    ADOPTION AND PROFITABILITY OF MAIZE PRODUCTION IN GANGACHARA UPAZILA UNDER RANGPUR DISTRICT

    Maize is a newly introduced cereal crop in Bangladesh. Growers are still in hesitation in adoption of this crop because of its production technique, processing and consumption as food. The main purpose of this study was to determine on Adoption and Profitability of Maize Production in the study area. The study was conducted in Gangachara upazila under Rangpur district. Data were collected from 80 respondent farmers selected following disproportionate random sampling technique. A pre-tested interview schedule was used in collection of data during July to August, 2022. Collected data were compiled, coded, analyzed and interpreted as per objectives of the study. Results indicate that 70 percent farmers were young and middleaged farmers where 38.75 percent illiterate and 80 percent belonged to Nuclear family size, 82.5 percent having small farm size, 46.25 percent high farming experience and 66.25 percent low extension contact. Adoption of maize variety score ranged from 5.38 to 99.95 percent with an average of 76 percent. Majority of the respondents (61.25%) had high adoption. Overall BCR of maize was found as 1.36 where Palwan, Bahuboli 555, Dalia 5455, Kabri 50 are different maize varieties included. Level of education and farm size of the respondent showed negative significant relationship with adoption of maize production while annual family income and organizational participation of the respondent showed positive relationship with adoption of maize production. Storage facility at farmers’ level due to high moisture content, availability of credit, difficulty in consumption as food due to lack of processing facility and poor technical information were the major problems faced by the maize growers. The respondents being living in the Char land demonstrated lower socio-economic conditions but adopted maize production comparatively high level and functional training may be arranged by the concerned authority.

    AMELIORATION OF THE ADVERSE EFFECT OF DROUGHT ON RICE CULTIVATION THROUGH POULTRY LITTER BASED COMPOST

    A field experiment was carried out at the research field of Crop Physiology and Ecology Department, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur during January 2017 - May 2017 to evaluate the effects of poultry litter based composts on morphophysiological, yield and yield contributing characters of rice (BRRI dhan28) under different watering stress condition. The experiment was laid out in two factorial complete randomized designs (CRD) with three replications. Factor A included three (3) fertilization levels i.e. control (inorganic), compost (10ton/ha) + inorganic, compost (20ton/ha) + without inorganic fertilizers and factor B comprised of three watering levels (continuous flooding, 100% field capacity and 75% field capacity). Different parameters were measured such as plant height, tiller number, leaf number, leaf area, chlorophyll content, proline content and yield contributing characters during the experiment. Most of the morphophysiological traits, yield and yield contributing characters were significantly influenced by different fertilization and irrigation levels. Especially the highest plants height and leaf number per hill were recorded in compost (10ton/ha) + inorganic fertilizer with 100% field capacity. But the maximum tiller numbers were produced by the interaction of control (inorganic) with flooding irrigation. The total chlorophyll and proline content were observed more in flag leaf by the interaction between controls (inorganic) with flooding irrigation. But the relative water content was found more by the interaction of compost (10ton/ha) + inorganic fertilizer with 75% field capacity. The highest effective tiller number/hill was recorded from control (inorganic) and (20ton/ha+without inorganic) at anthesis and harvest stages. It was also observed that flooding irrigation produced the highest number of effective tiller/hill. But the combination of control (inorganic) with flooding irrigation produced the highest number of effective tiller/hill (19). The longest panicle length (23.12 cm) was recorded from the combined effect of compost (10ton/ha + inorganic) with 75% field capacity. The highest grain yield was recorded from control (inorganic) viii (3.69 ton/ha) and flooding irrigation (4.08 ton/ha). The interaction between compost (10ton/ha+ inorganic) and flooding irrigation gave the highest grain yield (4.42 ton/ha). In case of 1000-grain weight the combined effect of compost (20ton/ha+ without inorganic) with 75% field capacity produced the highest result (18.83 g). The maximum harvest index was recorded from compost (20ton/ha + without inorganic) with flooding irrigation. It will be concluded that the rice grown under 10ton/ha compost + inorganic fertilizer with flooding irrigation revealed as a pledged practice in order to get the optimum yield.

