated medium. The term is generally used only to describe systems serving relatively small areas such as airports, downtown districts or theme parks, but is sometimes applied to considerably more complex automated systems. Normally, the train runs autonomously form terminals to terminals. Its speed and movement can be controlled wirelessly. Practically, people movers typically consist of driverless trains with up to about four cars each capable of carrying 20 to 100 passengers who are mostly standing. They have been successfully used for surface transportation in airports for over thirty years. A new category of automated people mover called personal rapid transit (PRT) is being implemented at London's Heathrow InternationalAirport. In this project we designed and implemented this independent rail system which is planned for people transportation from system specifications down to fully working system as well as hardware and software. Main goal of this project is to convert the theoretical knowledge into practical system. On that aspect this project is perfect, because here all features of Electrical Engineering (control system, circuit designing and implementation, wireless communication, micro electronics etc.) as well as some mechanical engineering features are being used.

Performance and testing of the improved solar electric cooking system
(BRAC University, 2019-08) Akter, Ayesha; Haque, Md. Minhaz Masrur; Ahmed, Sheikh Faiyaz; Azad, A.K.M. Abdul Malek
Different types of solar cooking systems have been used from past few years. From parabolic system to panel cookers. Each and every cooking method came up with individual and unique concepts. Several attempts are made to introduce these solar cookers and have achieved variable success. There are still some critical issues need to be solved for wider dissemination of this technology. They include affordable cost, materials to be used, appropriate location for using solar cooker, size, design and cooking time. Following these points, an improved version of solar electric stove has been designed. As it is called an improved version, this stove is structured over verification of double burner stove named “Development of Double Burner Electric Stove Powered by PV Solar Panel.” In this improved version we have brought out some significant changes involving size, material, cost, cooking time and design. Here we have presented a comprehensive study over performance based and test analysis between both stoves comparing theoretically, experimentally, and development works. We have also evaluated with previously conducted solar cookers to show how the improved one is more efficient. As it is a green approach, we intend to grab attention towards the clean energy system and how they are comfortable to use. Since 90% of people use biomass, jute, cow-dung or wood for cooking. This causes harmful effects to health and only 6% of the people have the accessibility to natural gas, primarily in urban areas. Also supply of electricity is not stable and base demand cannot be met. In fact, new gas connection to household has been suspended and electricity can be used only by prepaid system. Thus most people use cylinder gas or electric stove for cooking. Following these issues, our goal is to give sufficient amount of energy which is cost efficient, available, environment friendly and healthy.

Performance comparison of CPLD and PLD based traffic light control system
(BRAC University, 2009-09) Asad, Ishtaque; Asaduzzaman, Md.; Sobhan, Tanvir; Morshed, Khandaker Mohd. Sabbir; Azad, A.K.M. Abdul Malek
PLD and CPLD has been extensively used for custom made circuits. That is why they are perfect for designing traffic light control systems. Our thesis represents the performance comparison of a traffic light control system designed on GAL (Generic Array Logic) using Programmable Logic Device (PLD) and on FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) using Complex Programmable Logic Device (CPLD). For our PLD implementation, we have considered GAL (16V8) chips, which can be reprogrammed and erased. For the CPLD implementation, we have considered FPGA (Altera's Flex 10k family's EPF10K10TC144-4) chip, which is a 144 pin SRAM. The CPLD design was developed using the CPLD programming software MAX PLUS2 v 9.23. The traffic light controller consists of traffic signals (Red, Yellow/Amber & Green). We have designed the traffic controller using both CPLD and PLD. Then we have taken the real time waveform as well as the simulated waveform for different frequencies. The Digital Storage Oscilloscope (DSO).was used to generate the real time wave from the traffic controllers. The results from the real time waveform clearly illustrates that CPLD has the better performance over the PLD technology. Further more we have designed complex circuits for automated detection of railway crossing and A Five road junction ontrolling Traffic light system.

Stability analysis of a non-minimum phase Electro-Hydraulic Servo System (EHSS) and identification of parametric uncertainty
(BRAC University, 2021-12) Ahmed, Mazid Ishtique; Azad, A.K.M. Abdul Malek
The electro-hydraulic servo system (EHSS) is a common tool in a variety of modern-day industrial applications that mostly deal with aviation and vehicle manufacturing and operation. In this thesis, an electro-hydraulic servo system is presented which bears the characteristics of non-minimum phase (NMP) phenomenon. A discrete-time transfer function for investigating the EHSS-NMP features has been estimated using a revamped mathematical model of the EHSS with respect to existing model parameters. An optimal control strategy is then formulated based on discrete linear quadratic regulator (DLQR) that seemingly, optimizes the control issues associated with EHSS affected by NMP behavior. A comparative analysis shows that the EHSS stability response improves with the DLQR, but the NMP behavior still persists. This thesis also tries to identify parametric uncertainties through a comprehensive mathematical model of EHSS. The modeling constraints are then investigated to propose a finite frequency robust control technique to actuate an active suspension load subjected to road disturbances. Using various performance criteria, simulation results are able to determine an optimum trade-off between robust control and rejecting road disturbances at higher deflection frequencies. As a result, these studies have demonstrated that the proposed control technique may overcome the parametric uncertainties of an EHSS-driven active suspension load.
