Do socio-political factors affect investment performance?
(Cogent Economics & Finance, Taylor & Francis, 2022-08-21) Ahmed, Sarwar Uddin; Ahmed, Samiul Parvez; Abdullah, Mohammad; Karmaker, Uttam
Despite increasing research on the relationship between behavioral factors and investment performance, little is known about the perspective of emerging markets like Bangladesh. This paper investigates the mediating role of socio-political factors in explaining the relationship between behavioral factors and investment performance in the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). Using structural equation modeling (SEM) on 1,123 completed responses, we find that social and political environment mediates investors’ behavior in translating into investment performance. The finding suggests behavioral factors and the socio-cultural context of Bangladesh can explain market anomalies seen for decades in the largest stock exchange in the country and demands further research in this direction. Additionally, results show herding effect has the strongest effect on investment performance through combined mediation effect of social and political factors. The study results have significant implications for both theoretical and practical analysts by contributing to the evolution of post-neoclassical finance theories from an emerging market viewpoint and suggesting the probable causes behind historical market instability in DSE, respectively.

Inflation Targeting Through Short Term Interest Rate: Australian Experience
(Daffodil International University, 2008-12-01) Ahmed, Nisar; Ahmed, Samiul Parvez
The article is based on empirical data from Australian Economy. It made an attempt to evaluate the success of Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in controlling inflation by aggressively using cash rate. The main objective of the research is to find out the relationship of RBA’s monetary policy with Taylor Rule; whether it follows the Taylor Rule mechanically or uses a different form (e.g. forward looking) or depends on other factors as well. Other models have been used for estimation and the results are analyzed subsequently. The evidences from the test results suggest the successful implementation of interest rate rule by the Reserve Bank to stabilize the inflationary pressure in terms of forward looking perspective.

Transformation of Socio-Cultural Integration Policy and Inherent Political Theories in the UK: A Way Forward
(Sage Open, 2021-04-12) Ahmed, Samiul Parvez; Ahmed, Sarwar Uddin; Hasan, Ikramul
The contemporary integration policies (Community Cohesion Agenda [CCA]) of the United Kingdom have been criticized for their foundational weaknesses, conceptual inadequacies, myopic views with regard to the complexity of the issue, lack of evidence, and so on. Vast majority of the studies conducted to verify this discourse have been done in the line of theoretical arguments of diversity management rather than exploring their connections to a target community in reality. This study aims at establishing a linkage between the growing theoretical arguments of the integration discourse with empirical data in light of the policy framework of the CCA. We have selected the fastest growing Bangladeshi community of the CCA-adapted Aston City of Birmingham as the representative group of the ethnic minority communities of the United Kingdom. Qualitative data collection approach has been followed, where primary in-depth interviews were conducted on various policy actors, social workers, faith leaders, and Bangladeshi residents of Aston. The entire policy instrument, starting from its broad purposes to operational strategies, has been severely challenged by both residents of the community and relevant policy-implementing bodies in Aston. CCA policies appear to be largely inclined toward the interculturalism/communitarianism ideology rather than to multiculturalism. However, the empirical evidence shows that the need for multiculturalism, to be more specific—Bristol School of Multiculturalism, as a political theory remains in the integration discourse in the context of the United Kingdom. Findings are expected to have implications on practitioners and policy makers in designing diversity management policy instruments by having a wider synthesized view on both theoretical argument and empirical data.

Valuation of startup firms: a case study on Pathao
(IUB, 2018-05) Ullah, G. M. Wali; Mahtab, Farhan; Ahmed, Samiul Parvez; Ahmed, Sarwar Uddin
The article discusses the concept of startups, their sources of financing, and the stages of funding such as seed capital, Series A, and Series B financing. It further explains different startup valuation methods including the Cost-to-Duplicate Approach, Market Approach, Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) Approach, and Development Stage Approach. Using Pathao as a case example, the study demonstrates how startup valuation differs from traditional company valuation due to uncertainty, limited historical data, and future growth potential. Additionally, the paper analyzes how Pathao successfully raised investments from local and foreign investors, including funding from Go-Jek. The study also explores Pathao’s future expansion plans, digital payment initiatives, and challenges such as competition, regulatory pressure, customer expectations, and safety concerns. Overall, the case study provides valuable insights into startup financing, valuation techniques, and the growth potential of technology-based businesses in emerging economies like Bangladesh.
