    DRY MATTER PARTITIONING AND GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF MAIZE AS AFFECTED BY SPACING AND NITROGEN LEVEL

    The experiment was carried out to evaluate the dry matter partitioning and growth performance of maize as affected by spacing and nitrogen level at the Research Field and Laboratory of Crop Physiology and Ecology Department, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, Dinajpur, during the period of December, 2010 to July, 2011. Three plant spacing, viz., S1 (75cm x 25cm), S2 (75cm x 20cm) and $3 (50cm x 25cm) and three levels of nitrogen viz., NO (no nitrogen), N1 (90 kgha”') and N2 (180 kgha’') were used. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Result revealed that S1 (75cm x 25cm) required the maximum days to attain most of the phenological stages of maize. The duration of tasseling, cob intiation, silking, pollen shading and maturity required the highest days on S1 condition. Present study also revealed that differences in plant spacing significantly influenced TDM, LAI, LAD, CGR, RGR and NAR. Nitrogen levels also influenced the above growth parameters significantly. The results also revealed that higher plant spacing with N2 gave the highest values of all the growth parameters. SPAD value was significantly influenced due to variation in spacing. Leaf dry weight, stem dry weight and ear dry weight were significantly influenced by different spacing. Dense crops (S3) gave the highest value of the above parameters. Nitrogen levels also significantly influenced the above parameters. Leaf dry weight, stem dry weight and cob dry weight were increased with increasing nitrogen levels. Significantly higher plant height was recorded in plant grown in widest spacing (S1). The highest yield (5.80 tha') and harvest index (34.17%) was found in $3 condition and the lowest yield (4.59 tha’') and harvest index (30.46%) was obtained in S1 condition while cob length, cob diameter, number of cob plant’, number of grain rows cob”, number of grains row’, number of grains cob’ and 100-grain weight showed a reverse result with S1 condition. Nitrogen levels also significantly influenced yield and yield attributes. The highest yield (6.42 tha’) was obtained from the plant growing with N2 treatment while the lowest yield (4.44 tha’') was found from NO. The interaction between spacing and different nitrogen levels showed a significant variation among the growth, yield and yield attributes of maize. It is indicated that S3 with N2 showed the best performance in respect of growth, dry matter partitioning, and yield and harvest index of maize.

    MIXING ABILITY AND INTERGENOTYPIC COMPETITION FROM 7X7 UNIBLENDS AND BIBLENDS OF MUNGBEAN (Vigna radiata L,Wilckzek.) GENOTYPES

    Cultivar mixtures have been suggested as a means to achieve increased crop productivity. By choosing cultivars that complement each other for performance of important traits, mixtures could be formulated to meet specific production requirements. Mixing ability and inter-genotypic competition from 7x7 mechanical diallel mixtures excluding reciprocals of Mungbean (Vigna radiata (1.) Wilczek.) were studied, during March to Mid June 2008, under two experimental sets which provided for intra-row and inter row mixing of genotypes in biblend, designated respectively as Set I and set II, as well as uniblend stand in both Sets. The significant differences among the genotypes were found for all the traits examined. Seven mungbean uniblend line and the 21 biblends obtained by mixing seed of pairs of cultivars in equal proportions were evaluated. The mean performance analysis showed that, the genotype BD-6893 showed best performance for most of the vitally important characters such as pods per plant, seeds/plant, and yield/plant. In respect of biblend mixture, the biblend BD-6901+BD-6922 was found as best biblend mixture for different characters. Averaged biblends were 1.35% higher yielding than the mean yield of their uniblend components. For grain yield, performance in biblends was highly correlated with the average of the two component uniblends. The genotype BD-6906 had a good mixing ability for different yield and yield contributing characters as pods/plant, pod length, seeds/pod, yield/plant etc. in the both experimental sets. The mixture (biblend) BD-6901 + BD-6922, BD-6893+BD-6901 and BD-6921+BD-6922 were found to be a good specific mixer for different characters. Diallel analysis of mixing ability, analogous to genetic analysis of combining ability, demonstrated that uniblends differed in their ability to determine grain yield in biblends. The ability to predict biblend performance based on uniblend performance, together with the potential for above average grain yield, suggested that biblends can be formulated to achieve specific production requirements.     RESPONSE OF MUSTARD VARIETIES TO SALICYLIC ACID

