    AGAR TREE CULTIVATION AND ITS ECONOMIC IMPORTANCE: A CASE STUDY OF MOULVIBAZAR DISTRICT

    Agar tree (Aquilaria malacensis) is the resinous, fragrant and highly valuable heartwood under Thymelaceae family.The study was conducted at Baralekha upazila in Moulvibazar district during the month of February-December, 2016 to determine the existing cultivation practices, plantation profitability and, problems of Agar tree. Forty agar cultivators were selected randomly for agar processors and agar tree chips/oil traders from three villages of Barlekha in Moulvibazar were randomly selected for the above purposes. Data were collected through direct interview of individual respondents. SPSS Computer package program 16.0 was used to analyze the data. The number of trees in homestead of the farmers ranged from 0 to 500 with an average 68. About 30% of the respondent farmers sold total Agar garden and 70% did not. The farmers who does not sell garden directly, among them 21.43% is involved in raw wooding, 64.29% is involved in processing atar and 14.29% is involved in both raw and processed. Two marketing channels are prevalent in the study area. About 64% of the farmers sell agar trees before artificial wounding, by agreement between the agar farmers and the agar-based enterprise owners. About 36% of the farmers sell agar trees after artificial wounding. Agar tree dust was mainly used as a by-product for the raw materials of agar production. The profitability of Agar production (raw) revealed that the discounted benefit cost ratio (6.55), and the internal rate of return (30%). So Agar tree production was found to be the most desirable and highly profitable.

    ASSESSMENT OF THE LIVELIHOOD CAPITALS AND PROBLEM CONFRONTATION OF THE FARMER’S IN TILAPIA WITH CARPS FARMING IN DINAJPUR DISTRICT

    The livelihood capitals and problem confrontation in Tilapia farming of Dinajpur district, Bangladesh were studied during July to October, 2017. Data was collected from randomly selected 100 tilapia fish farmers, 25 from each sub-district (Dinajpur Sadar, Birampur, Birganj and Biral) under Dinajpur district of Bangladesh through personal interview using a pre-tested well structured interview schedule. Livelihood capital was the focus variable. To measure the focus variable, five capitals (Human capital, Social capital, financial capital, Physical capital, Natural capital) were categorized in positive and negative statement about tilapia farming. The overall livelihood improvement score could be ranged from 30 to 150, where 30 indicating low livelihood improvement and 150 indicating high livelihood outcome. Total of 13 probable problems were selected to measure the extent of the problems and a four - point rating scale having category of “high”, “medium”, “low” and “not at all” was used. Therefore, the range of possible problem score of a respondent was 0-39. Results revealed that majority of the respondents (64 percent) had medium level of livelihood status compared to 34 percent of them having high leveled and 2 had low livelihood status. The findings indicated that majority of the respondents (41 percent) had high extent of problem confrontation compared to 46 percent of them had medium level problem confrontation and 13 had low problem confrontation. Among the problems, labor crisis on pick time and lack of security in fish farm was the most common problem in the study area. Out of eleven selected characteristics, six characteristics (i.e. age, farm size, total land area, annual income, aquaculture knowledge on tilapia with carps farming and training experience) showed significant positive relationships with their livelihood capitals in Tilapia with carps farming. Family size and problem confrontation level showed positive relationship with livelihood capitals. Education showed significant negative relationship with livelihood capitals.

    GROWTH AND YIELD OF CAULIFLOWER AS INFLUENCED BY DIFFERENT LEVEL OF GIBBERELLIC ACID AND POTASSIUM

    An experiment was carried out at the Horticultural farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207 during the period from October 2018 to February 2019 to find out the effect of gibberellic acid (GA 3 ) and potassium (K) on growth and yield of cauliflower (variety ‘Snowball’). The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. It consisted of two factors. Factor A: four levels of GA 3 (G 0 : 0 ppm GA 3 ii (control); G 1 : 95 ppm GA 3 : 115 ppm GA 3 and G 3 : 135 ppm GA 3 ) and factor B: three levels of potassium (K 0 : 0 kg K 2 O/ha (control); K 1 : 75 kg K 2 O/ha and K 2 : 100 kg K 2 O/ha). In case of gibberellic acid, the highest plant height (64.13 cm) at harvest, curd diameter (24.36 cm), marketable yield per hectare (34.39 t/ha) was recorded from G 1 and the lowest was recorded from G 0 . In case of potassium, the highest plant height (60.05 cm) at harvest, curd diameter (21.80 cm), marketable yield per hectare (31.42 t/ha) was recorded from K 2 and the lowest was recorded from K 0 . In case of combination of gibberellic acid and potassium, the highest plant height (66.73 cm) at harvest, curd diameter (25.73 cm), marketable yield per hectare (35.50 t/ha) was recorded from G 1 K 2 and the lowest was recorded from G 0 . The highest benefit cost ratio (1.89) was noted from the treatment combination of G 1 and the lowest (1.34) was obtained from G 0 K 0 . From economic point of view, it is apparent from the above results that the combination of G 1 K 2 was more profitable than rest of the combination.

