Constraints Faced by Rural Women in Changing Livelihoods in Bangladesh: A Study on the Impact of Microcredit through PDBF
    (Asian Journal of Agricultural Extension Economics & Sociology, 2024-10) Islam, M. S.; Alam, M. M.; Ali, M. S.; Mazumder, M. S.; Rahmatullah, N. M.
The main purpose of the study is to determine the extent of the constraints faced by the women beneficiaries of Palli Daridro Bimochon Foundation (PDBF) on their socio-economic development and to explore the relationship between the socio-economic characteristics of the beneficiaries and their constraints. A total of 3436 women beneficiaries of three upazilas under 55 districts of PDBF constituted the population of the study. A face-to-face interview survey was conducted to collect data from the randomly selected 346 respondents. Among the 13 selected problem items, ‘high rate of interest’ was ranked first (70.81%), ‘more savings have to be deposited while taking the loan’ was ranked second (68.69%) and third (68.40%) was ‘various income generating activities and social development training are inadequate’ The findings revealed a significant relationship between training exposures, decision-making ability, savings deposit, income-generating activities, communication & network, and constraints faced by PDBF beneficiaries. Therefore, the PDBF authorities should consider significant factors in reducing the constraints faced by rural women to change their livelihoods.

EFFECTIVENESS OF INFORMATION SOURCES AS PERCEIVED BY THE SUB-ASSISTANT AGRICULTURE OFFICERS
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2008-01) Alam, M. M.; Islam, M. R.; Bhuiyan, M. H.
The specific objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of information sources as perceived by the Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers (SAAOs). Attempts were also made to determine eight selected characteristics of the SAAOs and their relationship with effectiveness of information sources. Ten in formation sources were considered in this study for measuring effectiveness. Data were collected from a sample of 100 SAAOs of the five Upazilas of Chapainawabgonj district. Pearson's correlation co-efficient was used to determine the relationships between the dependent and independent variables. It was revealed from the study that majority (90 percent) of the respondents' opined that these information sources were moderate to highly effective compared to only 10 percent of the respondents' opined these sources were less effective. In respect of relationship between dependent and independent variables it was revealed that except age and annual family income of the respondents all other characteristics such as service length, training received, organizational participation. job facilities. attitude towards rice production technologies and use of communication media were found to be significant.

EFFICACY OF FIVE FUNGICIDES, THREE PLANT EXTRACTS AND A BIOAGENT IN CONTROLLING DIE BACK OF CITRUS CAUSED BY COLLETOTRICHUM GLOEOSPORIOIDES
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2008-01) Alam, M. M.; Islam, M. R.; Amiruzzaman, F. M.
An investigation was undertaken to find out the effect of five fungicides, three plant extracts and a bioagent on the incidence and severity of dieback of citrus caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides. Five fungicides namely Dithane M45 (0.3%), Ridomil MZ-72 (0.2%), Bavistin 50 WP (0.1 %), Champion 77 WP (0.25%) and Bordeaux mixture (I %), three plant extracts viz. Bishkatali (Polygonum hydropiper) leaf extract, Garlic (Allium sativum) clove extract and Neem (Azadirachta indica) leaf extract and one bioagent (Trichoderma harzianum T,,) were tested as foliar spray for six times to control the disease. The highest reduction of dieback severity (PDI) was obtained with Dithane M45 (73.46%), which was followed by Neem extract (67.34%), Bordeaux mixture (59.19%) and Trichoderma harzianum T2l (57.67%).

GENETIC VARIABILITY AND PATH ANALYSIS IN ASH GOURD (BENINCASA HISPIDA)
    (Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2008-01) Latif, M. A.; Ahmed, M. A.; Alam, M. M.
Study on the variabilities, genetic parameters, character associations and path coefficients between yield and fourteen important characteristics of ten ash gourd genotypes were conducted to determine the critical traits that contribute to yield. The genotypes exhibited a wide range of variability for all the characters studied. Heritability (h\) estimates were high for all the characters except number of female flower per plant, edible fruit length and diameter. Highest Genetic Advance in Percentage of Mean (GAPM) were observed in node order of first male and female flower anthesis followed by plant height at first male and female flower anthesis and edible fruit yield per plant and number of plant per hectare. Edible fruit yield had high negative rp and rg' with plant height for first male and female flower anthesis, days to first male and female flower anthesis and edible fruit yield per plant. Yield had also high negative rg with node order of first male and female flower anthesis and positive rg with number of female flower per plant and edible fruit length. Edible fruit length and weight of individual fruit directly contributed to the yield of ash gourd. For increasing yield, selection should be based on plants bearing more fruits with higher length and weight.

Rural Women's Attitude and Involvement in Post--Harvest Processing of Vegetables
    (Journal of Animal and Plant Sciences, 2023-01) Kabir, M. H.; Afroz, S.; Alam, M. M.; Rahman, M. S.
Traditionally women are mostly engaged in household-based income generating activities. Post-harvest processing of vegetables has recently gained much attention due to its value addition utilities. Therefore, in this study, we tried to understand women farmers’ attitudes towards and involvement in, post-harvest processing of vegetables. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using a pre-tested questionnaire from 212 respondents in Dhaka district of Bangladesh. The data were interpreted with descriptive statistics, multivariate regression analysis and a logit model. About 71% of rural women had a favorable attitude towards post-harvest processing; 43% of them were involved in the post-harvest processing of vegetables. Women's attitude towards post-harvest processing of vegetables was influenced by age, education, household size, and their frequency to travel outside of their social system. Their involvement in post-harvest processing of vegetables was affected by education, group membership, media contact and time spent in home management. ‘Gender disparity in earnings’ was the most severe barrier to expanding women's involvement in vegetable processing, followed by ‘lack of land ownership status’, ‘spouse dominance’ and ‘social norms and tradition’. Motivating women in income-generating activities and introducing advanced yet low-cost and less-labour intensive technologies would enable them to participate in the post-harvest processing of vegetables.