    The experiment was conducted during the period from November 2014 to March 2015 in the experimental field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e- Bangla Nagar, Dhaka to evaluate effort of varieties and salicylic acid(SA) on morphophysiology and yield of mustard. The experiment was laid out in two factors Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Factor A: Mustard varieties (5 varieties)- V1: Tori 7, V2: BARI Sarisha 13, V3: BARI Sarisha 14 and V4: BARI Sarisha 15, V5: BARI Sarisha 16. Factors B: Levels of salicylic acid (3 levels)- S0: 0 mM SA (control), S1: 0.2 mM SA, S2: 0.4 mM SA; It replicated three times. The total treatment combinations were 15(5×3). Most of the results of this experiment showed differences to the treatments. The variety showed significant variation on morphophysiology, yield contributing characters and yield of mustard. The highest plant height, leaf number and number of branches per plant were found in V5(BARI Sarisha 16). The lowest transpirational water loss(%) was recorded in V5. Due to different mustard varieties, the highest number of siliqua per plant (185.23), the highest length of siliqua (6.89 cm), the highest seed yield (2.15 t/ha) and the highest stover yield (3.08 t/ha) was observed from V5, whereas the lowest number (85.00), the lowest length of siliqua (4.62 cm), the lowest seed yield (1.18 t/ha) and the lowest stover yield (2.24 t/ha) was found from V2.The salicylic acid also improved the morphophysiology and yield contributing characters. The salicylic acid showed significant reduction of days required to flowering and harvesting. The highest number of siliqua per plant (113.88), the highest length of siliqua (6.16 cm), the highest seed yield (1.74 t/ha) and the highest stover yield (2.85 t/ha) was found from S2, while the lowest number (107.78), the lowest length of siliqua (5.58 cm), the lowest seed yield (1.47 t/ha) and the lowest stover yield (2.64 t/ha) was observed from S0. For the interaction effect of mustard varieties and levels of salicylic acid, the highest number of siliqua per plant (192.23), highest length of siliqua (7.33 cm), the highest seed yield (2.30 t/ha) and the highest stover yield (3.37 t/ha) was observed from S2V5 and the lowest number of siliqua per plant (73.33), the lowest seed yield (1.01 t/ha) and the lowest stover yield (2.20 t/ha) and from S0V4 treatment combination. Therefore, this experiment result suggested that, exogenous salicylic acid improve the mustard seed yield by changing the morphophysiology and yield contributing characters different mustard varieties.

    TRAINING NEEDS OF FARMERS ON RICE PRODUCTION IN DHAMRAI UPAZILA UNDER DHAKA DISTRICT

    The study was conducted at Shailan village in Shombag union under Dhamrai Upazilaof Dhaka district. I he objectives were to: (I) describe the socio­ demographic characteristics of the fanners,(2) determine the training needs of the farmers on rice production emphasizing five selected aspects namely: seed technology, HYV of rice variety. fertilizer application. pest control measure and irrigation management. (3) explore the relationships between the selected characteristics of the respondents such as age, education, farm size, family size, family I) pc. annual gross income, fanning experience, extension contact. organizational participation and cosmopoliteness, knowledge on seed technology. knowledge on improved variety, knowledge on fertilizer application. knowledge on pest and diseases. knowledge on irrigation, training needs, interest in receiving training. In the study group nearly 62% farmers were middle aged (31-52 yrs.). Majority of the farmers (49%) had secondary level of education compared to other categories. About 43% respondents had medium site family (5-6) members. Most of the (64'}'0) rice growers owned medium farm ( 1.01-3.50 ha). Majority 'number respondents (54%) had less farming experience. lhc annual gross income or half or the respondents ranged between Ik90,010-220,000. Majority of the rice growers (49°·o) had IO\\ extension contact (4-6). A little over 36% rice growers had high organizational participation. In respect of cosrnopolitcness, 61 % had medium level exposure outside to their localities. In fact the rice growers expressed their training need for seed technology. l lYV of rice variety, fertilizer application, plant protection measures and irrigation management. Sixty seven percent (67%) of the study group were high I) in need of training on the above mentioned topics. Of the fifteen selected independent variables, age, education, farm experience. organizational participation and knowledge on fertilizer application had significant relationships with their training needs.
