A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Survey of the Prevalence of and Association of Physical Activity With Suicidal, Psychosocial and Health-Risk Indicators Among Adolescents in Bangladesh
(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2024-12-10) Khan, M.; Ali, M.; Sayma, Ganesan, B.; Abdullahi, A.; Hasan, S.; Khan, A.; Hawlader, M.; Winser, S.
Purpose: This study investigated the associations between physical activity (PA) and suicidal behaviours, psychosocial outcomes and indicators of health risks. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of data from the Global School-Based Student Health Survey (GSHS) database. A total of 2058 adolescents aged 11–17 years in Grades 7–10 completed a self-administered questionnaire. Sex-stratified logistic regression was used to evaluate the associations between PA and suicidal behaviours, psychosocial outcomes and indicators of health risks. We used the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression to test whether PA-related factors predicted suicidal, psychological and lifestyle-related behaviours. A generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) examined the contributions of PA to these factors. Findings: Half of the adolescents (18.9% boys and 30.3% girls) indicated satisfactory PA per the World Health Organization guidelines. The most active group in terms of frequency of activity and walking or bicycling to school was positively associated with suicidal behaviour. Isolated adolescents reported anxiety despite frequent PA. Reduced frequency of PA was significantly associated with sexual activity, smoking, tobacco product use (girls), alcohol abuse (boys) and other drug use (boys and girls). The LASSO revealed that different PA-related factors predicted suicidal, psychological and lifestyle-related behaviour among girls and boys. The GLMM showed a significant contribution of PA to selected predictors. Conclusion: Increased PA may lower suicidal behaviour among adolescents. The most physically active groups were associated with predictors that varied by sex; boys were bullied, whereas girls experienced physical abuse.

Antifungal Activity of Plant Secondary Metabolites on Candida albicans: An Updated Review
(Bentham Science Publishers Ltd., 2022-08-05) Khan, Andleeb; Moni, Sivakumar Sivagurunathan; Ali, M.; Mohan, Syam; Jan, Huma; Rasool, Saiema; Kamal, Mohammad A.; Alshahrani, Saeed; Halawi, Maryam; Alhazmi, Hassan A.
Fungal infections have been increasing continuously worldwide, especially in immunocompromised individuals. Fungi, regarded as eukaryotic pathogens, have many similarities to the host cells, which inhibit anti-fungal drug development progress. Various fungal model systems have been studied, and it was concluded that Candida spp. is the most common disease-causing fungus. Candida species are well known to cause infections not only in our mouth, skin, and vagina, but they are also a frequent cause of life-threatening hospital bloodstream infections. The morphological and developmental pathways of Candida have been studied extensively, providing insight into the fungus development. Candida albicans is known to be the most pathogenic species responsible for a variety of infections in humans. Conventional anti-fungal drugs, mainly azoles drugs available in the market, have been used for years developing resistance in C. albicans. Hence, the production of new anti-fungal drugs, which require detailed molecular knowledge of fungal pathogenesis, needs to be encouraged. Therefore, this review targets the new approach of "Green Medicines" or the phytochemicals and their secondary metabolites as a source of novel anti-fungal agents to overcome the drug resistance of C. albicans, their mechanism of action, and their combined effects with the available anti-fungal drugs.

EFFECT OF POSTHARVEST TREATMENTS ON SHELF LIFE EXTENSION OF GUAVA
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2014-01) Islam, K. N.; Robbani, M.; Ali, M.; Bose, S. K.; Islam, M. M.
The experiment was conducted to develop an appropriate storage method and shelf life of two guava varieties, namely Swarupkathi and Kazi Piara under different postharvest treatments. Six postharvest treatments viz., control, hot water, neem extract, brown wrapping paper, perforated white polythene bag and non-perforated white polythene bag were assigned to the guava fruits. The two factors experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with three replications. Among the physico-chemical parameters such as reducing and non-reducing sugar contents increased significantly, whereas titratable acidity and vitamin C contents decreased during storage in all treated and untreated fruits. Between two varieties, the shelf life of Kazi Piara (9.89 days) was higher than that of Swarupkathi (7.94 days). The postharvest treatments showed highly significant variation in the shelf life of guava. The shelf life extended up to 13.00 days by using non-perforated white polythene bag. The fruits stored in nonperforated white polythene bag having longer shelf life resulted slow change in its chemical components. The shelf life of variety Kazi Piara could be extended up to 13.00 days by using non-perforated white polythene bag.

Experimental Investigation on Thermal Performance of a Closed Loop Pulsating Heat Pipe without Fin and with Fin Structure
(American Journal of Mechanical Engineering(Science and Education Publishing), 2016) Rahman, Md. Lutfor; Kader, Md. Faisal; Rahman, Md. Zakaria; Ali, M.
Pulsating Heat Pipe (PHP) is a new and emerging cooling technique in the field of thermal management especially in microelectronics. To fulfill the increasing demand of power electronic applications, PHP is a proven technology which works on principle of self-oscillation of the working fluid and phase change heat transfer phenomenon in a capillary tube. In this paper, the thermal performance of a closed loop pulsating heat pipe (CLPHP) without fin and with fin at the condenser section by using Acetone and Water as working fluid has been investigated experimentally. The effects of different parameters include the filling ratios (from 40% to 70% in steps of 10%), the inclination angles ( 0°, 30°, 45°, and 60°), and at various heat input (10 to 10W in the steps of 10W) has been investigated thoroughly. In this study CLPHP is made from long capillary copper tube with inner diameter of 2.0 mm and outer diameter of 3.0 mm. The heat pipe is bent into eighth number of U-turns and divided into three sections, evaporator section (50 mm), adiabatic section (120 mm) and condenser section (80 mm). Adiabatic section is maintained by using aluminum foil surrounded by appropriate insulation. The result shows that, the thermal resistance decreases as heat input increases. But at low heat input i.e. up to 60W, the thermal resistance decreases rapidly and the PHP performance is more sensitive to the inclination angle whereas high heat input i.e. above 60W, the thermal resistance decreases slowly and comparatively less independent to the inclination angle. Evaporator dry out is occurred for acetone at low filling ratio with 40% and 50% at heat input 40W and 50 W respectively. CLPHP with fin structure shows better performance than the CHPHP without fin structure at high heat input. Acetone with 70% filling ratio and water with 50% filling ratio shows the best performance at 0° inclination angle for both structures.
