    ADOPTION OF IMPROVED RICE CULTIVATION PRACTICES BY THE FARMERS OF CHAR-LAND OF GOMOTI RIVER

    The main purpose of the research work was to determine the extent of adoption of selected rice cultivation practices by the farmers of char-land of Gomoti River and to explore the relationships between selected characteristics namely, age, level of education, family size, farm size, annual income, organizational participation, extension media contact, innovativeness, attitude towards modern agricultural technology and agricultural knowledge of the farmers and their composite adoption of selected rice cultivation practices (dependent variable). Data were collected from randomly selected one hundred farmers of Luter-char union under Daudkandi upazilla of Comilla district with the help of an interview schedule. Appropriate scales were developed in order to measure the variables. Pearson Product Moment Coefficient of Correlation test was used to ascertain the relationships between the concerned focus and causal variables of the research work. Majority (53 percent) of the farmers had high adoption while 29 percent had medium adoption and 18 percent had low adoption of improved rice production practices. Among the selected characteristics, age, farm size, annual income, extension media contact, innovativeness, attitude towards modern agricultural technology, problems and agricultural knowledge showed significant and positive relationships with their adoption of selected rice production practices. The policy makers may consider these characteristics to increase the adopter of improved rice production practices.

    Constraints Faced by Rural Women in Changing Livelihoods in Bangladesh: A Study on the Impact of Microcredit through PDBF

    The main purpose of the study is to determine the extent of the constraints faced by the women beneficiaries of Palli Daridro Bimochon Foundation (PDBF) on their socio-economic development and to explore the relationship between the socio-economic characteristics of the beneficiaries and their constraints. A total of 3436 women beneficiaries of three upazilas under 55 districts of PDBF constituted the population of the study. A face-to-face interview survey was conducted to collect data from the randomly selected 346 respondents. Among the 13 selected problem items, ‘high rate of interest’ was ranked first (70.81%), ‘more savings have to be deposited while taking the loan’ was ranked second (68.69%) and third (68.40%) was ‘various income generating activities and social development training are inadequate’ The findings revealed a significant relationship between training exposures, decision-making ability, savings deposit, income-generating activities, communication & network, and constraints faced by PDBF beneficiaries. Therefore, the PDBF authorities should consider significant factors in reducing the constraints faced by rural women to change their livelihoods.

    EFFECTIVENESS OF MASS MEDIA IN ADOPTION OF RICE PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES

    The main objectives of this study were to determine the extent of effectiveness of mass media and explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the farmers and their effectiveness of mass media in adoption of rice production technologies. The selected characteristics were age, education, family size, farm size, annual family income, wealth ownership, organizational participation, innovativeness, attitude towards modem technology and agricultural knowledge. Data wen: collected from 110 respondents from two villages through using a structured personal interview schedule. Karl's Pearson Correlation Co-efficient were used to test the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. The findings revealed that about one half of the respondents perceived mass media as medium effective while a little higher than one third of the respondents perceived mass media as highly effective and rest of the respondents considered it as low effective .In case of coefficient correlation farmers' education, wealth ownership, organizational participation, innovativeness and agricultural knowledge had highly significant relationship with the effectiveness of mass media however some other variables like age, farm size, family size, annual family income and attitude towards modern technology of the farmers had no significant relationship with their effectiveness of mass media in adoption of rice production technologies.

    MERITS AND DEMERITS OF ECOLOGICAL AGRICULTURE AND MODE OF ITS ADOPTION IN BANGLADESH*

    he main purpose of stusdy was to discuss about the merits and demerits of ecological agriculture and to determine its mode of adoption in Bangladesh. Attempt was made to search internet. available books. journals and printed materials from different sources of home and abroad during the period from June 2004 to October 2008 and it was revealed that there was on going debate in favour of and against ecological agriculture as it has many merits and demerits. For determining the mode of adoption of ecological agriculture in Bangladesh. data were collected from a sample of 144 ecological farmers drawn from a population of 478 ecological farmers of six Area Development Centers (ADCs) of Proshikha with the help of a pre-tested interview schedule during the period from February to August. 2006. Findings revealed that more th:1I1half (52.12 per rent) of the total lands of the respondent farmers were cultivated by the mixture of ecological and chemical practices compared to 47.66% of the total land of the farmers were cultivated by absolute use of ecological agricultural practices and only 0.22% of the total land of the fanners were cultivated by absolute chemical inputs.

    PROBLEM CONFRONTATION IN MUSHROOM CULTIVATION OF THE CULTIVATORS

    The purpose of the study was to determine the problems confrontation of the cultivators in mushroom cultivation and to explore the relationship between the selected characteristics of the cultivators and their problem confrontation in mushroom cultivation. Cultivators 16 problems in mushroom cultivation were considered for the study. The study was conducted in Savar upazila under Dhaka district. Data were collected from randomly selected 100 cultivators by using an interview schedule. Scale score was used to determine cultivators problem in mushroom cultivation while a Problem confrontation Index (PCI) was used to make comparison among the 16 selected problems. Pearson's product Moment Correlation was used for statistical test. Majority (65 %) of the cultivators were found confronted medium problem, while 24 percent of the cultivators confronted low problem and II percent confronted high problem in mushroom cultivation. Among the selected characteristics of the cultivators education, land possession, mushroom cultivation area, annul family income, organizational participation, cosmopoliteness, extension contact, training exposure in mushroom cultivation and mushroom cultivation knowledge showed significant negative relationship with their problem confrontation and other two variables namely family size and experiences in mushroom cultivation had no significant relationship with problem confrontation in mushroom cultivation. On the basis of Problem Confrontation Index (PCI) boundness of the cultivators to supply commodities to middle man in low price ranked first followed by high price of spawn, complexity to get credit for mushroom cultivation, low demand in the local market, high rate of interest for credit. Lack of knowledge on proper doges of pesticide for pest control of mushroom ranked last.
