Item A STUDY ON THE AVAILABILITY OF MEDICINAL PLANTS FOUND IN THE HOMESTEADS OF KALIAKOIR UPAZILA OF GAZIPUR DISTRICT(DEPARTMENT OF AGROFORESTRY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, 2018) AFRIN, SADIAMedicinal plants are known as the beneficial plants form the prehistoric times. Therefore, an investigation was done to know the density, factors of medicinal species plantation by the farmers in the homesteads in Kaliakoir upazila of Gazipur. Information was gathered through a set of questionnaire. 82 no. respondents were randomly selected in four villages of 2 unions. Eleven chose attributes of the homesteaders was taken as autonomous factors. The attributes were age, education, family size, homestead area, plantation area, annual income from medicinal plants, organizational participation, training exposure, environmental awareness, knowledge about medicinal plants and number of medicinal plants. The discoveries in regard of assessment with Bel (2.41%), Desi Neem (1.35%), Sajna (1.25%), Akon (0.73%) and Tulsi (0.72%) was found dominant medicinal species. Young aged (43.9%) people found in number, among the respondents. Most of them completed primary level (53.7%), medium size families (50%), medium (63.4%) homestead area, small (76.8%) plantation area, medium income (81.7%), low organizational participation (58.5%), most of them with low training exposure (50%), medium environmental awareness (39.1%), medium Knowledge (54.9%), medium medicinal plants (62.2%) was observed. There was significant connection between density of medicinal plant with age, education, annual income and Organizational participation, training exposure and number of medicinal plants. Therefore it was found that variables were highly interlinked with density of medicinal plants in homesteads. Further study should be carried out to investigate so that clear and deeper information may found.Item DETERMINATION AND RISK ANALYSIS OF HEAVY METALS IN DIFFERENT FRUITS COLLECTED FROM DIFFERENT SHOPS OF DHAKA CITY(DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL CHEMISTRY, 2020) AFRIN, SADIAThe study was conducted to determine heavy metals in different fruits collected from different shops of Dhaka city at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, during the season 2018-19. Five places viz. (1) Shwapno super shop of Mirpur-10, Dhaka, (2) Agora super market, Dhanmondi, Dhaka, (3) Prince Bazar, Mirpur-1, Dhaka, (4) Kawran Bazar fruit market, Kawran Bazar, Dhaka and (5) Meena Bazar, Shyamoli, Dhaka were selected for sample collection. Samples were collected on five fruits namely (i) Grape, (ii) Apple, (iii) Orange, (iv) Banana and (v) Pomegranate. So, twenty five unit samples were considered for the present study which was replicated thrice and remarked as T ii 1 to T 25 . The experiment was laid out in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. Atomic absorption spectroscopy analysis was used to determine lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) in sample fruits. It was found that the levels of heavy metals in fruits varied very little from location to location. The mean concentrations of Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni and Co in fruit samples were lower than acceptable limit recommended by FAO/WHO. According to FAO/WHO, the maximum allowable concentration for Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni and Co are 1.50, 0.20, 2.30, 0.80 and 50.00 mg kg 1 , respectively. Single factor pollution index (PI) indicates that all fruit samples collected from study area were not yet contaminated. Value of PI<1 indicates that the collected samples are not yet contaminated. In case of sum of pollution index (SPI), samples of Banana found at Kawran Bazar fruit market of Kawran Bazar, Dhaka showed the highest SPI (0.9001) whereas the lowest SPI (0.028) was in Orange found at Agora super market of Dhanmondi, Dhaka. Again, considering, Metal pollution index (MPI), the highest MPI (0.0119) was at Banana found in Meena Bazar of Shyamoli, Dhaka whereas the lowest MPI (0.0025) was in Pomegranate found at Shwapno super shop, Mirpur-10, Dhaka. Proper cultural practice may be an effective measure to reduce heavy metal contamination in fruits. Higher amount of heavy metal intake through fruit consumption can be reduced by regular monitoring of fruit contamination with heavy metals with different methods of heavy metal detections. Presence of heavy metal in fruits regarding Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni and Co is not harmful if it is lower than acceptable limit recommended by FAO/WHO. According to FAO/WHO it is concluded that there is no health risk for general people in fruit consumption.Item EFFECT OF SPACING AND DEPTH OF PLANTING ON THE GROWTH FLOWERING AND YIELD OF GLADIOLUS(DEPT. OF HORTICULTURE, 2007) AFRIN, SADIAA field experiment was conducted in the Horticulture Farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka, Bangladesh during the period from November 2006 to June 2007 to study the effect of spacing and depth of planting on the growth, flowering and yield of Gladiolus. The experiment considered of two factors. Factor A: spacing (3 levels) i.e. S1 (25 cm x 10 cm), S2 (25 cm x 15 cm), S3 (25 cm x 20 cm) and Factor B: depth of planting (3 levels) i.e. 01 (5 cm), 02 (7 cm), D3 (9 cm). There were altogether 9 treatment combinations. