    APPLICATION OF VARIOUS DOSES OF NITROGEN ON THE PERFORMANCE OF OKRA IN ROOFTOP GARDEN

    ABSTRACT The present study was carried out at the roof of second floor of Academic Building, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from June to September 2019 to investigate the performance of okra with different doses of nitrogen (N) in rooftop garden. Four levels of N viz. N = Control (No N), N 1 = 120 kg N ha -1 , N 2 = 150 kg N ha -1 and N 3 = 180 kg N ha . The experiment was laid out in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Data on different growth, yield contributing parameters and yield were recorded and analyzed statistically. The recorded data on different growth yield and yield contributing parameters were significantly influenced by different N doses. Regarding growth parameters, the highest plant height (123.20 cm), leaf length (30.17 cm) and stem base diameter (3.25) were recorded from the treatment N whereas control treatment gave the lowest values. Again, the highest leaf breadth (37.49 cm), number of leaves plant -1 (62.07), number of branches plant -1 (9.87), number of nodes plant -1 (24.20), number of internodes plant -1 (23.87), fruit petiole length (5.76 cm), fruit length (13.20 cm) and fruit diameter (2.11 cm), number of fruits plant (24.10), single fruit weight (16.59 g), yield plot -1 (3.80 kg) and yield ha -1 (13.89 t) were found in N 2 treatment. The lowest single fruit weight (15.14 g), number of fruits plant (16.30), yield plot -1 (2.53 kg) and yield ha -1 (9.21 t) were recorded in control treatment. Regarding quality parameters of soil moisture and light, the highest soil moisture (22.13%) and soil temperature (16.20°C) were found from the treatment N but the highest light intensity (32.54 klux) was found from N whereas the lowest soil moisture (20.55%), soil temperature (15.82°C) and light intensity (30.46 klux) were recorded from the control treatment. From the above result, it can be concluded that application of 150 kg N ha -1 2 may ensure higher yield of okra in rooftop garden. 3 -1 -1 0 -1 3

    COMMUNICATION EXPOSURE OF SUB-ASSISTANT AGRICULTURE OFFICERS (SAAOs) REGARDING RICE PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGIES

    The specific objective of the study was to determine the communication exposure of Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officers (SAAOs) regarding rice production technologies. Attempts were also made to determine nine selected characteristics of the SAAOs and their relationship with communication exposure. Twenty communication media were considered in this study fbr measuring the communication exposure of the SAAOs. Data were collected from a sample of 100 SAAOs of the five (Ipazilas of Chapainawabgonj District. Pearson's correlation co-efficient was used to determine the relationships between the dependent and independent variables. Twenty four percent of the SAAOs had high compared to 37 percent had medium and 39 percent had low communication exposure regarding rice production technologies. In respect of media-wise communication exposure AIiO. VAO. AAEO, group discussion, method and result demonstration caine out as first six effective communication media used by the SAAOs in receiving information. Respondents' service length. training received, organizational participation, job facility, opinion on elTectiveness of communication media, attitude towards rice production technology and extent of communication with regard to job responsibilities had positive and highly significant relationship with their communication exposure regarding rice production technologies. The other characteristics such as age and annual family income of the SAAOs were not related with their communication exposure.

