Item An Innovative Energy Neutral Home System for Rural Areas of Bangladesh(Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology, 20-Dec-2012) Das, C. K.; Alam, M. J.Nowadays, Power crisis is one of the greatest problems of Bangladesh. Most of the electricity produced in Bangladesh is based on non-renewable energy resources. The reserve of Natural resources or non-renewable energy sources such as: fossil fuels, oil, natural gas etc. are limited. So this is the time to search such a system where the residential areas of Bangladesh become Energy Neutral. This paper demonstrates such a system in which an Energy Neutral Home (ENH) is designed and implemented for rural areas of Bangladesh. The designed system is able to meet the energy requirement with renewable energy resources without taking any electricity from grid. In this research, biogas is used as primary renewable energy source for the generation of electricity.Item COMPARATIVE ECONOMIC STUDY ON DAIRY FARMING IN SOME SELECTED AREAS OF BANGLADESH(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2007-07) Alam, S. B.; Nasrin, M. A.; Alam, M. J.Dairy development through Field Fertility Clinic (FFC) is relatively a recent effort in Bangladesh. Farmers in the FFC areas are increasingly becoming interested in raising dairy cows. This paper is an attempt to examine the relative profitability of raising dairy cows by FFC members and non-members control farmers. The study revealed that annual average milk production per farm was 10075.32 litres and 8662.56 litres for FFC member and non-member control fanner respectively. In the case of FFC member farmer net return per farm was US S 852.44 while in the case of non-member control farmer. The member was US S 747.13. Return from per FFC member farm was higher by US $ 105.31 than the non-member control farm. The net change of dairy income from a farm was observed to be US S 407.22 and US $ 205.90 due to introduction of FFC veterinary services and recommended feeding practice respectively. It has been found that using the FFC veterinary services the net change of farm income was higher (US $ 407.22) than the FFC recommended feeding practice. CobbDouglas production function analysis was done to determine the effects of variables mainly for concentrate cost (X ,), rice straw cost (X,), green grass cost (X,), labour cost (X.), veterinary services cost (X,) and FFC intervention (D) on milk return. The finding suggested all of the selected variables had significant impact on milk return. It was further observed that all the resources except rice straw were used efficiently.Item EFFECT OF SUPPLEMENTING Moringa oleifera LEAVES AS FEED ADDITIVES ON BLACK BENGAL GOAT(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2014-07) Alam, M. J.; Beg, M. A. H.; Hossain, M. M.Moringa (Moringa oleifera Lam. moringaceae) is a highly valued plant that is mostly cultivated in the tropics and subtropics. It is used for food, medication and industrial purposes. The objective of the study was to assess the nutritional value of Moringa leaves and to determine the effect of supplementing Moringa oleifera leaves (MOL) on growth performance, carcass and non-carcass characteristics of Black bengal goats. The dried leaves had crude protein levels of 30.3%. Thedried leaves had the following mineral contents: calcium (3.65%), phoshorus (0.3%), magnesium (0.5%), potassium (1.5%), sodium (0.164%), sulphur (0.63%), zinc (13.03 mglkg), copper (8.25%), manganese (86.8 mglkg), iron (490 mglkg) and selenium (363 mg/kg). The fiber content was neutral detergent fibre (NDF) (11.4%), acid detergent fibre (ADF) (8.49%), acid detergent lignin (ADL) (1.8%) and (acid detergent cellulose (ADC) (4.01 %). The condensed tannins had a value of 3.2%, while total polyphenols were 2.02%. In the other hand, a total of 36 castrated goats aged 8 months, with a mean initial weight of 7.63±O.8 kg, were randomly divided into three diet groups with twelve goats in each. The duration of the trial was 90 days. All goats received a basal diet of grass ad libitum and mixed basal diet (200 g/day each). The MOL groups were fed additional lOOg (MOLl) and 200 g (MOLZ) of dried M. aleifera leaves, respectively. The third group (Control) did not receive any additional ration. The attained average daily weight gain for goats fed MOLl, MOL2 and Con were 103.3, 101.3 and 43.3 g, respectively (p<0.05). Higher (P<0.05) feed intakes observed were in MOL2 (491.5 g) and MOLl (490.75 g) compared with Con (404.5 g). The hot carcass weight was higher (p<0.05) for MOL2 (7.18 kg) and MOLl (7.14 kg) than for the Con group (5.46 kg). The dressing percentage in MOL2 (50.8%) and MOLl (50.0%) were higher (P<0.05) than that of the Con (44.9%). The growth performance and carcass characteristics of MOL2 and MOll goats were not different. Moreover the experimental result reveal that MOL has a cholesterol lowering effect and no lesion has been identified in the gastrointestinal mucosa of the parasitized animals fed on MOL mixed diet. Feeding MOL improved the growth performance and carcass characteristics of goats in an almost similar way, which indicates that M. oleifera could be used as a supplement or additives in goats.Item EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL INVESTIGATION ON FLEXURAL BEHAVIOR OF HIGH STRENGTH REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAM(Dept. of CE, CUET, 19-Dec-2018) Bhowmick, S.; Alam, M. J.; Mukhlis, M. R.; Bhuiyan, M. A. R.The use of high strength concrete has become popular in construction work because of its improved strength and durability. High-strength concrete can be used as a substituting material over conventional concrete for structural members. This study describes the flexural behaviour of high strength reinforced concrete beam. The variation of flexural ductility with concrete compressive strength is quite complicated and thus sincerely reviewed in this paper. An experimental and numerical investigation of high strength reinforced concrete