    Biological traits and predation efficiency of Menochilus sexmaculatus (F.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on different hosts

    Menochilus sexmaculatus (Fab.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is an important bio control agent against bean aphid, mustard aphid, wheat aphid. A detailed research work was carried out in the laboratory of the Department of Entomology, HSTU, Dinajpur to study the Consequence of hosts on the Biology and predation efficiency of Menochilus sexmaculatus (Fab.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on three aphid species such as bean aphid, mustard aphid and wheat aphid (Aphis craccivora, Lipaphis erysimi and Rhopalosiphum maidis). During November 2014 to April 2015.The average incubation period was varied from 3.80 to 3.95 days on three different aphid species. The duration of first instar was maximum on R. maidis (2.60 days), while duration of second instar was maximum recorded on L. erysimi i.e. 2.70 days. Minimum duration of first and second instar larvae was observed on Aphis craccivora (2.40 and 2.50 days) respectively. The maximum duration of third and fourth instar larvae was found on L. erysimi (3.20 and 2.60 days) respectively. Significantly lowest total larval duration was found on R. maidis (9.70 days) while the highest on L. erysimi (11.00 days). Maximum pupal period was recorded on R. meidis (3.20 days) and minimum on L. erysimi (3.00 days). The average egg laying capacity of single female was 286.00 to 365.00 eggs, when reared on different aphid species. Adult longevity of the beetle was found maximum on L. erysimi (42.60 days), and minimum on A. craccivora (34.60 days).The duration doubling times varied significantly among the aphid species. The mean generation time (T) among the varieties of aphids were 29.299, 28.704, 29.299 days, respectively. The longest duration was found in wheat and mustard aphids respectively and the shortest duration was in bean aphid .The gross reproductive rate (GRR) was highest (257.13) for the wheat aphid and lowest (202.88) for the bean aphid. The average predation efficiency of mustard aphid (1660.80), wheat aphid (1465.00) and bean aphid (1624.90) respectively.

    EFFECT OF NITROGEN AND SULPHUR ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF SUMMER ONION (Alliwn cepa L.)

    A field experiment was carried out to study the effect of Nitrogen and Sulphur on the growth and yield of summer onion at the Horticulture Farm of Sher-eBangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from February to July 2007. The experiment was conducted with two factors; Factor A: Nitrogen (thur levels ) i.e. N o (0 kg N/ha), N 3 (60 kg N/ha), N 2 (120 kg N/ha) and N 3 (180 kg N/ha) kg N/ha and Factor B : Sulphur (four levels) i.e. S 0 (0 kg S/ha), S(10 kg S/ha), 52(20 kg S/ha) and S 3 (30 kg S/ha).The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. In case of Nitrogen, N 2 produced the highest diameter of bulb (3.86 cm). dry matter content of bulb (8.7 1%) and yield (17.58 tlha) and the lowest from N 0 1n case of Sulphur, 53 produced the highest diameter of bulb (3.99 cm), dry matter content (9.03%) and yield (16.05 t/ha) and the lowest from S 0 . For combined eft'ëct N 2S3 produced the highest diameter of bulb (4.95 cm). dry matter content of bulb (8.71%) and yield (19.10 tlha) and the lowest from N 0S0 . Considering above findings, the application of 120 kg N/ha with 30 kg S/ha is best for growth and yield of summer onion cultivation.

    EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT PRESERVATIVES ON SHELF LIFE AND QUALITY OF GERBERA AND GLADIOLUS

    An examination was carried out in the Postharvest Laboratory of Department of Horticulture, SAU during the period of January to February, 2019 to study the effects of different preservatives on increase shelf life of gerbera and gladiolus. For this experiment, spikes of gerbera and gladiolus were kept in T II 0 (Tap water), T (0.4 ppm 1MCP + 4% sucrose), T 2 (50 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose), T (100 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose), T 4 3 (0.4 ppm 1-MCP + 50 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose), T (0.4 ppm 1-MCP + 100 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose), T ( 50 ppm AgNO3 + 50 ppm citric acid + 0.4 ppm 1-MCP + 50 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose), T 6 (100 ppm AgNO3 + 100 ppm citric acid + 0.4 ppm 1-MCP) + 100 ppm salicylic acid + 4% sucrose) and T (1L Warm water + ¼ tea spoon household bleach + 10 ml citric acid + ½ spoon sugar). The experiment was arranged in Completely Randomized Design. T 8 solution gave the best result in respect of water uptake, vase life and other parameters. The highest vase life of gerbera and gladiolus was 15.8 days and 14.8 days respectively in T 6 solution whereas it was 8.0 days and 7.0 days in control. Treatment with T solution gave shelf life 14.6 days and 13.6 days for gerbera and gladiolus respectively. Conventional solution T showed 12.8 days and 12.2 days for gerbera and gladiolus respectively. The highest solution uptake of gerbera and gladiolus was 62 ml and 113.4 ml respectively in T 6 8 solution whereas it was 20 ml and 50 ml in control. Treatment with T solution uptake 58.4 ml and 102.20 ml for gerbera and gladiolus respectively. Conventional solution T 7 8 uptake 47 ml and 96.40 ml for gerbera and gladiolus. As T solution (1L Warm water + ¼ tea spoon household bleach + 10 ml citric acid + ½ spoon sugar) gives better performance, so it can be a suitable substitute of chemical preservatives in Bangladesh aspect.

    EFFECTS OF VITAMIN-MINERAL PREMIX SUPPLEMENTATION ON LIVE WEIGHT AND HAEMATOBIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS IN BROILER

    To evaluate the effect of vitamin-mineral premix supplementation on physio-biochemicalparameters of 20 broiler birds of twenty days old were reared. The chicks were randomlydivided into four groups assigned as A, B, C and D. Group A was considered as control andother groups (B, C and D) were treated with vitamin-mineral premix at a dose rate of 1%, 2%and 4%, respectively from first day of experiment. Physio-biochemical parameters include-body growth, physical appearances, total serum protein, albumin, globulin, lymphocytepercentage, heterophils, TEC, Hb content, PCV, ESR, MCV, MCH and MCHC.The treatedgroups showed higher growth ratebut highest in group D (2007 ± 4.88) and the physicalappearances were better with relation the increase dose rate. Total serum protein, albuminand globulin values were gradually increased and highest in group D and the values were(15.20 ± 0.17, 8.98 ± 0.08 and 6.22 ± 0.10), respectively. The percentage of lymphocyte werealso increased at a dose dependent manner and highest in group D (68.80 ± 0.48) but theheterophils (%) were gradually decreased and lowest in group D (25.20 ± 0.28).The vitaminmineral premix supplementation might have beneficial effects for broiler farming

