    EV ALUATION OF TWELVE BARI TOMATO VARIETIES AGAINST DIFFERENT WILTS UNDER FIELD CONDITION

    Twelve tomato varieties namely BARI Tomato-I (Manik). BARI Tomato-2 (Ratan), BARI Tomato-3. BARI Tomato-a, BARI Tomato-S, BARI Tornato-6 (Choiti), BARI Tomato-7. BARI Tomato-8 (Shila), BARI Tomato-9 (Lalirna), BARI Tomato-l l , BARI Tomato-12 (Shidur) and BARI Tomato-I 4 were grown in the Horticultural farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Dhaka. October 2007 to March 2008 to determine the status of the varieties against different wilts of tomato. The tomato varieties were evaluated on the basis of wilt incidence and impact of disease on the growth and yield. At 55 days after transplanting (DAT), the variety BARI Tomato-9 (Lalirna) exhibited the highest Bacterial wilt incidence (44.47%) and the lowest Bacterial wilt incidence (15.53%) was recorded in the variety BARI Tomato-I (Manik). At 95 DAT, the highest Fusarium and Namic wilt incidence was recorded in the variety BARI Tornato-7 (40.00%) and the lowest Fusarium and Namic wilt incidence (17.77%) was recorded in the variety BARI Tomato-I (Manik) and BARI Tomato-2 (Ratan). The highest yield (41.11 t ha') was recorded in the variety BARI Tomato-8 (Shila) and the lowest yield (21.11 t ha') was recorded in the variety BARI Tomato-4 and BARI Tomato-I (Manik). Among the varieties BARI tomato-I (Manik) and BARI Tomato-2 (Ratan) showed resistant reaction and the varieties BARI Tomato-6 and BARI Tomato-8 showed moderately resistant reactions. Rest of the varieties showed moderately susceptible reactions against bacterial wilt. In case of Fusarium and Nemic wilts BARI Tomato-I (Manik) and BARI Tomato-2 (Ratan) showed resistant reactions, while BARI Tomato-3, 9. II showed moderately resistant reactions and rest of the varieties showed moderately susceptible reactions.

    INFLUENCE OF PLANTING MATERIALS AND PLANTING METHODS ON YIELD AND YIELD ATTRIBUTES OF INBRED AND HYBRID RICE

    A field experiment was carried out at Agronomy Field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, 2005 to study the influence of planting materials and methods on yield and yield attributes of aman rice varieties. The experiment consisted of three planting materials: Sprouted seed (M,), Nursery seedling (M,) and Clonal tiller (MJ); two varieties: Inbreed variety (BR II, Mukta) and Hybrid variety (Sonar Bangia-I); and two planting methods: Broadcast (T,) and Line (T,) sowing. The experiment was laid out in a split- split-plot design with four replications. Experimental results showed that planting materials had significant effect on the studied parameters like total and filled grains panicle", 1000-grain weight, grain yield and harvest index except effective tillers hill and straw yield. The highest grain yield (4.96 t ha") was obtained from clonal tillers and the lowest grain yield (4.24 t ha") from the sprouted seeds. Variety significantly influenced panicle length, 1000-grain weight and grain yield. The highest grain yield (4.70 t ha") was obtained from hybrid variety Sonar Bangia-I and the inbred variety BRII gave the lowest grain yield (4.43 t ha' I). Methods of planting influenced only on grain yield and harvest index. Line arrangement showed better performance with highest grain yield (4.81 t ha') than haphazard method (4.32 t ha' '). The combined effect of planting materials, varieties and planting method resulted in the highest grain yield from clonal tillers of hybrid variety with line sowing method.

    PERFORMANCE OF SEEDLING NUMBER HILL-1 AND UREA SUPERGRANULES ON THE YIELD OF TRANSPLANTED AMAN RICE VARIETIES

    A field experiment was conducted at the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University during July to December 2007 to find out the effect of four levels of seedling hiW' viz.; I, 2, 3 and 4 and two forms of nitrogen fertilizer-prilled urea (PU) and urea supergranules (USG) on yield and yield components of modern (BRRI dhan44) and traditional (Nizershail) transplant amall rice. The experiment was laid out in a split split-plot design with three replications. Urea was top dressed @ 58 kg N ha in three equal splits at 10, 30 and 50 DAT. The USG (1.8 g) was placed at 5-10 ern soil depth at 10 DAT in the center of four hills in alternate rows @ I granule in one spot to supply 58 kg N ha', Results showed that BRR! dhan44 produced higher grain yield (4.85 t ha'), two seedlings hil)' gave the highest grain yield (3.96 t ha") and USG gave higher grain yield (12.2%) over PU. Interaction results showed that significantly highest grain yield (5.28 t ha') was obtained from transplanting one seedling of BRR! dhan44, application of USG in BRRI dhan44 gave 5.08 t ha and transplanting one seedling hilr' with application of USG gave 4.18 t ha and finally placement of USG by transplanting one seedling hilr' of BRRI dhan44 gave 5.77 t ha'. The higher grain yield was attributed mainly to the number of effective tillers hilr', filled grains panicle" and 1000-grain weight.