    EFFECT OF GA AND NITROGEN ON GROWTH, YIELD AND PROTEIN CONTENT OF MUNGBEAN

    An experiment was conducted at research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka during the period from March to June, 2016 to find out the effect of GA and nitrogen (N) on growth, yield and protein content of mungbean. The experiment consisted of two factors: Factor A: Three levels of GA 3 viz.G 0 : control (no GA 3 ); G 1 : 50 ppm GA ii 3 ; G 2 : 100 ppm GA and Factor B: Four levels of nitrogen (N). viz.N 0 : Control (no urea), N 1 3 : 22 kg urea ha -1 : 44 kg urea ha -1 , N 3 : 66 kg urea ha -1 . There were 12 treatment combinations. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Data on different growth and yield contributing characters and yield were recorded to find out the optimum levels of GA 3 , N 2 and nitrogen (N) on mungbean production. Due to GA application maximum number of pods plant -1 (107.52), seeds pod -1 (9.97), chlorophyll content (52.75 %), seed yield (2.16 t/ha), stover yield (1.05 t/ha), nitrogen content (4.11 %) and protein content (25.72 %) were recorded from G 1 (50 ppm GA ) treatment while minimum from G (control) treatment. Due to nitrogen application maximum number of pods plant -1 0 (108.94), seeds pod -1 (10.14), 1000 seed weight (47.22 g), seed yield (2.16 t/ha), stover yield (1.08 t/ha), nitrogen content (4.16 %), protein content (26.00 %) were observed from N 2 (44 kg urea ha -1 ) treatment while the minimum were observed from N (control) treatment. In the case of interaction effect maximum number of pods plant 0 -1 (132.27), seeds pod -1 (11.30), 1000 seed weight (47.92 g), seed yield (2.38 t/ha), stover yield (1.28 t/ha), nitrogen content (4.20 %) and protein content (26.25 %) were recorded from G 1 N 2 (50 ppm GA with 44 kg urea ha -1 ) treatment combination while the minimum from G 0 N 0 3 (control) treatment combination. The overall results suggest that 50 ppm GA 3 along with 44 kg urea ha can be applied to obtain optimum mungbean yield, nitrogen and protein contents under the agro-climatic condition of SAU.

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF FOUR SESAME VARIETIES UNDER VARYING LEVELS OF POTASSIUM

    An experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University farm, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from March to July, 2019 to determine the effect of potassium and variety on growth and yield of sesame. The experiment consisted of two factors having 3 levels of potassium (30, 37.5 and 45 kg K 2 O ha -1 ) as factor-A and 4 varieties (BARI Til 3, BARI Til 4, Binatil 3, Binatil 4) as factor-B, which are laid out in Spilt Plot design with three replications. Relative water content, total dry matter weight, capsule length, seed per capsule, 1000-seed weight, seed yield and harvest index were varied significantly with increasing K level up to 37.5 kg K 2 ii O ha -1 (K 2 ). The seed yield and harvest index were 1.16 t ha -1 and 22.91%, respectively when applied 37.5 kg K 2 O ha -1 . But the highest stover yield (3.94 t ha -1 ) was recorded with 30 kg K 2 O ha -1 . On the other hand, relative water content, leaf dry weight, total dry matter weight, capsule number, capsule length, 1000-seed weight, seed weight per plant, seed yield and stover yield were increased significantly in V 2 (BARI Til 4). The maximum seed yield (1.09 t ha -1 ) and stover yield (4.02 t ha ) was observed at V 2 (BARI Til 4). The highest seed yield was recorded from the combination of K 2 V 2 (37.5 kg K 2 O ha -1 and BARI Til 4) and the combination of K 1 V 1 (30 kg K 2 O ha -1 and BARI Til 3) produced the highest stover yield

    SPINACH GROWTH IN RESPONSE TO NITROGEN FERTILIZATION

    The study was conducted at the Iärm of BSMRAU. Gazipur during the period or November to December. 2010 to enhance the production of spinach (Bela vulgans cv. 13AR1 spinach I) through the improvement of growth and yield of spinach by optimizing the appropriate levels of nitrogen fertilizer. The experiment was laid out in a Randomi,.ed Complete Block Design (RCI3I)) comprising six treatments with four replicates each. The treatment combinations were T(0 kg N ha"). T1 (50 kgN ha4). 12 (75kg N haj.T(1o0 kg N ha"). ts (125 kg N ha")and T5 (I 50kg N ha") respectively. Amounts of N. P. K and S applied from urea. TSP. MOP and gypsum were 68. 23. 17 and 4 kg ha-', respectively on being calculated by the methods of I3ARC (2008). Obtained data on plant height., leaf number. root-shoot growth and yield encompassing nutrient accumulation both in root and shoot revealed that nitrogen fertilization has a positive effect on the short term growth and yield of spinach. Further relationship found between N. P. K. S. Ca, Mg. Fe and Zn uptake and applied N doses lollowed by the study of highest 13CR (benefit cost ratio) indicated that nitrogen fertilizer applied at the rate of 75 kg N ha" has a better potential for the production of spinach.