    EVALUATION OF WHEAT GENOTYPES IN RESPONSE TO SALINITY

    Two experiments (Germination test & seedling growth, and pot experiment for yield) were carried out at laboratory and shade house, Department of Agronomy, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University (HSTU), Dinajpur during Nobember 2013 to March 2014. For germination and seedling growth 22 wheat genotypes were tested in three salinity levels (0, 100 and 200 mM) for 10 days in sand culture in small plastic pot. Speed of germination as expressed by germination percentage (GP), rate of germination (GR), germination co-efficient (GC) and germination vigor index (GVI) of all wheat genotypes were delayed and germination percentage was reduced due to salinization compared to control. The lower reduction of GP, GR, GC and VI due to salinity was observed in BARI Gom 25, BARI Gom 27, Shatabdi, Sonora, and Akbar whereas higher reduction was recorded in BARI Gom 26, Duram, Triticale, Sufi and Kheri. Shoot and root lengths, fresh and dry weights were found to be affected due to salinization and shoot was more affected than root. Under saline conditions, longer shoot and root length was recorded in BARI Gom 25, BARI Gom 27, Akbar, and Shatabdi, i.e. less reduction of shoot and root lengths was observed, on the other hand, BARI Gom 26, Duram, Prodip and Triticale produced shorter shoot and root length. In this study, genotypes BARI Gom 25, BARI Gom 27, Shatabdi, Sonora and Aghrani showed better performance in terms shoot and root growth (fresh and dry weights) and proved to be tolerant genotypes to salinity. On the other hand, Duram, BARI Gom 26, Triticale, Kheri and Prodip were affected seriously in terms of fresh and dry weights by the saline environment. BARI Gom 25, BARI Gom 27, Shatabdi, Sonora and Aghrani showed more salt tolerance index (STI) based on shoot dry weight while BARI Gom 26, Triticale, Durum, Sufi, Prodip and Kalyanson demonstrated lower STI value under saline conditions. Results on germination and seedling growth indicate that BARI Gom 25 and BARI Gom 27 performed well but BARI Gom 26 and Durum were affected more than other genotypes under salinity stress. After screening from experiment-1, BARI Gom 25 appeared as the most salt tolerant and BARI Gom 26 as the most salt sensitive genotype. Therefore, the yield performance of these two genotypes BARI Gom 25 and BARI Gom 26 was evaluated in three saline conditions (0, 75 and 150 mM NaCl). With the increase in salinity level, days to first heading and maturity were reduced and BARI Gom 25 showed lesser reduction than BARI Gom 26 at 150 mM NaCl. BARI Gom 26 was affected more in its plant height, tiller production, spike length, spike plant’, spikelet spike”, grain dry weight spike", 100 grain weight, and finally grain yield plant under saline condition than BARI Gom 25. Considering the results of both experiments, it can be concluded that the BARI Gom 25 could be treated as the most salt tolerant and BARI Gom 26 as the most salt sensitive genotypes.

    INFLUENCE OF PLANT HORMONE, MICRONUTRIENTS, ANTITRANSPIRANT AND POLYTHENE SHED ON SUMMER TOMATO

The experiment consisted of two factors: Factor A: P : without polythene shed and P 1 0 : with polythene shed condition; Factor B: foliar application of F : tap water, F 1 : 4-CPA, F 2 : Zn, B, Mn, Se @ 100 ppm : Kaolin @ 2% solution and F : Zn, B, Mn and Se@ 100 ppm, 4-CPA and Kaolin @ 2% solution.     PRODUCTION PERFO CE OF MANGO IN DINAJPUR DISTRICT OF BANGLADESH (A CASE STUDY AT SADAR UPAZILLA)

    A study was conducted to identify the status of mango production, mango varieties produced, problems confronted by the growers and to explore their relationship with some selected characteristics. Data were collected from randomly selected 105 mango growers from eight selected villages of sadar upazila under Dinajpur district through personal interview during March to August, 2008. Data were collected on age education, farm size, land used in mango production annual income, experience and knowledge on mango production varieties and number of mango trees and so on. Relationship between the selected characteristics and dependent variables was done by Pearson's product moment co-efficient of correlation. In the study 30 germplasm of mango were identified. Baramashi droop was found as the only year round variety. Gopalbhog holds the first position (15.90 o/o) according to rank of recognized mango varieties based on their availability in respondents farm. About three fourths (77 .10 %) and more than the same (70.50 %) of the respondents had medium mango production and income respectively. Majority (75.20 %) of the growers confronted medium problems. Cent percent of the respondents certified that Dinajpur district is profitable in respect of mango production.
