Item A vision-based robotic arm for sewer maintenance(BRAC University, 2025-05) Moslem, Zaiyan Azad; Titun, Tagabun Taharim; Akter, Marufa; Rahman, Tasfiqur; Huda, A.S Nazmul; Shams, Sharif MohammadOur project introduces a cost-effective, vision-assisted robotic system for safer and more systematic sewer maintenance. For ages, manual sewer cleaning has exposed workers to toxic environments filled with various health hazards. Our robotic arm will be using a camera and a 3 Degree of Freedom (DOF) arm to detect and remove sludge, reducing human intervention. It offers real-time monitoring and a remote control system for increased safety and ease of operation. Our innovative solution fully supports sustainable sanitation practices and will be specifically suitable for urban infrastructure in developing regions.Item An Investigation of Transportation Availability for Socially Sustainable Dhaka, Bangladesh(Scopus, 2024) Razia, Sultana; Akter, Marufa; Rahman, Md. AzizurSustainable urban development stands as a pivotal imperative in contemporary discourse. One of the world's largest megacities, Dhaka, faces immense social sustainability challenges due to rapid urbanization for both present and future generations. As Dhaka's urbanization accelerates, transportation availability has become a pressing concern for socially sustainable urban areas. This study aims to investigate the current conditions of transportation availability and its impact on socially sustainable urban development, particularly in developing cities. This study used a quantitative research approach, and Dhaka is considered a representative city in a developing region. A multistage sampling method was used to collect 564 responses from residents of Dhaka through a structured questionnaire survey. The results indicated that four indicators of transport availability in Dhaka city exhibit low satisfaction levels among residents. Additionally, transportation availability statistically impacts Dhaka's socially sustainable urban development, as determined using four indicators cross-section OLS and Poisson regression analysis. The results guide governmental bodies, legislators, and urban planners in pursuing socially sustainable cities. Moreover, transportation availability indicators offer actionable policy insights for urban sector strategies in developing nations, bridging urbanization and sustainability to advance SDG-11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) in the 2030 Agenda.Item Assessment of Calorie Consumption among Citizen of Coastal Area of Khulna and Barisal(Daffodil International University, 2019-05-22) Akter, MarufaProper calorie intake is most important, without proper calorie intake a person cannot work properly. In coastal area of Bangladesh Both men and women per capita per day consume 2110.7 kcal whereas men consume 2.97% more kcal daily than women. Minerals play an important role in human body. Deficiency and over dose of minerals can cause danger and creates several diseases. For this study we selected a sample size of 100 people aged 35 and above. The study examined the mean Ca intake is 31.71±22.99 in men and 37.24±42.10 in women. Which is very less than recommended intake. The insufficient intake of P, Zn and Mg according to RDA in both adult men and women also examined here. Inadequate intakes of minerals can cause respectively osteoporosis, joint or bone pain, kidney stones, diarrhoea, diabetes, cancer, liver disease, gastrointestinal disorder, heart attack, headache and several diseases.Ca and Mg have a negative correlation with blood pressure and high Ca intake reduce the blood cholesterol. To meet recommended dietary intake among elder adults in Dhaka city and alongside in Dhaka city, it is important to provide a simple approach and make awareness among them.Item In search of justice: Untold tales of domestic violence survivors(BRAC Institute of Governance and Development, 2022-03-01) Sultan, Maheen; Akter, Marufa; Mahpara, Pragyna; Pabony, Nuha Anoor; Tasnin, Fariha; Hossain, Sara; Titir, Abdullah; Siddiki, Esrat Jahan; Antor, Sadiul IslamThis is the English translation of the book titled ন্যায়বিচারের সন্ধানেঃ পারিবারিক সহিংসতার শিকার নারীদের অব্যক্ত উপাখ্যান, published by BIGD and GIZ. Domestic violence is pervasive in Bangladesh. While there are remedies in place for domestic violence—protective and punitive measures—and institutional mechanisms for responses, access to justice remains a challenge. This report presents twelve case studies drawn from a wider study, exploring in depth each woman’s complex justice journey during the pandemic. It is intended to allow readers—academics, practitioners, and those supporting women and girls who are survivors of domestic violence—to reflect on their individual and institutional roles and responsibilities, and to strengthen strategies of response. The original study titled “Access to Justice During COVID-19 for Survivors of Domestic Violence” was carried out by the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), between November 2020 and April 2021, to understand the experiences of domestic violence survivors in seeking justice during the pandemic, their coping mechanisms, how they sought to deal with adversity and their complex justice journeys during COVID-19. The study aimed to examine the lived experiences of vulnerable married women with limited education and financial means, who had faced violence by their husbands and in-laws and sought assistance from legal service providers. It was commissioned by the Rule of Law Programme, GIZ Bangladesh, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), and carried out in collaboration with three non-governmental organizations (NGOs), namely BRAC, Bangladesh Legal Aid and Services Trust (BLAST), and Rangpur Dinajpur Rural Service (RDRS) Bangladesh.Item ন্যায়বিচারের সন্ধানেঃ পারিবারিক সহিংসতার শিকার নারীদের অব্যক্ত উপাখ্যান(BRAC Institute of Governance and Development, 2023-06) Sultan, Maheen; Akter, Marufa; Mahpara, Pragyna; Pabony, Nuha Annoor; Tasnin, Fariha; Hossain, Sara; Titir, Abdullah; Sidddiki, Esrat Jahan; Antor, Sadiul Islamপারিবারিক সহিংসতা সারা বাংলাদেশে ব্যাপকভাবে বিস্তৃত।