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The results of the experiment showed that the plant spacing had significant effect on plant height (30 OAP, 75 DAP), number of leaves, length of spike, weight of spike, length of rachis, number of spikelets per spike, diameter of individual corm, weight of individual corm, number of cormel per plant, weight of cormcl per plant, yield of spike, yield of corm, yield of cormcl except plant height (45 DAP, 60 OAP) and length of leaves. The maximum (11.40 t/ha) yield of spike was found from the closest spacing and minimum (5.83 t/ha) was recorded from widest spacing. The maximum (7.99 t/ha) yield of corm was found from the closest spacing and minimum (4.17 t/ha) was recorded from widest spacing. The maximum (6.54 t/ha) yield of cormel was found from the closest spacing and minimum (3.52 t/ha) was recorded from widest spacing. Statistically significant variation was recorded in terms of different levels of depth of planting showed on plant height (75 OAP), length of leaves (30 OAP, 45 OAP), length of spike, weight of spike, length of rachis, weight of individual corm, number of cormcl per plant, weight of cormel per plant, yield of spike and yield of cormel. The maximum (8. 71 t/ha) yield of spike was found from the deepest depth and minimum (7.96 t/ha) from intermediate depth The maximum (5.91 t/ha) yield of corm was found from the deepest depth and minimum (5.75 t/ha) from intermediate depth The maximum (5.75 t/ha) yield of cormel was found from the shallowest depth and minimum (3.94 t/ha) was found from deepest depth. There were combined effect between spacing and depth of planting recorded significant for plant height (75 OAP), length of spikes, length of rachis, weight of a single spike, weight of cormels per plant, weight of corm per plant, yield of corm per hectare and yield of corm els per hectare. The maximum ( 18179I5 Tk/ha) gross return, maximum ( l 036029 Tk/ha) net return and maximum (2.33) benefit cost ratio all were found from the treatment combination of closest spacing and shallowest depth.Item IN VITRO PLANTLET REGENERATION OF RUCOLA (Eruca sativa)(Department of Biotechnology, 2017) AFRIN, SADIAThe present experiment was carried out in the Laboratory of Biotechnology, Department of Biotechnology, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University,Dhaka-1207 during the period of February, 2016 to June, 2017 to study the effect of BA (1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 mg/l),IBA (1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 mg/l) and NAA (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 mg/l) either alone or in combination for direct and indirect in vitro regeneration of Rucola. The cotyledonary nodes of Rucola were used as explants which were sterilized with 70% ethanol and 0.2% HgCl .The highest frequency of shoot (80.00%) was observed in MS medium augmented with BA 3.0 mg/l in minimum (6.40 days). Maximum number of shoots(2.60, 3.60 and 4.60)were obtainedat 14, 21 and 28 days after shoot induction (DAI), respectively in BA 4.0 mg/L where the control treatment gave the lowest result.In combined effect, BA 4.0 mg/l+ IBA 3.0 mg/lshowed the highest percentage of shoot (76.00%) in 6 days and the maximum number of shoot (2.40, 3.0 and 3.40) at 14, 21 and 28 DAI, respectively. Besides, the highest number of leaves (3.20, 7.20 and 11.00) andlength of leaves (2.60, 4.42 and 5.00 cm) were observed in BA 4.0 mg/l+ IBA 4.0 mg/l and BA 4.0 mg/l+ IBA 2.0 mg/l at 14, 21 and 28 DAI, respectively. For root regeneration, the best result was recorded with BA 4.0 mg/l +IBA 2.0 mg/l in case of percentage of root(68.00%) and maximum number of roots(3.60) in BA 4.0 mg/l+ IBA 4.0 mg/lwhere the lowest result observed in control. On the other hand, BA 4.0 mg/l+ NAA 1.0 mg/l gave the optimum results in case of frequency of callus (68.00%) and weight of callus (1.71 g, 2.15 g and 2.80 g) at 20 , 30 and 40 DAI, respectively. Further, minimum days for shoot induction (10.80 days) and the highest number of shoots (3.00) were obtained from callus with BA4.0 mg/l+ NAA 1.0 mg/l. Then, IBA 3.0 mg/l produced the highest percentage of root(72.00%) in 14.40 days.The maximum number of root(2.60, 3.60 and 4.60) and the highest length of root (1.26 cm, 2.32 cm and 3.16 cm) at 14, 21 and 28 DAI, respectively was recorded with IBA 4.0 mg/l.Finally, the survival rate of in vitro regenerated plantlets was recorded 75 % innatural condition. Overall, feasible protocol has been developed for in vitro rapid regeneration of Rucola having potential application in breeding programfor qualities improvement in commercial use.Item INFLUENCE OF FERTILIZER LEVELS ON GROWTH AND YIELD OF QUINOA (Chenopodium quinoa)(DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, 2018-06) AFRIN, SADIAAn experiment was conducted at the Agronomy research field, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka from November, 2017 to January, 2018 to study the performance of two different varieties of quinoa as influenced by different fertilizer levels. The treatments were included two factors in this study as, Factor A: Variety (2) viz. Titicaca (V 1 ) and Vikinga (V 2 ) and Factor B: fertilizer levels (7); F 1 (No fertilizer), F 2 (120kg N ha -1 ), F 3 (50 kg P ha -1 ), F 4 (50kg K ha (120-50 kg NP ha -1 ), F 6 (120-50 kg NK ha -1 ), F 7 (120-50-50 kg NPK ha ). The experiment was laid out in RCBD (factorial) design with three replications. Data on different growth parameters, yield attributes and yield were significantly varied for different parameters. The experimental results indicate that seed yield of quinoa was significantly influenced by the application of different fertilizer levels. The higher plant height at harvest (23.34cm), higher inflorescence length (14.77cm), higher straw weight plant -1 (2.54g), higher 1000 seed weight (2.55g), higher seed weight (383.66 kg ha -1 ), higher straw weight (582.65kg ha ) was found by V 2 . The highest seed yield (682.07 kg ha which was statistically similar with V 2 F 6 -1 -1 -1 ) was obtained from V 2 .The lowest seed yield (73.15 kg ha ) was obtained from V 1 F 3 which was statistically similar to V 1 . Therefore, present study suggest that Vikinga with 120-50-50 NPK Kg ha or 120-50 kg NK ha -1 is the most compatible in respect of yield advantage and economic gain. The same interaction also showed higher yield for Titicaca also though it was lower compared to that at Vikinga variety. F 5 -1 ), F 5 and V 1 -1 F 7 -1 F 1Item INTERCROPPING OF MUSTARD AND ITS EFFECT ON APHID AND HONEYBEE(DEPARTMENT OF ENTOMOLOGY, SHER-E-BANGLA AGRICULTURAL UNIVERSITY, DHAKA., 2013-12) AFRIN, SADIAA study was conducted in the experimental farm of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University during the period from November 2012 to March 2013 to find out the effect of intercropping on the incidence of aphid and its subsequent impact on growth and yield of mustard and its pollinator honeybee population. The intercroppings were mustard (Brassica napus, Var. Bari Sarisha-7) with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), onion (Allium cepa L.), garlic (Allium sativum L), coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.), radhuni (Trachyspermum roxburghianum) and gram (Cicer arietinum L.). Sole cropping of mustard was also grown to compare the effectiveness of intercropping system. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications.The overall result indicates that the intercropping of mustard with onion, garlic, coriander and rahuni decreased the incidence of aphid population on mustard and increased the abundance of visiting honeybee compared to sole cropping of (mustard). When aphid number (3.81) was increased in mustard + gram (T6) intercropping system, at that time pod formation/plants (24.78) and seed weight/plot (7.63) were decreased. On the other hand, when aphid number (2.99) was decreased, at that time, pod formation and seed weight/plot (9.87) were increased. It was also observed that, when honeybee population (72.65) was increased then pod formation, seed weight/plot was also increased. On the other hand, when honeybee population (47.12) was decreased then pod number/plants, and seed weight/plot were also decreased.Item REDUCTION OF FOOD INSECURITY THROUGH HOMESTEAD VEGETABLE PRODUCTION IN MYMENSINGH DISTRICT(DEPT. OF AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION & INFORMATION SYSTEM, 2015) AFRIN, SADIAThe Government of Bangladesh has ident ified food securit y as an important factor contributing to its socio-economic stabilization and development. Bangladesh has made a steady progress in the expansion of food production. But because of the increasing population pressure there has been an extensive use of land to meet the growing demand for food. The purpose of the study was to determine the extent of reduction of food insecurit y through homestead vegetable production. The study was conducted with randomly selected 100 rural household farm farmers in the Bhaluka, Trishal and Gaforegaon unions of Mymensingh district. Data were collected through personal interview by using an interview schedule during the period of 2 nd March to 11 th April, 2015. Pearson’s product moment correlation co-efficient (r) was computed to examine relationship between the variables. Five vegetable crops i.e. brinjal, cabbage, amaranth, bottle gourd, bean were introduced in to the existing cropping pattern. Farm size, annual family income, cosmopoliteness, extension contact, agricultural training, knowledge on homestead agriculture, attitude towards homestead agriculture showed significant posit ive relationship with their reduction of homestead vegetable production. Other two variables namely, age and educat ion of the farmers had no significant relationship with their reduction of homestead vegetable production. Reduction of food insecurit y through homestead vegetable production was the dependent variable and nine selected characteristics of the respondents constituted the independent variables of this study. Findings revealed that highest proportion (73 percent) of the farmers had moderately food insecure after homestead vegetable production compared to 20 and 7 percent having low and high food insecure condit ion respectively. On the basis of descending order of the Problem Confrontation Index (PCI) inadequate agricultural land, Lack of capital or fund and Lack of qualit y seed were major problems faced by the farmers in homestead vegetable production.