    INFLUENCE OF SOWING DATE AND WEED CONTROL METHOD ON THE GROWTH AND YIELD OF SOYBEAN

    A field experiment was conducted at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during December, 2012 to June, 2013 with a view to find out the influence of sowing date and weed control method on the growth and yield of soybean cv. BARI Soybean-6. The experiment was consisted of four sowing dates viz. 18 December (S1), 2 January (S2), 17 January (S3), 1 February (S4); and four weed management treatments i.e. no weeding (control), hand weeding at 20 and 40 DAS (W1), hand hoe weeding at 20 and 40 DAS (W2) and chemical control by Whip Super 9 EC (Fenoxaprop-P-ethyl) @ 615 ml ha-1 at 20 DAS (W3) as post-emergence herbicide in the sub plot. The trial was set up in split plot design. The different sowing date and weed control methods showed significant effect on plant height, number of branches plant-1, dry weight plant-1, number of plants m-2, number of pods plant-1, pod length, number of seeds pod-1, 1000-seed weight, seed yield, stover yield, biological yield and harvest index of soybean. Among the infested weed species in the experimental field the dominant weeds were Lindernia procumbens (44.78 %), Echinochloa colonum (25.44 %) and Vicia sativa (20.59 %). Results revealed that early sowing (2 January) gave the highest seed yield (2.17 t ha-1). Two times hand weeding controlled the weeds most effectively which produced the highest seed yield (2.23 t ha-1) which was statistically similar with herbicide application @ 2.19 t ha-1. Interaction effect showed that highest seed yield (2.50 t ha-1) which was obtained from 2 January sowing when the crop was weeded by hand at 20 and 40 DAS.

    YIELD AND QUALITY OF DIFFERENT TURNIP VARIETIES INFLUENCED BY VERMICOMPOST

    An experiment was carried out at the Horticulture research field of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka during the period from November 2020 to March 2021 to find out the yield and quality of different turnip varieties influenced by vermicompost. The experiment was laid out in two factorial RCBD with 3 (three) replications. Factor A (Three different turnip varieties) viz. V 1 = Purple Top White Globe; V 2 = Pusa Chandrima; V 3 = Early Milan Red Top and Factor B (Four different levels of vermicompost) viz. F 1 = 0 t/ha; F 2 = 2 t/ha VC doses, F 3 = 4 t/ha VC doses and F 4 = 6 t/ha VC doses. Significant variation was found in all parameter due to the effect of different turnip variety and different amount of vermicompost application. In case of different variety, the maximum yield (17.84 t ha -1 ) was recorded from the Purple Top White Globe (V 1 ) as it is a high yielding variety. One the other hand, the lowest root yield (11.02 t ha -1 ) was recorded from Pusa Chandrima (V 2 ) which is a moderate early variety. In case of different levels of vermicompost, results exposed that the highest roots yield (17.22 t ha -1 ) was recorded from F 3 (4 t ha -1 VC) which was statistically different from all other treatments, where the lowest yield (10.75 t ha ) was achieved from F 1 (0 t ha -1 VC i.e. control). Finally, root yield as t ha -1 was the output of different varietal treatments applied as well as the effect of different level of vermicompost (VC) doses. The maximum roots yield (21.24 t ha -1 ) was found from V 1 F 3 (Purple Top White Globe with 4 t/ha VC doses) which was statistically different from others. Again, the minimum roots yield (7.80 t ha -1 ) was observed from V 2 (Pusa Chandrima with 0 t/ha VC doses i.e. Control) which was statistically similar with V 2 (Pusa Chandrima with 2 t/ha VC doses). The findings of the present investigation clearly indicates that the use of Purple Top White Globe turnip variety and optimum level of vermicompost for growing turnip root is a viable option for improved cultivation.