beam has been conducted in the present study. Four simply supported beams, having compressive strength of 27.50 MPa, 43.85 MPa, 54.05 MPa and 62.01 MPa, reinforced in top and bottom edges of the beam have been investigated in this study. The beams were tested under two-point loading to reveal their flexural behaviour. Load-deflection diagram and ductility index are the primary parameters that were considered in this study. The ultimate loads that obtained from the experimental results were found to be in good agreement with the numerical results. In addition, this study also compared the theoretical and experimental deflection at the mid-point of the beam. The cracking behaviour of all the beams and the crack width is also reviewed in this paper.Item GENETIC DIVERGENCE IN WHITE JUTE(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-07) Alam, M. J.; Khatun, F.; Mahmud, F.; Bhuyan, M. S. H.; Hossain, M. M.Genetic divergence was estimated for identifying parental genotypes having distant relationship for hybridization program. Fifty one genotypes of white jute from different geographic origin were analyzed through principal component analysis. principal coordinate analysis. canonical variant analysis and cluster analysis by Mahalanobis 02 statistics with II morphological characters. All the genotypes were grouped into six different clusters. The cluster V and VI had the maximum ten genotypes while cluster I had the minimum of seven genotypes. The highest inter-genotypic distance (1.844) was found between G" and G~, and the lowest distance between G", and G,r, (0.233) The highest inter-cluster distance (14.367) was observed between cluster I and IV and the lowest distance (2.458) was found between cluster III and V. The highest intra-cluster distance was found in cluster 1(0.835) and lowest in cluster V(O.604)Item PERFORMANCE O}<'CAPSULARIS JUTE (Corchorus capsularis) VARIETIES IN RELATION TO SEED YIELD AND DISEASE INCIDENCE GROWN IN LATE SEASON(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2010-07) Hossain, M. M.; Khan, M. A. A.; Ali, S. M. M.; Alam, M. J.An investigation was conducted to find out the performance of deshi jute (Corchorus capsularis L) varieties in late season seed production method and incidence of diseases in late season seed crop. Five varieties of commonly cultivated in Bangladesh were used. They were CVL-I. CVE-3. BJC-2142, BJC7370 and BJC-45. Five fungal diseases viz. stem rot (Macrophomina phaseolinas, black band iBotryodiplodia theobromei, anthracnose (Cotletotrichum corchoris, die back (Gloeosporium sp.) and wilt iRhizoctnia so/ani) were identified in capsularis jute varieties in late season seed crop. Variation among varieties was observed in terms of disease incidence and seed production. The most prevalent disease was stem rot followed by anthracnose and wilt. Disease incidence was lower in varieties eVE-3 and eVL-1 and they gave higher seed yield compared to other varieties. The seed yield was 608.3 kg/ha in eVE-3 and 582.22 kg/ha in CVI.-I.Item PRODUCTION STRATEGY AND ITS EFFECT ON SPOTTED DEER AT NATIONAL ZOO IN BANGLADESH(Sher-e-Bangia Agricultural University Research System (SAURES), 2022-12) Islam, M. R.; Alam, M. J.; Talukder, A.K.M.B.I,The production and reproduction profile, feeds and feeding and herd management of spotted deer studied in captive condition at Bangladesh National Zoo in this experiment. For these purposes, fifteen (15) deer’s from each group i.e. adult male (Stag or buck), adult female (Doe), juvenile and infant were used during January 15 to December 15 th 2018 for a period of eleven months. Available feeds that were supplied to the spotted deer such as maize fodder, Jambu grass and Gourd Spinach (Kolmi grass), cabbages, cucumber, gourd, pumpkin, grain, wheat bran and soybean meal. Amount of CP and metabolic energy was 13.63% and 14.38 MJ ME per day respectively. From the study it was observed that average males and females’ birth weights were 2.97 and 2.73 kg, adult males and females weights 78.08 and 60.97 kg, males and females weaning weights were 19.05 and 18.49 kg respectively. It was also observed that average weaning age was 5.19 months, length of estrous was 17. 40 days, age at first fawning was 14.48 months and gestation lengths were 232.69 days respectively. It is concluded that recommended rations need to be fed with proper management systems to keep balanced nutritive conditions along with productive and reproductive well-being of the spotted deer at Bangladesh National Zoo.Item STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF FEEDS AT DIFFERENT LEVELS OF PROBIOTIC (PROTXIN) SUPPLEMENTATION ON PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE OF LAYING HEN(Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Research System, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh, 2007-07) Wadud, M. A.; Alam, M. J.; Beg, M. A. H.; Hossain, M. M.The study was conducted to determine the effects of dietary supplementation of a commercial probiotic (Protexin) on daily feed consumption, egg yield, egg weight, feed conversion, external and internal qualities of egg and livability in layer hens. To achieve the objectives a total of96, 42 weekold layers arranged in four dietary treatment groups including control, containing 8 birds! replication supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5% probiotic for a period of 16 weeks. The study reveals that the hen day egg production, feed conversion, egg weight and mass, egg shell weight, egg thickness and egg breaking strength increased linearly with the use of dietary protexin. However, livability and internal egg quality were not altered with the use of dietary protexin. Present study concluded that dietary supplementation of probiotic promote the laying performance and most of the external quality characteristics of eggs. In conclusion, it is recommended that dietary supplementation of probiotic at the rate of 1.5 gm per kg feed in the layer ration may be economically potential.
